Aus dem düsteren und Kalten Norden Finnlands kommen die Herren M. Myston und John Myston und das kann man auf dem neuesten Output der MYSTONS nicht nur hören, sondern auch spüren. Die düsteren Klänge von "Black Matter" bieten dichte Atmosphäre, zeigen aber auch, dass das nordische Duo auch rocken kann!
Wir sprachen mit Bandboss M. Myston über die Platte:


Hi! Was tut sich zur Zeit bei den MYSTONS?


Wir haben gerade am 14. Februar unser viertes Album "Black Matter" herausgebracht und nun machen wir eine Art Frühlingstournee mit 21 Shows in unserem Heimatland Finnland. Nächsten Oktober planen wir dann, das restliche Europa zu bespielen.




Könnt ihr euch mal kurz vorstellen und uns die Geschichte eurer Gründung erzählen?


Wir sind ein Finnisches Heavy Rock-Duo namens MYSTONS, haben die Band 2007 in Turku, Finnland, gegründet mit Einflüssen des Stoner Rock, Doom Metal, Alternative Rock und Vintage Rock. Unsere Band besteht aus M Myston (Vocals, Gitarre) und John Myston (Drums, Backing Vocals).


Wie seid ihr zu eurem Bandnamen gekommen?


Der Bandname entstand auf einer Afterparty. Als unser erster Drummer Jay Myston überlegte, bestand ich darauf, dass der Name kurz und mystisch sein sollte. Er rief dann MYSTONS und es war sofort entschieden.


Ich möchte euch auch zu eurem großartigen neuen Album "Black Matter" gratulieren - was kannst du mir über den Entstehungsprozess erzählen?


Unser Lineup hat 2012 gewechselt und als unser neuer Drummer John Myston mit an Bord kam, haben wir sofort begonnen, an dem neuen Album zu arbeiten. Die Songs schrieben wir in einer winzigen Hütte irgendwo im nirgendwo am finnischen Land. Die schwarze Dunkelheit umfing unsere Hütte dort wie ein mystischer Nebel und beeinflusste das Resultat unserer Songs und führte uns zu dem Albumtitel "Black Matter".
Wir haben auch lange überlegt, wer das Album produzieren soll und sind dann auf Hiili Hiilesmaa (AMORPHIS, APOCALYPTICA, HIM, THE 69 EYES, MOONSPELL) gekommen, der uns als die beste Wahl für den Job erschien. Er hat uns wirklich dazu gebracht, hart an den Songs und Arrangements zu arbeiten. Wir haben die Songs auch wirklich gut geprobt, bevor wir ins Studio gingen, darum dauerte es nur 12 Tage um das ganze Album aufzunehmen. Also war das Ergebnis sehr live orientiert, intensiv und primitiv.


Was wollt ihr mit dem Albumtitel aussagen?


Tja, wie ich vorher schon sagte, er entstand durch die Umgebung des dichten schwarzen Waldes inmitten der Wildniss in der wir lebten und die meisten unserer Songs komponierten. Wie jeder andere Mensch versuche ich glücklich zu sein, aber manchmal gibts es einfach nur etwas Zähes wie Dunkelheit oder eine verwurzelte Schwärze in meinen Gedanken (wie die dunkle Materie im Weltraum), die Menschen überkommt.


Wie würdest du den Sound der MYSTONS für taube Menschen beschreiben?


Tja, man nimmt eine lange Jacke und taucht sie in altes Öl, es fühlt sich schwer und dunkel an, oder?


Ich kenne leider eure früheren Alben nicht, also kannst du mir die Unterschiede zwischen dem neuem Album und den alten aufzeigen?


Das neue Album ist wie ein Gemälde mit fast nur Grauschattierungen. Es hat viele vintage 70s Vibes. Das neue Element darauf ist einfach die harmonische Stimme von John Myston, was den größten Unterschied ausmacht.


Was sind eure Inspirationen die Lyrics betreffend?


Natur, Menschen, die Welt in der wir leben. Das Leben generell, Isolation und die Gefühle, die man damit verbindet.


Wie war es mit dem Produzenten Hiili Hiilesmaa zu arbeiten?


Es war eine wirklich tolle Erfahrung. Unsere Ideen waren synchron und wir alle wollten mit dem Album in die selbe Richtung, darum fühlte sich alles für uns logisch und einfach an. Hiili hat uns dazu gebracht, an den Songs zu arbeiten und zeigte uns noch Punkte an denen wir noch feilen mussten und Lösungen dazu. Er brachte uns dazu unsere musikalischen Kapazitäten voll auszuloten und wir mussten keine Kompromisse eingehen. Es war absolut wert mit ihm zu arbeiten, denn die Vorgängeralben haben wir selbst produziert.


Ich habe gesehen, dass ihr viele Gigs in Finnland und ein paar außerhalb gespielt habt, aber wann dürfen wir MYSTONS im Rest von Europa erwarten?


Wir planen für Oktober 2014 eine Tour. Also falls jemand interessiert daran ist uns zu buchen - kontaktiert uns, wir würden uns glücklich schätzen, in eurer Heimatstadt zu spielen.




Heuert ihr Live-Musiker an oder bleibt ihr ein Duo auf der Bühne?


