DEVILMENT wurde ursprünglich 2011 vom Briten Daniel Finch gegründet, aber erst als er mit Dani Filth von CRADLE OF FILTH in Kontakt trat, ging es mit der Band richtig vorwärts. Sie scharten einige Britische Musiker um sich, Dani Filth schrieb Texte für mehrere Songs und so entstand in den letzten Monaten ihr Debütalbum „The Great And Secret Show“, das sich mit allerlei düsteren und gruseligen Themen beschäftigt. Deshalb haben wir die Gelegenheit genutzt um der DEVILMENT-Keyboarderin Lauren Francis einige Fragen zu stellen.

Hallo! Danke dass du dir Zeit dafür nimmst mir einige Fragen zu beantworten.
Warst du schon einmal in Österreich?


Nein, leider nicht!




Wie ist es für dich das einzige weibliche Bandmitglied zu sein?


Ich habe noch nicht in vielen Bands gespielt, aber all die Bands, bei denen ich war, waren von Männern dominiert. Ich finde nicht, dass es viel Unterschied für mich macht, in einer Band mit Frauen oder Männern zu spielen. Ich denke, die Unterschiede sind die Themen zwischen den Mitgliedern. Frauen sprechen über Make-up und solche Dinge, und die Männer haben andere Interessen.


Hast du davor schon in anderen Bands gespielt?


Ja, habe ich, aber dies ist meine erste Metal Band. Davor habe ich mehr Pop / Soul gemacht. Ich arbeitete zu dieser Zeit mit dem Bass-Spieler Nick von DEVILMENT und er brachte mich in Kontakt mit DEVILMENT. Aber ich habe früher auch auf Hochzeiten und bei ähnlichen Ereignissen gespielt.


Hast du mit DEVILMENT auch schon live gespielt?

Dies wird meine erste Tour mit DEVILMENT sein, aber ich habe vorher schon einmal auf einem kleinen Festival in Großbritannien gespielt, und es war cool auf der Mainstage sein. Aber vielleicht werden wir bei einigen Festivals im nächsten Jahr auftreten.


Auf eurer Facebook-Seite seid ihr alle angemalt und seht sehr schmutzig aus – wer hatte die Idee und magst du das?


Dieses Bild ist ein Stillshot aus dem Video, das wir für "Even Your Blood Group Rejects Me" gemacht haben und das Zeug auf meinem Gesicht sind Blutspritzer, aber es ist nur schwarz und weiß und so folgt es dem Thema des Videos. Aber Ich würde gern ein wenig mehr auf Glamour setzen, aber es war für das Video, also ist es Spaß.




Werdet ihr bei den Live-Auftritten auch so gestylt sein?


Ich bin nicht sicher. Wir haben tatsächlich noch keine endgültige Entscheidung getroffen. Ich denke, wir machen das von der Show abhängig, ob wir diese Blutspritzer im Gesicht haben werden.


Bald wird das neue DEVILMENT-Album veröffentlicht – was sind deine Erwartungen?


Ich muss sagen, ich weiß es wirklich nicht, weil das so neu für mich ist. Ich musste wirklich viel über Metal und die Entwicklung des Metal lernen. Ich hoffe, es wird sehr gut aufgenommen werden. Ich liebe das Album, ich denke, es ist großartig geworden und es macht mich stolz auf alles, wofür wir gearbeitet und alles zusammen zu einem guten Ende gebracht haben. Ich bin wirklich begeistert von diesem Album. Es enthält viel verschiedene Klänge und verschiedene Stile, sodass für jeden etwas dabei sein wird.


Warst du in das Songwriting involviert oder war das nur Arbeit der anderen Bandmitglieder?


Wir waren alle beteiligt. Am Anfang kamen die Ideen von Colin Finch, aber dann haben wir alle unsere Einflüsse dazu gegeben und viel zusammen gearbeitet. DEVILMENT ist ein aktiver Verein von Musikern.


Wie lange habt ihr an diesem Album gearbeitet?


Es waren ein paar Monate, einige Teile wurden vollständig aufgezeichnet, dann mussten wir aufgrund anderer Verpflichtungen einiger Bandmitglieder unterbrechen. Dani musste eine Tour mit CRADLE OF FILTH spielen und als wir wieder ins Studio kamen und uns das anhörten, was wir schon gemacht hatten, haben einige Leute doch noch ein wenig ihre Sounds verändert. Aber das war wirklich gut für uns.


Welcher ist dein Lieblingstitel auf dem Album?


Ich mag "The Great And Secret Show" am Liebsten, weil ich denke, es hat eine wirklich gute Art von Groove und viel Atmosphäre. Ich mag wirklich alle Songs, aber dieses Lied hat alle Elemente, die signifikant für dieses Album sind.




Nach dem Release ist eine Tour durch Europa geplant. Freust du dich darauf?


Ich bin sehr aufgeregt und sehr nervös, aber das ist das Gefühl wenn ich auf die Bühne gehen kann und ich bin schon sehr gespannt. Wir werden LACUNA COIL supporten und ich mag diese Band sehr gerne. LACUNA COIL haben viele tolle Songs, sie sind wirklich cool und ich liebe die Stimme von Cristina Scabbia. Leider werden wir mit dieser Tour nicht nach Österreich kommen.


