Bei meinem Besuch beim Tuska Metal Open Air 2014 in Helsinki hatte ich die Gelegenheit mit Ben Varon von der Finnischen Band AMORAL zu sprechen. Diese Band hat bereits eine lange Geschichte und sie haben über die Jahre hinweg ihren Stil von Death Metal zu Power Metal verändert, und es war sehr interessant, was er mir über diesen Weg Musik zu machen erzählt hat.

Hallo! Sehr schön, dich hier zu treffen!
Ich liebe Finnland, und jedes Jahr bin ich für einige Tage hier - meist in Verbindung mit einem Festival.
Was denkst du ist der Grund, warum es in Finnland so viele gute und erfolgreiche Metal-Bands gibt?


Wir werden das sehr oft gefragt und ich habe mittlerweile meine eigene Theorie dazu. Ich denke, wir werden von den erfolgreichen Finnischen Bands vor uns inspiriert. Als wir Kinder waren, hörten wir immer Bands aus den USA und aus England, weil die meisten Leute sagten, dass all die guten Bands wie METALLICA und PANTERA von dort kommen. Dann kamen CHILDREN OF BODOM heraus, und sie waren aus der Straße gegenüber von uns, und nur ein paar Jahre älter als wir, und sie spielten genauso gut wie alle amerikanischen Bands. Und das war der Punkt, wo wir dachten, wenn die Jungs das können, dann können wir es auch. Und ich denke, das ist ein Schneeball-Effekt hier in Finnland. Es gibt so viele gute Bands und die Kids können sie um sich herum sehen, und viele von ihnen beginnen Instrumente zu spielen. Einige von ihnen schauen nach Oslo und denken, dass es dort eine Menge guter Bands gibt, und sie sich nicht an Bands von der anderen Seite der Welt orientieren müssen. Ich denke, je mehr gute Bands es gibt, desto mehr ist auch möglich. Es ist ein Kreis von Inspiration!




Ist der Wettbewerb sehr hart, oder gibt es Freundschaft zwischen den finnischen Bands?


Gut, es ist ein Wettbewerb, natürlich wegen der großen Zahl an Bands. Zum Beispiel gibt es eine Million Bands die auf dem Tuska spielen wollen, diesen Wettbewerb gibt es immer, aber es ist auch eine große Freundschaft zwischen den Bands. Es liegt nicht in unseren Händen, wohin wir gehen, um zu spielen. Ich habe viele Freunde in der finnischen Metal-Szene aus verschiedenen Bands. Ich denke, es gibt eine Menge Kameradschaft zwischen den Bands. Und wir versuchen, einander zu helfen.


Ihr habt eine sehr lange Bandgeschichte! Was hat sich für dich in diesen Jahren verändert?


Vieles hat sich geändert! Es gibt nur noch mich und den Schlagzeuger als ursprüngliche Band-Mitglieder. Es ist wirklich lustig, wir spielten METALLICA in der Schulband, dann haben wir eine Band gegründet und wir hatten eine Menge Veränderungen in der Band-Formation. Die größte Veränderung war der Sänger-Wechsel und der Gesangsstil. Die ersten drei Alben waren Death Metal, dann fanden wir Ari und es wurde mehr Melodic Metal, wir hatten auch Hard Rock Einflüsse. Musik ist für uns immer Veränderung. Wir haben angefangen mit Death Metal und jedes Album war ein Fortschreiten, aber dann wurde es langweilig und so sagten wir, lasst uns etwas Neues ausprobieren. Ich denke, Veränderung ist notwendig. Ich mag es nicht, die gleiche Musik über viele Jahre hinweg zu machen


Ihr werdet auf eine große Tour mit DARK TRANQUILITY gehen! Was erwartet ihr von dieser Tour?


Ich denke, es wird gut sein. Wir kennen DARK TRANQUILITY nicht, aber wir kennen OMNIUM GATHERUM, die oft mit ihnen auf Tour waren und die sagten uns immer wieder, was für nette Kerle sie sind. Sie sind Schweden, und sie sind eine sehr gute Band und haben eine lange Geschichte, so freuen wir uns sehr darauf, mit ihnen auf Tour gehen.


