Die Heavy Metal Überflieger GRAND MAGUS veröffentlichten kürzlich mit "Power & Glory" den nächsten Geniestreich und bauten ihren Sound noch etwas weiter aus. Warum das Trio so auf Erfolgskur ist, erfragten wir bei Drummer Ludwig Witt, der auch bei den SPIRITUAL BEGGARS tätigt ist.


Hey, schön dich wieder zu treffen. Wie läuft denn eure Tour und wie geht es dir im Moment?


Alles bestens, danke.




Wie kommt ihr denn mit den anderen Bands (AUDREY HORNE, ZODIAC, THE VINTAGE CARAVAN) dieser Tour aus?


Wirklich gut. Wir teilen uns eigentlich sogar einen einzigen Bus – für vier Bands! (lacht)
Aber es funktioniert wirklich gut, ich habe mit den Jungs von ZODIAC ja auch schon mit den SPIRITUAL BEGGARS gespielt. Das sind wirklich coole Leute, also kann ich mich wirklich nicht beschweren.


Konntest du deren Auftritte schon sehen?


Ja, aber nicht komplett, aber ich hab von jeder Band auf ein paar Shows verteilt ein paar Songs sehen können.




Lass uns über euer aktuelles Werk „Triumph & Glory“ sprechen. Wie kam die Idee zum Ttitel?


JB kam damit daher. Ich glaube der Titel existierte bereits als sie „Hammer Of The North“ schrieben, aber der Song war einfach nicht gut genug, weshalb er es nicht auf das Album schaffte. Sie haben aber den Titel behalten und einen neuen Song dazu geschrieben. Vielleicht dachte er einfach, dass es jetzt an der Zeit sei.


Es ist das zweite Album mit dir an den Drums. Wo siehst du denn die Unterschiede im Vergleich zu „The Hunt“?


Ich denke das Album kommt etwas schneller zum Punkt. Beides sind starke Alben und ich mag sie gleichermaßen, aber dieses fühlt sich majestätischer an – du kannst etwas MANOWAR darin fühlen. (lacht)


Hast du denn Lieblingssongs?


Ja, ich denke „On Hooves Of Gold“ ist mein Liebling, aber warum kann ich dir gar nicht so genau sagen.


Wie haben die Leute bisher auf das neue Material live reagiert?


Eigentlich sehr gut. Wir haben in UK mit der Tour begonnen und der erste Gig in Manchester war großartig. Die haben schon „Steel Vs. Steel“ zum Singen begonnen, also spielten wir den Song spontan. Sie schreien jetzt schon nach den neue Songs, also sieht es so aus als würden sie das neue Album bereits lieben.


Denkst du, dass der Sound des Albums auf ganz natürlichem Wege entstanden ist? Für mich wirkt es auch wie ein kleiner Schritt zurück...


Ja, es war ein ganz natürlicher Prozess. Es ist vorher immer schwer zu sagen, was daraus wird. Du hast immer einen Plan wenn du an neuen Songs arbeitest. Du sagt: „versuchen wir das oder das“, aber was normalerweise passiert ist ein „was dabei rauskommt, kommt dabei raus“ Ding. Auch wenn du einen Plan hast, kannst du nicht kontrollieren was dich plötzlich inspiriert und du kannst dann nicht mehr aussuchen, was du schreibst.




Ihr habt viele Auftritte absolviert in letzter Zeit und „The Hunt“ ist auch noch nicht sonderlich alt. Wann hattet ihr eigentlich Zeit die Songs zu schreiben?


Eigentlich kurz bevor wir mit den Aufnahmen begannen. Ich denke es ging Anfang September los, also gleich nach der Festival-Saison. JB hat sein Zeug einfach zu Hause aufgenommen und mir die Files geschickt, damit ich meine Parts ausarbeiten konnte und so weiter. Da wir nicht in derselben Stadt leben, müssen wir uns das Zeug hin und her schicken.


Ich habt in Deutschland und auch hier in Österreich das beste Chart-Ergebnis eurer Karriere erreicht. Wie habt ihr reagiert, als ihr davon erfahren habt?