Was du auf dem Album hörst ist fast das selbe wie man live erwarten kann. Wir sind nur zu zweit. John Myston spielt auch wie auf dem Album das Keyboard live. Manche Leute meinen, dass es viel Drumherum gibt auf dem Album und dass es ziemlich umfangreich klingt, aber es gibt nicht viele Spuren oder ähnliches darauf. Es ist eigentlich unser Live-Sound. Ich verwende verschiedene Effekte und drei Amps auf der Bühne, darum kommt es einfach viel aggressiver, primitiver und intensiver rüber.


Stimmst du dem zu, wenn ihr mit Bands wie HIM, TYPE O NEGATIVE, DANZIG und BLACK SABBATH verglichen werdet?


Yeah, alle diese Bands haben Einfluss auf uns. BLACK SABBATH, DANZIG und TYPE O NEGATIVE haben schon immer zu meinen Lieblingsbands gehört und mir scheint, als wären BLACK SABBATH eine endlose Quelle der Inspiration. Sie haben Metal erfunden und darum sind wir stolz darauf, diesen Weg nachzufolgen.


Und würdet ihr noch andere Bands dieser Liste hinzufügen?


Tja, ALICE IN CHAINS, MONSTER MAGNET, THERAPIE?, PINK FLOYD und THE DOORS haben auch einen wichtigen Einfluss auf uns.


Was steht als nächstes bei den MYSTONS an?


Wir gehen auf Frühlings-Tournee in Finnland und fangen jetzt auch an, an neuen Songs zu arbeiten.

Hey guys, what’s going on in MYSTONS?


We released our fourth album “Black Matter” Feb 14, 2014. Now we’re touring our home country Finland with 21 shows spring tour. Next October we plan to tour Europe.


Can you please introduce yourself and the story of founding the band?


We are a Finnish heavy rock duo MYSTONS, founded 2007 in Turku, Finland with influences from Stoner Rock, Doom Metal, Alternative Rock and Vintage Rock. Our line up is M Myston (vocals, guitar) and John Myston (drums, backing vocals).


How came the idea of the band name?


Band name came at an afterparty. I was insisting from the first drummer Jay Myston that the band name should be short and have something mystic to it. He shouted MYSTONS and that was settled immediately.


Congratulations to your great new record “Black Matter” – what can you tell me about the process of creating this record?


Our line up changed 2012 when new drummer John Myston came aboard and we immediately started working on the new album. The songs were written in a small cabin in the middle of nowhere in the Finnish countryside. The thick black darkness surrounded the cabin like mystic fog and it really affected on the outcome of the songs so thus the name “Black Matter”.
We thought long for the producer for this album and came up with Hiili Hiilesmaa (AMORPHIS, APOCALYPTICA, HIM, THE 69 EYES, MOONSPELL) who proved to be a perfect choice for the job. He really got us working hard with the songs and arrangements. We rehearsed the songs very well before entering the studio so it took only 12 days in the studio to record the whole album. So the outcome came very live oriented, intense and primitive.


What is the title about?


We’ll like previously said, it came from the surroundings of a thick black forrest in the middle of Finnish wilderness where I lived and composed most of the songs. Like every human I try to be happy but there’s just something oily like blackness or like a thick rooted dark vibe in my mind. I can’t really say what it is, but sometimes it feels like the whole world is surrounded with this black matter (like the dark matter in space) which seems to take over people.


How would you describe the sound of MYSTONS for deaf people?


Well you take a long canvas jacket and dip it in waste oil and put it on, it feels heavy and black doesn’t it?


I don´t know your former records yet, so can you please tell me the main differences of your new record in comparison to them?


The new album is like a painting with the most shades of gray in it. It has got the most vintage 70s vibe to it I think. The new element on it is John Mystons vocal harmonies which make the biggest difference.


What are your influences for the lyrics?


Nature, humans, this world that we are living in. Life in general, isolation and the feelings related to it.


How was it to work with Hilli Hiilesmaa as your producer?


It was very good experience. Our thoughts synced straight away and we all were really driving the album towards the exact same direction so it felt very logical and easy. Hiili made us work with the songs and he would point out things that needed something to be done to them and we came up with solutions. He really got us to use our full musical capacities and we didn’t need to compromise on anything. It was definetly worth it as the previous albums we had produced ourselves.


I saw you played many gigs in Finland and a few outside, but when can we expect the MYSTONS to tour the rest of Europe?


We plan a tour in October 2014. If you’re interested in booking us somewhere just contact us, we’d be happy to play in your home town.


Do you hire Live-Musicians or do play just as two-piece on stage?


What you hear on the album is almost exactly what you hear live. There’s just the two of us. John Myston even plays the keyboards heard on the album live. Some people have said that there’s lot of stuff in the new album and it sounds very big but there isn’t many overdubs or anything on it. It’s basically our live sound. I use different effects and 3 amps on stage so live it even comes more to your face, aggressive, primitive and intense.


Would you agree if people compare you with bands like HIM, TYPE O NEGATIVE, DANZIG and BLACK SABBATH?


Yeah, there’s influences from all of those. BLACK SABBATH, DANZIG and TYPE O have always been my favourites and seems like SABBATH is and endless source for inspiration. They invented heavy metal so we are very proud to follow that road.


And would you add some other bands to this list?


We’ll ALICE IN CHAINS, MONSTER MAGNET, THERAPY?, PINK FLOYD and THE DOORS have been important influences too.


What´s next for MYSTONS?


We’re going to finish our spring tour and also start working on the new songs.