Bei dieser Tour werdet ihr auch in mein Heimatland Österreich kommen. Wart ihr schon einmal dort – privat oder auf Tour?


Nur auf Tour. Aber Österreich hat so viele Möglichkeiten für Wintersportarten wie Snowboarden. Ich mag das, aber in Finnland gibt es nur kleine Hügel und die Pisten sind zu kurz. Ich würde gerne einer dieser Reisen machen - zwei Stunden nach oben gehen und sich Zeit nehmen und den ganzen Tag nutzen, um nach unten zu kommen. Aber es ist schwer, Snowboarden mit Musik zu verbinden. Ich ging einmal in diesem Winter vor unserer Album-Release Show Snowboarden und ich war besonders vorsichtig, aber meine Hände taten trotzdem weh - es ist gefährlich!




Ihr habt ein neues Album mit dem Titel "Fallen Leaves & Dead Sparrows "veröffentlicht - was war die Idee hinter diesem Titel?


Die Titel stammt aus dem Text des letzten Songs. Es ist ein Konzept-Album, so gibt es ein fortlaufendes Thema in dem Album und ein Teil des Textes aus dem letzten Song heißt "Fallen Leaves, Mistake For Dead Sparrows". Als ich die Texte geschrieben habe, fand ich bei einem Spaziergang einen toten Vogel auf dem Weg und daneben verschiedene Blätter. Und dann sah ich diesen Vogel überall und dachte, was will mir das Universum damit sagen? Und so ist das Thema für das Album und auch das Album-Cover entstanden.


Was inspiriert dich, um einen neuen Song zu machen? Was sind deine bevorzugten Themen?


Es gibt keine spezifische Formel dazu. Zum Glück könnte es alles sein. Es könnte sein, dass ich eine Band sehe und sie haben ein cooles Riff, und dieser kleine Teil von dem Song inspiriert mich, etwas anderes auszuprobieren. Oder zu Fuß durch Helsinki zu gehen, oder einfach nur Gedanken entstehen lassen. Es könnte alles aus dem wirklichen Leben sein.


Wie lange habt ihr am neuen Album gearbeitet und war es nur deine Arbeit?


Nein, es gibt eine Menge Musik von Masi, unserem Gitarristen und auch ein wenig von unserem Bassisten, aber ich mache die Lines, und teile die Arbeit auf. Ich denke an das ganze Paket - die Guidelines, die Texte und diese Dinge, aber die anderen Jungs helfen mir sehr viel. Ich denke, etwa ein Jahr dauerte es, wenn ich anfange, Songs zu schreiben, das Schreiben beende, die Proben mit der Band, der Buchung des Studios und bereit zu sein für das Studio. Dann brauche ich ein Jahr, um vom Album wegzukommen und mich für das nächste zu inspirieren.




Was sind deine Erwartungen an das neue Album?


Ich weiß nicht! Was kann man mehr erwarten? Mehr verkaufen oder Sachen wie diese?
Die Songs sind sehr lang und sehr progressiv und es ist nicht so einfache Pop-Musik. Und all die Bewertungen waren großartig - bisher bestes Album. Das ist phantastisch! Aber ich hoffe, mehr Zuhörer zu finden - das ist der schwierige Teil heutzutage. Es ist nicht nur wichtig ein gutes Album zu machen. Es ist eine große Herausforderung, Leute zu finden die es hören, weil es so viele Alben jeden Tag gibt. Das ist, warum wir Interviews machen und rund um die Welt reisen.


Welche Pläne habt ihr für die Zukunft?


Wenn wir kommende Tour im November beenden dann werden wir im Dezember Pause machen, und ich denke, dass ich neue Sachen schreiben werde. Die Songs entstehen bereits und ich glaube, ich habe fast das nächste Album schon geschrieben.

At my visit on Tuska Metal Open Air 2014 in Helsinki I had the possibility to talk with Ben Varon from the Finnish Metal Band AMORAL. This band has a long history and changed her style over the years from Death Metal to Power Metal and it was very interesting, what he had to tell about this way of making music.

Hello!Very nice to meet you here! I love Finland, and every year I ?m here for some days – most in connection with a festival. What do you think is the reason, why are in Finland so many good and successful Metal Bands?


