Die Schwedischen Urgesteine IN FLAMES scheiden mit ihrem aktuellen Werk "Siren Charms" die Geister wie eh und je. Der Erfolg bleibt ihnen dennoch nicht aus, denn die neue Stufe von IN FLAMES hat durchaus Potential und live sind die Göteborger nach wie vor eine unerreichte Macht. Frontmann Anders Fridén stellte im Interview klar, dass ihm Genrebezeichnungen, Shitstorms und Unveständnis der Fans nicht sonderlich interessieren.


Wie geht es dir und wie läuft die Tour bisher?


Es ist großartig. Wir haben ein gute Zeit. Wir waren seit über einem Jahr nicht mehr auf der Straße vor dieser Tour, so ist es natürlich großartig wieder zurück zu sein um Shows zu spielen.


Ihr habt ja im vergangenen Jahr einige Shows abgesagt...




Ja, wir haben beschlossen, dass wir die Festivals absagen, sollten wir das Album verschieben. Das haben wir dann in letzter Minute so beschlossen, damit wir gleich nach dem Albumrelease auf Tour gehen können.


Also war das Album der einzige Grund für die Absage?


Ja, so konnten wir direkt nach unser letzten Tour das Album aufnehmen und direkt in die Promotion und das ganze Zeug starten. Das war am besten für die Band, denn so hatten wir auch eine kurze Pause.


Was ist eigentlich mit dem Jesterhead hier auf den Backstagepässen passiert?


(grinst). Das ist Speck mit einem Ei! Ich weiß nicht genau warum... unser Tourmanager ist Brite, also hat er Speck und Eier mitgebracht.


Euer neues Album „Siren Charms“ wurde vor ein paar Wochen veröffentlicht. Wie zufrieden bist du mit dem Ergebnis und den Reaktionen bisher?




Ich bin wirklich zufrieden damit wie das Album klingt. Definitiv. Es ist exakt das Album das wir machen wollten. Was die Reaktionen betrifft – es sieht so aus als ob es wirklich gut ankommt wenn wir die Songs live spielen. Ich kümmere mich nicht großartig darum, was im Internet so abgeht, denn sonst würde ich nur anfangen mir den Kopf zu kratzen über das, was da die Leute so schreiben. Ich meine, jedes Mal wenn wir ein Album veröffentlichen, passiert das Gleiche: „ich hasse es, ich liebe es, ich hasse es, ich liebe es...“ - immer die gleichen Reaktionen.


Also interessieren euch die Shitstorms und dummen Jammereien auf eurer Facebook-Seite nach wie vor nicht?


Nein, ich denke, sobald wir anfangen auf solche Leute zu hören und sie in unsere Köpfe lassen, hast du deinen eigenen Weg bereits verloren. Ich mache was ich liebe und ich bin sehr stolz auf alles was wir bisher gemacht haben, auf jedes einzelne Album bis heute und das kann mir keiner mehr nehmen.


Ich war anfangs sehr überrascht als ich „Siren Charms“ hörte, aber ich hab dem Album Zeit gegeben und es gefällt mir mittlerweile sehr gut, besser sogar als „Sounds....“.


Ja, es ist ein Album das Zeit braucht. Aber es ist wie mit jedem Album. Wir versuchen einfach gute Melodien zu schreiben, das ist was wir machen, aber mit jedem Album ändern wir etwas ein bisschen, so dass die Fans nicht wirklich genau sagen können was auf sie zukommt. Obwohl es ziemlich IN FLAMES sein wird, natürlich.


Es sieht so aus, als ob ihr einen recht genauen Plan gehabt hättet für dieses Album. Wieviel habt ihr euch im Vorhinein über die Richtung unterhalten?


Wir reden eigentlich überhaupt nicht miteinander. (lacht)
Nein, wir sprechen nie über die Richtung. Was passiert, passiert. Wir hatten ein paar Riffs geschrieben und ein paar kleine Parts von Songs fertig. Dann sind wir nach Deutschland ins Studio gegangen, wo wir das ganze Ding zusammengebastelt haben und dabei konnte eine Idee sich zu etwas komplett anderem entwickeln. Vieles änderte sich dann. Ich hatte zu dem Zeitpunkt auch noch keine Vocals fertig. Alles passierte erst dann.




Ihr habt als Death Metal Band begonnen, dann nannte man es Modern Metal. Denkst du, dass es überhaupt noch möglich ist, euren Stil auf diese Weise zu beschreiben?


