Die Heavy Metal Sensation ASTRAL DOORS melden sich nach einer kleineren Pause mit dem neuen und bisher düstersten Werk "Notes From The Shadows" zurück. Obwohl Nils Patrik Johansson (CIVIL WAR, LIONS SHARE, WUTHERING HEIGHTS) viel um die Ohren hat, nahm er sich die Zeit um mit uns über das Album zu sprechen.


Hi Nils Patrik, was treibst du im Moment?


Im Moment promote ich das kommende Album und geben haufenweise Interviews. Mein Terminkalender ist ziemlich voll, aber es macht mir sehr viel Spaß, also kein Problem!




Dein nächstes Album mit den ASTRAL DOORS erscheint in Kürze. Wie fühlst du dich im jetzt mit „Notes From The Shadows“?


Es ist besser geworden, als wir uns jemals vorgestellt hätten. Die Songs passend toll zusammen und der Sound ist atemberaubend. Ein großes Danke an Jonas Kjellgren von den Black Lounge Studios dafür!


Was sind denn die Unterschiede zum Vorgänger „Jerusalem“ und gibt es dieses Mal wieder ein Konzept oder Grundthema?


Oh, es ist hart bestimmte Unterschiede aufzuzeigen. „Notes From The Shadows“ fühlt sich wie eine natürliche Entwicklung für uns als Musiker und Songwriter an.


“Jerusalem“ wurde vor ungefähr drei Jahren veröffentlicht, was ist inzwischen bei ASTRAL DOORS alles passiert?


Wir haben eine Headliner-Tour gemacht um das Album zu promoten und auch ein paar Festivals. Danach haben wir einige Zeit an anderen Projekten gearbeitet. Es war gut etwas voneinander getrennt zu sein, weil uns das den Hunger zurück gab um der Welt zu zeigen, was für eine großartige Band wir sind.




Wie liefen Songwriting und Produktion dieses Mal – irgendwelche Unterschiede zur letzten Platte?


Der größte Unterschied war, dass ich alle Vocals bei mir zu Hause aufgenommen habe. Ansonsten haben wir gearbeitet wie immer; Johan, Joachim und manchmal auch Ulf schreiben und nehmen ihre Musik auf und dann schicken sie das an mich und ich mache die Melodien und Texte.


I mag den Stil vom Artwork von „Notes From The Shadows“. Was kannst du mir dazu erzählen?


Wir wollten etwas, was zu den düsteren Texten passt, so haben wir unseren Freund Mattias Eriksson, der schon das Artwork zu „Jerusalem“ gemacht hat, gefragt, ob er uns etwas cooles basteln könnte. Wir sind sehr glücklich mit dem Cover: unser bisher bestes!


Ich hab dich mit CIVIL WAR am Masters Of Rock gesehen. Wie war es für euch? Wir hatten jedenfalls trotz der nachmitternächtlichen Stunde sehr viel Spaß.


Es war großartig. Eine fantastische Crowd, muss ich sagen. Wenn wir unsere größten Hits „I Will Rule The Universe“ und „Rome Is Falling“ gespielt haben, rasteten die Leute komplett aus. Danke an alle die uns dort unterstützt haben!


Ich habe gehört, dass ihr mit CIVIL WAR bereits neues Material aufnehmt. Kannst du dazu schon etwas sagen?


Yeah. Das Album wird etwas wirklich Besonderes. Ich liebe „The Killer Angels“, aber das kommende wird noch stärker. Wir warten gerade auf Napalm Records um einen Release-Termin zu bekommen. Ich weiß dass sie große Erwartungen haben und an uns glauben. Ich fühle, dass das ein Power Metal Klassiker werden kann.




Und was geht zur Zeit bei WUTHERING HEIGHTS und LION´S SHARE ab?


An dieser Front: nichts Neues. Ich weiß nicht genau, aber WUTHERING HEIGHTS scheint im Tiefschlaf zu sein, ebenso wie LION´S SHARE. Wir haben Songs, aber Lars Chriss möchte diese aufheben bis er das Gefühl hat, dass die Zeit dafür reif ist.


Wie schaffst du es eigentlich in so vielen Bands gleichzeitig aktiv zu sein, hältst du dich denn gern selbst auf Trab?


Wie ich sagte sind diese zwei Bands inaktiv im Moment. Ich habe aber ja zwei andere Bands auf die ich mich konzentriere, was kein Problem ist: es macht einfach Spaß!