We get asked that a lot, and I actually have my own theory about it. I think, we get inspired from the successful bands from Finland before us. When we were kids, we always listened to bands from the United States and from England, because most people say, that all the good bands come from there like METALLICA and PANTERA. Then CHILDREN OF BODOM came out, and they were across the street from us, and they were just a few years older than us, and they were playing just as good as all the American bands. And that was the point when we thought, when those guys can do it, we can do it as well. And I think, that is a snowball-effect here in Finland. There are so many good bands and the kids could see them around them and many of them start to play instruments. Some of them look to Oslo and think, that there are a lot of good bands, and they not orientate to bands from the other side of the world. I think, the more good bands there are, the more could be. It ?s just a circle of inspiration.


Is the competition very hard, or is there friendship between the Finnish bands?


Well, there is a competition of course because of the numbers of the bands. For example there is a million bands to play at Tuska, that competition is all time, but there is also a big friendship among the bands. It ?s not in our hands, where we go to play. I have lots of friends in the Finnish Metal Scene from different bands. I think, there is a lot of camaraderie between the bands. And we try to help each other.


You have a very long band-history! What changed for you in these years?


A lot has changed! There is only me and the drummer original members. It ?s actually funny, we played METALLICA in school music crew, then we formed a band and we had a lot of changes in the band lineup and the biggest change was the vocalist and the vocal style. The first three albums were like Death Metal, then we found Ari and it became more Melodic Metal, we had Hard Rock influences. Music for us is always change. When we started with Death Metal and every album was a progression but we get bored so we said, let ?s try something new. I think, change is needful. I don ?t like to make the same music over the years.


You will go on a big tour with DARK TRANQUILITY! What are you expecting from this tour?


I think, it will be good. We don ?t know DARK TRANQUILITY at all, but we know OMNIUM GATHERUM, that toured a lot with them all over the world, and they always told us, what nice guys they are. They are Swedes, and they are a very good band and have a long history, so we are happy to go on tour with them.


With this tour you will also come to my home country Austria. Have you ever been there before – private or on tour?


Only on tour. But Austria has so many possibilities for winter sports like snowboarding. I like this, but in Finland there are only small hills and the slopes are too short. I would like to make one of those trips – two hours up there and take your time and use the whole day to come down. But it ?s hard to campaign snowboarding with playing music. I went snowboarding once this winter before our Album-Release-Show and I was extra careful, but my hands was still hurting – it ?s dangerous!


You released a new album with the title “Fallen Leaves & Dead Sparrows” – what was the idea behind this title?


The title come from the lyrics of the last song. It ?s a concept-album so there is a running theme in the album and a part of the lyrics from the final song is “Fallen leaves, mistake for dead sparrows”.
When I was writing the lyrics I went for a walk I found a dead bird on the walk way and there were a kind of leaves. And then I was seeing this bird everywhere and thought, what is the universe trying to tell me? And so it became the theme for the album and also the album-cover.


What inspires you to make a new song? What are your preferred themes?


There is no specific formula to it. Luckily it could be anything. It could be that I watch a band and they have a cool riff, just a little part of their song can inspire me to try something else. Or walking around Helsinki or thinking about something. It could be anything from the real life!


How long did you work on the new album and was it only your work?


No, there is a lot of music from Masi, our guitar player and even a little bit from our bass player, but I do the lines, share the work. I like think of the whole package – the guidelines, the lyrics and these things, but the other guys help me a lot. I think, it took about a year when I start writing songs, finished the writing, the rehearsals with the band, booking the studio, being ready for the studio. Then I need a year to get off the album and get inspired for the next one.


What are your expectations to the new album?


I don ?t know! What can you expect anymore? More to sell or stuff like this? The songs are very long and very progressive and it ?s not like easy pop-music. And all the reviews have been great – best album so far. This is amazing! But I hope more people to find – that’s the hard part this day. It ?s not getting a good album out. There is a big challenge, but getting people to hear, because there are so many albums every day. That ?s why we make interviews and travel around the world.


What are your plans for the future?


When we have finished upcoming tour in November, in December we will get off, and I think I will write new stuff. The songs just kept coming and I think I have almost written the next album already.


Some last words to your fans?


Show up at the show, it ?s gonna be good, we want still feel the audience!