Das ist natürlich großartig. Es fühlt sich cool an zur Abwechslung mal in einer Band zu sein, die einen Aufwärtstrend hat. (lacht)
Ich war in Bands, die an irgendeinem Punkt fest steckten und in den Zeiten wo Verkaufszahlen immer weiter zurückgehen, ist es ein wirklich tolles Gefühl. Außerdem haben Nuclear Blast wirklich tolle Arbeit bei der Promotion geleistet.


Was kannst du mir noch zum Artwork sagen?


Ich kann mich nicht mehr an den Namen von dem Typen erinnern. (Ánm.d.Red.: Anthony Robertson) Aber er hat eine tolle Arbeit geleistet. Wir haben ihm einfach gesagt, was wir uns ungefähr vorstellen und er kam dann mit so einem Schwarz-Weiß Sketch vom Artwork daher und es sah schon ziemlich ähnlich aus wie das inale. Wir haben dann einfach noch gesagt, er soll weiter machen und du siehst ja was dabei raus gekommen ist – es passt auch super zur Musik.


Weißt du warum GRAND MAGUS das Conan-Theme als Intro auf der Bühne verwenden
?

Eigentlich nicht, das hat schon angefangen bevor ich der Band beigetreten bin. (lacht)
Ich weiß nur, dass JB den Film wirklich mag und es ist ein majestätisches Stück Musik, das gut zu uns passt.




Was können wir denn heute Abend erwarten?


A fully loaded Heavy Metal Show! Wir spielen drei neue Songs und viele Klassiker. Aber es wird immer schwerer all diese tollen Songs in eine Setlist zu bringen, aber ihr werdet Spaß haben.


Was tut sich denn bei den SPIRITUAL BEGGARS?


Nicht viel momentan. Ich meine Michael (Amott) hat mit ARCH ENEMY genug zu tun und die anderen sind auch in verschiedenen weiteren Bands tätig. Aber ein paar Japan-Gigs sind noch geplant.


Was denkst du, wann es ein neues Album geben kann?


Es ist schwer zu sagen, da ARCH ENEMY gerade voll durchstarten und einige Tourneen und Festivals geplant haben. Also werden sie für die nächsten zwei Jahre oder so schwer beschäftigt sein. Aber normalerweise treffen sich Michael und ich zum Jammen zwischen den Tourneen und sammeln Ideen. Man weiß also nie was passiert.




Hat du eine interessante Tourstory für uns?


Mir wurde die Frage heute schon gestellt und mir ist nichts eingefallen. Ich meine, wir werden älter und wir machen nicht mehr so viel Party wie früher. Wir spielen einfach die Gigs, haben Spaß an der Musik. Ich meine, ich werde älter und trinke nichts mehr. Wir versuchen die beste Show die uns möglich ist zu liefern und wollen nicht riskieren schlecht zu spielen, weil wir am Vorabend wegen einer Aftershow-Party zu lange auf bleiben oder solche Sachen. Das passierte schon, als ich jünger war.
Ich kann euch auch noch erzählen, warum ich nichts mehr trinke. Ich war eine Zeit lang mit der Band SHINING auf Tour. Wir haben in Europa die Hälfte der Shows durch gehabt und einiges Getrunken und geraucht. Da bekam ich eine Art Anfall auf der Bühne, so dass sich meine Hände und der ganze Körper verkrampften. Also fiel ich von meinem Drum-Stuhl nach gut drei Songs und musste ins Krankenhaus. Ich konnte an diesem Abend nicht mehr sprechen – es war ziemlich erschreckend. Danach dachte ich, ich trinke mal ein Monat nichts und hab nie wieder angefangen. Jetzt geht es nur mehr um die Musik.

Hey, nice to meet you again. How is the tour going on and how are you doing at the moment?


Everythings fine, thank you.


How do you come along with the other Bands (AUDREY HORNE, ZODIAC, THE VINTAGE CARAVAN) on this tour?


It´s really good. We are actually all on the same bus – four bands! (laughs)
But it works up really good and i played with the ZODIAC guys with my other band SPIRITUAL BEGGARS before. They are really cool guys, so i don´t have to complain about anything.


Did you already had the chance to check out their performances on this tour?


Yeah, not in its entirety, but is saw a few songs of every band in different locations.


Let´s talk about your new album – “Triumph & Power”. What was the idea of the title?