Gibt es bereits Tourpläne für ASTRAL DOORS?


Darauf kannst du wetten. Wir werden so viele Shows wie möglich spielen um dieses tolle Album zu promoten, so sicher wie die Hölle es verdient. Unser Drummer Johan hat sich seine Hand vor ein paar Monaten verletzt, darum mussten wir die Tour auf den kommenden Winter verschieben, aber wir werden auf jeden Fall auf die Straße raus kommen um alle unsere Freunde da draußen wieder zu sehen. Das ist es, wofür wir leben.


Die letzte Show von ASTRAL DOORS die ich besuchen durfte war vor gut zwei Jahren in Wien, kannst du dich an die Show mit RIOTGOD erinnern?


Ja, ich kann mich gut erinnern, es waren nicht so viele Leute da, aber die Atmosphäre war großartig und wir hatten viel Spaß. Es war auch toll mit den Jungs von RIOTGOD auf Tour zu sein, auch wenn unsere Musik-Stile nicht so gut zusammen passten. Ich liebe deren Zeug, aber nächstes Mal nehmen wir eine Band die besser zu unserem Stil passt mit.




Gibt es noch etwas zu sagen?

Hi Nils Patrik, what are you doing at the moment?


At the moment I’m promoting the upcoming album by giving a lot of interviews. My book is pretty full, but it’s pretty fun, so no problems!


Your new record with ASTRAL DOORS will be out in a few weeks. How do you feel now with “Notes From The Shadows”?


It turned out better than we could even imagine ourselves. The songs fit well together and the sound is amazing. A big thanks to Jonas Kjellgren at Black Lounge for that!


What are the differences in comparison to “Jerusalem”?


OH, it’s tough to point out any big differences. “Notes From The Shadows” feels just like a natural development for us as musicians and songwriters.


“Jerusalem” was released about three years ago, what happened in ASTRAL DOORS meanwhile?


Well, we did a headline tour to promote it and some festivals. After that we’ve been working with other projects for a while. It was good for us to be away from each other for a while because that really gave us the hunger back to once again show the world how great our band is.


How was the songwriting and production this time – any differences to your former record?


The biggest difference is that I recorded all my vocals at my own place. Besides that we worked as we always do: Johan, Joachim and sometimes Ulf write and record the music. Then they send it to me and I create melodies and lyrics.


I like the artwork style of “Notes From The Shadows”. What can you tell me about it?


Well, we wanted something that could match the dark lyrics, so we asked our friend Mattias Eriksson, who also did “Jerusalem”, to come up with something cool. We are very happy about the cover: our best so far.


I saw you with CIVIL WAR a few weeks ago at Masters Of Rock. How was it for you? We had much fun, even it was far beyond midnight.


It was great. Fantastic audience I must say; when we played or biggest hits “I will Rule the Universe” and “Rome is Falling” the people went crazy. Thanks to everyone for the support!


I heard you are already recording material for a second record. Can you already tell anything about it?


Yeah. That album will be something really special. I love “The Killer Angels” but this upcoming album will be stronger. Now we just wait for Napalm to put out a release date. I know that they have high expectations and believe a lot in us. I have a feeling that it can be a power metal classic.


And what can you tell me about things going on with LIONS SHARE and WUTHERING HEIGHTS?


On that front; nothing new. I don’t know really. WUTHERING HEIGHTS seem to be in a deep sleep and it seems to be the same with Lion’s Share; we have songs but Lars Chriss wanna keep them unreleased until he feels that the timing is right.


How do you make it possible to be part in so many bands? Do you like it to keep yourself busy?


As I just said; two of the bands are inactive at the moment so I just have to focus on two bands, which is no problems: just fun!


Are there already tourplans with ASTRAL DOORS?


You bet! We will play as many gigs as possible to promote this fine album, it sure as hell deserves it. Our drummer Johan, injured his hand a couple of months ago, so we had to postpone tourplans until the winter 14/15, but we will absolutely go out on the road to meet all our friends out there again. That’s what we live for!


The last time I was visiting an ASTRAL DOORS show was in Vienna, can you remember the show with RIOTGOD?


Yes, I remember it well, there weren’t so many people there but the atmosphere was great and we had a lot of fun and the Riotgod boys were great to tour with, even though our music styles didn’t match so well. I loved their stuff, but next time we won’t bring a stoner band; we’ll bring a band in our genre.