Es ist mir egal. Du kannst es nennen wie immer du willst. Ich meine, wir sind Metal. Das ist, wo wir herkommen und was wir ausdrücken. Ich denke nicht das wir diese oder jene Band oder was auch immer sind. Als wir damals starteten hatten wir natürlich mehr Death Metal in uns an diesem Punkt, weil es genau das war, was wir machen wollten. Es zog mich nach Heavy Metal, Punk und Hardcore, weil ich dachte es gäbe da keine Regeln. Ich dachte du kannst machen was immer du willst, aber als ich tiefer in die Szene eintauchte, kamen sie mit all diesen Regeln daher und sagten mir ich kann dies und jenes nicht machen und etwas nicht so oder so sehen… und da gibt es auch so viele kleine Genres innerhalb des Heavy Metal, also kümmere ich mich heute nicht mehr um solche Dinge. Wir sind einfach eine Metal Band.


Was kannst du mir zum Titel „Siren Charms“ erzählen?


Es hat viele Bedeutungen. Ich habe viele Dokumentation gesehen, in denen es um Menschen in misslichen Lagen ging, viel Drogenzeug, Familientragöden und so weiter. Ich schreibe nicht über sowas, aber nutze es als Inspiration. Ich denke, dass wir durch unser Leben mit all den Hürden gehen müssen. Ich denke auch, dass wir hart arbeiten müssen, um als Mensch besser zu werden. Manchmal ist der einfach Weg aber nicht der korrekte. Wenn wir hart arbeiten und durch gewisse Dinge durchkämpfen, kommen wir am Ende hoffentlich als bessere Menschen hervor. Und die Sirene ist ein Symbol in seiner dunklen und mysteriösen Velockung – es könnte alles sein, es kommt darauf an, wie du es siehst – natürlich habe ich da eine bestimmte Sicht, aber wir können verschiedene haben. So haben wir also alle unsere Sirenen, die auf der dunklen Seite lauern und es ist wichtig, dass wir solche Dinge umarmen solange wir können und auf der andere Seite heraus ankommen.


Was inspiriert dich für deine Texte? Ich denke, es ist dir wichtig nicht zu direkt zu den Leuten zu sein…


Ja, das ist richtig. Es ist für die Leute viel wertvoller, wenn sie über meine Texte von ihrem ganz eigenen Standpunkt aus nachdenken. Wenn jemand zu mir kommt und mir erzählt, er denkt es geht in einem Text um das oder das, würde ich nie „Nein“ dazu sagen. Ich denke, ich würde ihm dann das wegnehmen, was den Song für ihn so persönlich macht. Ich habe schon eine sehr genau Idee, aber ich nutze Metaphern die auf verschiedene Dinge und Leute zeigen können. Als Inspiration nutze ich grundsätzlich mein ganzes Leben. Was ich schreibe ist sehr persönlich, es muss aber nicht heute oder gestern passieren. Es kann schon viele Jahre zurückliegen. Außerdem nutze ich wie erwähnte Dinge wie Dokumentationen und Leute die ich treffe oder mit denen ich rede und was auch immer es wert ist genutzt zu werden…. Ich kann keine Texte über Dämonen und Drachen schreiben, auch nicht über Krieg, das bin nicht ich. Ich möchte, dass die Leute die Texte mir zuordnen können.


Wie lief das Songwriting dieses Mal? Konnte Niklas auch etwas beitragen?


Niklas hat anfangs nichts dazu beigetragen, was das Songwriting betrifft, aber bei den Aufnahmen war er dabei. Er hat einen eigenen Picking-Stil und seine Art zu riffen, außerdem hat er eine Menge Energie in die Band gebracht. Als wir in die ernste Situation kamen, dass Jesper ging, hat er neues Leben in die Band gebracht. Was das Schreiben betrifft – Björn und ich machen die Musik und die Texte. Die Produktion lief dieses Mal schneller. Letztes Mal hatten wir drei Monate, dieses Mal nur die Hälfte der Zeit, also sechs Wochen. So war es sehr viel intensiver. Aber ich denke wir haben das gebraucht – einen Arschtritt um alles zum Laufen zu bringen. Es war auch wichtig in Berlin isoliert zu sein, nicht nach Hause zu gehen und von unseren Familien und anderen Dingen abgelenkt zu sein.


Was ist mit eurem eigenen Studio?