JB came up with it. I think he already had the title for a song, when they wrote “Hammer Of The North”, but the song didn´t turn out that good, so it didn´t make it on the record. But he kept the title and wrote a new song for this album. Maybe he thought now it´s the time.


It´s the second record with you on drums. Where do you see the differences in comparison to “The Hunt”?


I think this album is a little bit more straight to the point. Both albums are very good, i like them both, but this one is also more majestic – you can feel a little bit of MANOWAR in it. (laughs).


Do you have favourites on it?


Yeah, i think “On Hooves Of Gold” is my favourite, but i can´t tell you exactly why.


How did the people react on the new material when you played it live?


Really good actually. We started the tour in the UK and the first gig in Manchester was awesome. They allready started singing “Steel Vs. Steel”, so we started playing it spontaneously. People already are shouting for the new songs. So it seems they love our new record. It´s a good sign.


Do you think it was a natural way how this album turned out? For me it also seems like a little step back to the old sound...


Yes, it was a natural progression. It´s always hard to say how it turnes out. You always have a plan when you start working on new songs. You say: “Let’s try this or do this”, but what usually happens is a “what comes out, comes out” thing. Even if you plan something, you will get some inspirations and you can´t really choose what you gonna write.


You did many gigs in de past months and the release of “The Hunt” is not really long ago. So when did you have time to write the new songs?


Actually right before we started recording. I think we started the songwriting at the 1st of September, so pretty much after the festival-season. JB recorded his stuff simply at home and sent me files, so i could try my parts and so on. We don´t live in the same town, so we have to send stuff back and forth.


You scored in Germany and also here in Austria the best Chart-Position in your career. How did you react as you heard about it and how do you feel now with this?


I mean that’s great. It´s really cool to be in a band that´s on the way up, for a change. (laughs). I was in bands before that stuck on a point and in these times, when you see record-sellings going down and down everywhere, it´s a really good feeling. And of course Nuclear Blast did a really good job with promoting it.


You choose again Nico Elgstrand as your producer, so it seems you are satisfied with his sound... how is it to work with him?


Yeah, it works out really good and we are all friends with him. If you have a famous producer, it´s not like you send him your stuff and get it back how it should sound. You have to work with him and we already know him well and he knows us too, so it´s easy. Something like a “back and forth”. We are very involved in the process.


What can you tell me about the artwork?


I can´t remember the guy’s name who did it. (Anthony Robertson). But he did a great job and we are very satisfied. We just told him what we want and he came with a black and white sketch which already looked quite similar to the final album-artwork. We told him that he can go on and you see what happened – it fits really good to the music.



Do you know how why GRAND MAGUS started using the Conan-Theme as a Intro on the stage?


Actually not, they started doing it before i joined the band. (laughs) I know JB really likes the movie and it´s a majestic piece of music that fits to us.


What can we expect tonight?


A fully loaded Heavy Metal Show. We will play three new songs and a lot of classics. It´s getting harder and harder to get all songs in a setlist, but you will have fun.


What´s going on in the SPIRITUAL BEGGARS?


Not very much at the moment. I mean Michael (Amott) have a lot to do with ARCH ENEMY at the moment and the other guys are in different bands to. But we will do a few gigs in Japan after this tour.


What do you think when can we expect a new album?


It´s hard to say, because ARCH ENEMY is starting over again and will do a big tour and festivals. They will be busy for the next two years or so. But usually Michael and me will meet for jamming around between the tours and collecting ideas. So you never know what will happen.


Do you maybe have a funny or ugly tour story?


I actually got this question today and i didn´t remember anything. I mean we are getting older we are not partying that much like we used to be.
Just playing the gigs and having fun with the music. I mean i am older and i am not drinking anymore. There is no partying after the shows. We try to make the best show we can and not getting drunk. We don´t want to risk to play a bad show cause you stayed up to long for a aftershow-party or something like that. Like we used to when i was younger.

But i can tell you why i was stopped drinking on tour. I was with the band SHINING on tour for a while. We played shows in Europe and halfway from the tour of drinking and smoking weed and stuff. So i got a seizure on stage. My hands and my whole body starting crumping up. I felt from the drum stool after three songs and i had to go to the hospital. I couldn´t speak at that evening – it was pretty scary. After that i thought i will have a month of drinking – i never started again. Now it´s all about the music.