Wie ist es mit Dani Filth zu arbeiten? Was für eine Art Mensch ist er?


Er ist wirklich cool. Er ist lustig, und bringt uns oft zum Lachen. Er ist ein Perfektionist, und seine Leidenschaft ist die Musik und es ist wirklich gut um ihn herum sein. Er hilft immer den Menschen, ihren besten Weg Musik zu machen zu finden.


Seine Stimme ist oft sehr schreiend? Magst du das?


Ich mag es, ich liebe diese Art von Gesang und für mich ist es ziemlich cool.


Glaubst du an den Teufel?


Nein, ich bin Agnostiker. Aber ich interessiere mich für Religionen, und es gibt sehr religiöse Menschen in meiner Familie. Aber ich glaube nicht an Teufel und ich verwende nicht viel von meiner Zeit damit, über den Teufel nachzudenken.


Was macht dir Angst?


Ich mag es nicht mich isoliert zu fühlen! Der Gedanke erschreckt mich, vielleicht von denjenigen, die ich liebe, isoliert zu werden.




Was möchtest du euren Fans und unseren Lesern noch mitteilen?


Ich möchte sagen, ich möchte allen danken die uns unterstützt haben und unsere Sachen hören. Wir sind sehr gespannt auf euch und hoffen, dass wir euch irgendwo sehen.

DEVILMENT was originally founded in 2011 by the British musician Daniel Finch, but only when he came into contact with Dani Filth of CRADLE OF FILTH, it went forward with the band. They gathered some British musicians around them, Dani Filth wrote lyrics for several songs and so emerged in the last few months their debut album "The Great And Secret Show", which employ with several sorts of dark and creepy topics.
Therefore, we have utilized the opportunity to ask the DEVILMENT-keyboardist Lauren Francis some questions.

Thank you very much for your time to answer me some questions.
Have you ever been in Austria before?


No, I haven´t been there unfortunately.


How is it for you, to be the only woman in a band?


I have not been in quite a lot of bands, but in all of the bands I was, were the predominant male. I don´t find, that it makes much difference for me, to play in a band with women or men. I think, the differences are the themes between the members. Women talk about makeup and such things, and men have other interests.


Have you played in other bands before?


Yes, in other bands, but this is my first Metal Band. Before I made more Pop, Slash, Soul. I worked with the bass player Nick from Devilment in this time and he brought me in contact with Devilment. But before I also played on weddings and such events.


Have you played live with DEVILMENT until yet?


This will be my first tour with DEVILMENT, but I have played before on a small festival in Britain and it was cool to be on mainstage. But maybe we are going to play festivals next year.


On your Facebook-picture you are all painted and looking very dirty – who had the idea and do you like this?


This picture is a stillshot taken from the video for “Even Your Blood Group Rejects Me” and the stuff on my face is blood spatter but it´s only black and white, so it´s following the theme of the video. But I like it to put up a little bit more glamorous, but it was for the video, so it´s fun.


Will you also been styled in this way for live acts?


I´m not sure. We haven´t actually made a final decision. I think, we will make it depending on the show, if we use this blood spatter in the face.


Soon will be a new DEVILMENT album released. What are your expectations?


I have to say I really don´t know, because it´s so new to me. I was just really learning about Metal and the Metal evolution. I hope it will be taken very well. I love the album, I think it is great and it makes me proud about everything we worked and everything come together in the end. I´m really excited about this release. There were mixed different sounds and different styles, for that it could be something for everyone.


Have you been involved in songwriting or was this the work of the other bandmembers?


We all were involved. In the beginning the ideas came from Colin Finch, but then we all gave our influences to the stuff and worked a lot together. DEVILMENT is an active club of musicians.


How long were you working on this album?


It was quite a few months, some parts were recorded completely then we had to break up because of other commitments of some band members. Dani had to play a tour with CRADLE OF FILTH and when we went back to the studio and listened back what we had done, and some people changed a little bit their sounds. But that was really good for us.


What is your favourite title on the album?


I really like “The Great And Secret Show” because I think it has a really good kind of groove and a lot of atmosphere. I like all songs really, but this song have all the elements that are significant for this album.


There is planned a tour through Europe after release. Are you looking forward to this tour?


I´m very excited and quite nervous, but that´s the feeling when I go on stage, but I´m really looking forward. We will support LACUNA COIL and I really like this band. LACUNA COIL got lots of catchy songs, it´s really cool and I love the voice of Cristina Scabbia. Unfortunately we will not come to Austria with this tour.


How is it to work with Dani Filth? What kind of man is he?

He is really cool. He is funny, he is always up for a laugh. He is a perfectionist, and his passion is music and it is really good to be around him. He always helps the people to find their best way to make music.


His voice is often very screaming – do you like this?


I like it, I love that kind of singing and for me it is pretty cool


Do you believe in the devil?


No, I´m agnostic. I´m interested in religions, and there are very religious people in my family. But I don´t really believe in Devil, and I don´t use many of my time thinking about the devil.


What scares you?


I don´t like feeling isolated! It scares me to be maybe isolated from that ones I love.


What do you want to tell your fans and our readers?


I want to say, thank you so much to all that supported us and listen to our stuff. We are very looking forward to you and hope to see you anywhere.