Das haben wir vor gut ein Jahr vor den Aufnahmen verkauft. Ich habe aber noch ein eigenes Studio gemeinsam mit Daniel Bergstrand in Uppsala.


Was kannst du mir zum Cover-Artwork erzählen?


Du kannst es auf zwei verschiedene Weisen sehen. Du hast die Sirene mit den Flügeln und dieses als Person die er, sie oder wer auch immer sein könnte. Du kannst zum anderen sehen, dass sie in ihren letzten Tagen absorbiert und reingezogen wird von der Sirene und verschwindet, aber auch als eine Art Wiedergeburt, also etwas das herauskommt. Es kommt darauf an… es könnte der Anfang oder das Ende sein.




Ich mag auch die Artworks im Booklet. Wie viel habt ihr dem Künstler vorgegeben?


Ich sage ihnen nie genau was sie tun sollen, ich sage ihnen nur welche Art von Stimmung ich haben will und gebe ihnen die Texte. Dieses Mal war es Blake Armstron der auch die Jesters Curse Comics gemacht hat. Er ist wirklich talentiert und ein cooler Typ. Er hat mir die Sachen gezeigt, die er gemacht hat und ich sagte: „ja großartige Richtung“ oder „nicht so tolle Richtung“ oder was auch immer. Wer auch immer IN FLAMES Covers gemacht hat, sollte das auch selbst tun, denn er ist der Künstler, aber ich mache Vorschläge. Ich gebe ihnen eine Art Richtung vor.


Ich mag auch die Connection in Richtung alter Tage mit dem „Whoracle“-Tor.


Yeah, das ist wirklich cool. Wir haben das einfach so gemacht… wir sind sehr stolz auf unsere Vergangenheit. Das ist es was uns zu dem gemacht haben was wir sind und wir lieben solche Momente.


Wie schwer ist es heutzutage eine Setlist zu gestalten?


Es ist hart. Wir spielen ungefähr 90 Minuten. Natürlich wollen wir den Kids immer neues Zeug bieten. Und um ehrlich zu sein, manche der alten Songs… es scheint unser Publikum hat sich etwas verändert. Die alten Songs funktionieren nicht mehr so gut wie die Neuen. Wir hören immer: „spielt altes Zeug“, und wir wollen es für die Harcore-Fans auch versuchen, aber jedes Mal wenn wir das machen, ist es als ob da keine Reaktion kommt. Es ist merkwürdig. Aber wir versuch in der Geschichte zurückzugehen. Auf dieser Tour gehen wir mit „Resin“ bis „Colony“ zurück.




Aber wenn ihr nur einen so alten Song spielt, scheint es als ob „Resin“ ein bisschen fehl am Platz wirkt. Wie passt er denn rein?


Ich denke es passt perfekt. Du wirst es sehen! Es ist so, dass ich mir wirklich Gedanken über die Dynamik der Setlist mache und somit bin ich mir sicher dass es perfekt passt. Du bekommst ein Geld zurück, falls es dir nicht gefällt (lacht).


Ich habe auch gesehen, dass ihr das Set etwas abgeändert habt. Ihr habt „The Quiet Place“ reingenommen und dafür „Monsters In The Ballroom“ rausgenommen. Warum?


Ja, wir spielen viele neue Songs und die Leute vermissten „The Quiet Place“. Aber wir werden ihn vielleicht wieder rein bringen. Wir werden sehen.


Ihr werdet eure Shows in Schweden mitfilmen für einen DVD-Release. Warum habt ihr Schweden gewählt. Klar, es ist euer Zuhause, aber gibt es noch andere Gründe?


Damit hast du dir die Frage selbst beantwortet. Außerdem sind es die größten Shows der Tour. Wir haben von unserer Heimat Göteborg so viel bekommen, darum wollen wir auch etwas dort dokumentieren bevor es vorbei ist.


Also habt ihr euch sicher eine spezielle Show mit viel Lichtshow usw. überlegt?


Wir haben etwas an Bling-Bling-Lichtern mit, klar.




Warum hat es eigentlich mehr als drei Jahre gedauert, um das Album fertig zu machen?


Ich denke es dauert immer in etwas diese Zeit. Wir waren auf Tour für das letzte Album. Und wie wir vorhin drüber gesprochen haben, wir haben im November aufgenommen und im Jänner gemixt, aber wenn wir es noch vor dem Sommer veröffentlicht hätten, wären wir gleich in einen neuen Zyklus gestartet. Wir brauchten eine Pause und das war eigentlich der erste Sommer in 15 Jahren in dem wir gar nichts gemacht haben. Immer Festivals, Festivals, Festivals, wir waren nie daheim bei unseren Kindern und Familien. Auch wir brauchen hin und wieder Urlaub.


Wie sehr magst du das Tourleben und so viel unterwegs zu sein heute noch?f>>

Ich liebe es zu spielen. Ich mag nicht immer alles – auch ich habe schlechte Tage. Aber ich bin dieses Leben gewohnt. Es ist ganz normal für mich. Abseits der Stage hast du Zeit tot zu schlagen und tust Dinge damit dieses vergeht. Ich habe ein Label das ich am Laufen hab, also kann ich auch meinen Computer arbeiten, was Zeit in Anspruch nimmt, also es passt so.

How are you doing and how is the tour going on so far?


It´s great. We are having a good time. We were off the road for more than a year previous this tour, so it’s great to be back and play some shows.


You cancelled shows last year...


Yeah, we decided, if we have to postpone the record, we don´t want to do the festivals. So we deceided it in the last minute, so we can jump in with the tour right after the release.


So, the record was the only reason to cancel the festivals?


Yeah, so we would come of the tour, record the album and go straight into the promotion and all that stuff. I think this so it was best for the band to have the short break in the summer.


What happened to the chesterhead on the backstage-passes?


(grins). It´s bacon with an egg! I don´t really know why... our tourmanager is british so he brought eggs and bacon


Your new record “Siren Charms” was released a couple of weeks ago. How satisfied are you now with the material and the reactions and so on?


I´m really satisfied how the album sounds. Definitely. It´s exact the album we wanted to make. And about the reactions – it seems it goes down really very well when we played the live-shows. I don´t pay much attention about what´s going on in the net, because i will only start scratching my head about what the people writing. I mean, every time releasing an album, it´s the same thing: “I hate it, I love it, I hate it, I love it...” it´s the same reaction.


So, you still don´t care about the shitstorms and stupid morning around on you facebook-site and so on?


No, i think as soon we are start to listen to those people and let them get into your head, you sort of lost your way already. I do what i love and I am very proud of everything we´ve done, of every single album we have done until today and nobody can change that.


At the first place when i heard “Siren Charms” I was surprised, but I gave this album time and i really like it, even more than “Sounds...”.


Yeah it´s an album that needs time. But it´s like every album, we sort of trying to write good melodies, that´s what we do, but with every album we try to change a little bit and so the fans can guess, i don´t want to say struggling, but they so they don´t know exactly what they gonna get. Even though it´s very much IN FLAMES, of course.


It seems you had a quite clear plan for this one. How much did you talk about the direction and so on before you started the songwriting?


We don´t talk at all (laughs)
No, we don´t talk about the direction. What happens, happens then. We had a bunch of riffs written, and small parts of songs. Then we went to Germany in the stuido, that’s where we put the whole thing together and an idea can transform to something totally else. A lot of things changed then. I didn´t had any vocals or anything done. Everything happened right then.


You started as a Death Metal band, than they called it Modern Metal. Do you think it´s still possible to describe you sound in a way like that?


I don´t care. You can call it whatever you want. I mean, we are Metal. That´s what we come from, that´s our expression. I don´t think we are this band or that band or whatever. Once we started, of course we had more Death Metal in us at that point, because that was exactly what we wanted to do. But i don´t care so much about genres. That´s not important. I was attracted to Heavy Metal and Punk and Hardcore, because i thought there were no rules. I thought you can do whatever you want and then when i was deeper into this scene, they came up with all this rules and they told me you can´t do this, you can´t do that, you can´t look that way... and there are so many different small genres within Heavy Metal, so today i don´t pay attention to this. So we are a Metal Band.


What can you tell me about the idea of the title “Siren Charms?


It has lots of meanings. I was watching a lot of documentaries of people in poor situations like a lot of drug related stuff, family tragedies and so on. I don´t write about that at all, but i used it as an inspiration. I think we have to go through live with obstacles. I think we have to work hard to become better as people. And sometimes the easy path is not the correct path. If we have to struggle and work hard, hopefully we come through this as a better person in the end. And the Siren is symbolising in it´s dark and mysterious temptation – it could be whatever, it depends how you look at it – i have a certain view obviously, but we can have different one. So we all have our siren lurking from the darker side and it´s important, that we embrace those things as long as we can go and come up on the other side.


What are your inspiration in lyrics now? I guess it´s important to you not be to direct to the people...


Yeah, that´s true. It´s more valuable for a person if they think about my lyrics from their own perspective. When someone comes to me and tells me what he thinks this song is about, I will never say no. I think I would take away for them what is personal for them in that song. Yeah, I have a very direct idea, but i use a lot of metaphors that can applied to different things and different people. As inspiration is basically my whole live. What I am writing about is very personal but is hasn´t to be happened today or yesterday. I could be many years back in time. And then I use also things like i told before, like these documentaries and people i meet and talk to and whatever it attract to get it in into... I can´t write about demons and dragons, I can´t write about war-things, that´s not me. I want people to relate to my lyrics.


How was the songwriting this time and did Niklas contribute stuff this time?


Niklas didn´t contribute anything in the first place when it comes to the writing, but he was there recording. He has a certain picking-style and way of riffing and he brought a lot of energie in the band. When we came in to this sort of serious situation when Jesper left, he brought new life into the band. But writing – it´s Björn and me that writes the music and the lyrics. The production this time was quicker. Last time we had three months, now we had half the time – six weeks. So it was way more intense. But i think we needed that –a kick in the ass just to get things running. And it was important for us to be isolated in Berlin, not to go home to our families and have distractions.


What about your own studio?


We actually sold the studio one year before we started the recordings. I have a own studio together with Daniel Bergstrand in Uppsala.


What can you tell me about the cover-artwork?


You can look at it two different ways. You have the siren with the wings and this person which could be he or she or whatever. Either you can look at it that it´s very last days absorbed by the whole siren and disappear or you can see it a sort of a rebirth and coming out of them. It depends... it could be the beginning and it could be the end.


I also really like the artworks inside the booklet. How much did you tell the artist what you want to get?


I don´t tell them exactly what they should do, i tell him what kind of mood I want it to be and I give them the lyrics. This time it was by Blake Armstrong who did this Jesters Curse Comic for us. He is really talented and a super cool guy. He showed me his pieces he did and i said: “yeah, great direction” or “not so great direction” or whatever. Who ever made IN FLAMES Covers should do it by himself, because he is the artist, but i have suggestions. I sort of give them a direction.


I also like the connection to the old days with the “Whoracle” Door...”


Yeah, that’s really cool. We made it just like that... we are very proud of our history. That´s what made us who we are an i love those moments.


How hard is it nowadays to create a setlist?


It´s hard. We play about 90 minutes. So obviously we wan´t to show the kids new stuff all the time. And to be honest some of the old songs... it seems our audience changed a little bit. The old songs dosn´t go down as the new ones. We hear evertyime: “play some old stuff” and we want to try it for the hardcore fans and erverytime we do it there is like no reaction. It´s strange. But we try to go back into history. In this set tonight we go back to “Colony” with “Resin”.


But if you play only one old song it seems like “Resin” is a little bit misplaced between all the new songs. How does it fit in?


I think it fits perfect. You will see! The thing is, i really think about the dynamic in the setlist and to me it fits very well. You will get you money back if you don´t like it (laughs)


I saw you changed the setlist a little bit. You took in “The Quiet Place” and kicked a new one – “Monsters In The Ballroom” – what was the reason?


Yeah. We already play a lot of new songs and people missed “The Quiet Place”. But we might throw it back in again. We will see.


You will record a two shows in Sweden for a DVD-release. Why did you choose Sweden? Of course it´s you home, but are there other reasons?


You answered your own question. Well these are the biggest shows on our tour. We got so much from our hometown Goteborg and we want to keep something back in documents before it´s over.


So I guess we can expect on this tour a big show with many lights and so on...


We do have some bling-bling lights, yeah.


Why did it take more than three years this time to bring out the new record?


I think it always takes a sort of that time. We toured quite a lot for the previous album. And as we talked about before, we recorded it in November, mixed it in January and to have it out before summer it would go straight into a new cycle. So we needed a break and this was actually the first summer in 15 years we didn´t do anything at all. Always Festival, Festivals, Festivals, we are never home with our kids and families. Even we need some vacation for once in a while.


How much do you still like the tour live and to be on the road for months?


I love to play. I don´t like everything all the time – i have bad days to. I´m used to this live. For me it´s like normal. Outside of the stage you have to kill time and do things to get by. I have a record company that i run, so I can work on my computer and that takes time, so it´s fine.
