Anlässlich ihrer Tour als Special Guest mit den SPORTFREUNDEN STILLER, hatte ich die Gelegenheit, im Backstagebereich mit dem Bassisten Simon Rix und dem Sänger Ricky Wilson von der britischen Rock Band KAISER CHIEFS zu plaudern. Beide waren sehr nett und gut aufgelegt und haben mir geduldig alle Fragen beantwortet.


Hi! Nett euch hier in Graz zu treffen.
Ich kenne euch seit 2007 – das war eure beste Zeit. Was ist mit den KAISER CHIEFS seit damals passiert?


Simon: Ich denke, für uns war 2009 das großartigste Jahr. Wir hatten großartige Alben wie „Employment“ und „Yours Truly, Angry Mob“ veröffentlicht und hatten mit „Ruby“ auch in Österreich einen großen Hit. Danach machten wir das dritte Album, das uns sehr viel bedeutet hat, aber das etwas ruhiger war. Wir haben intensiv versucht, etwas Interessantes zu machen und wir haben vielleicht dabei ein bisschen auf das Publikum vergessen. Beim vierten Album haben wir dann wieder versucht, den normalen Weg zu gehen und nicht allzu viel Neues zu machen. Und jetzt haben wir uns auf unsere Wurzeln zurück besonnen und ein ähnliches Album gemacht wie die ersten waren. Wir haben nicht so sehr darauf geachtet, was wir selbst wollten, sondern mehr darauf, was den Leuten gefallen könnte. Und es funktioniert für uns und es passt alles.


Ich war bei einem Konzert von euch in Wien 2008 oder 2009. Euer Auftritt hat mir sehr gut gefallen, aber ihr hattet die schlimmste Support-Band die ich jemals erlebt habe. Ich kann mich nicht mehr an den Namen erinnern, aber es waren ein paar junge Leute die auf der Bühne herumgehüpft sind und die Musik hat mir auch nicht gefallen. Wer hat entschieden, diese Band für eure Tour zu nehmen?


Simon: Wir hatten immer verschiedene Leute mit auf diesen Touren. Manchmal haben wir entschieden und manchmal das Management. Manchmal entscheidet auch der Veranstalter. Ich kann mich aber nicht mehr erinnern, welche Band das war.


Ricky: Da waren aber dann sicher nicht wir dafür verantwortlich (lacht). Aber es tut uns leid, dass sie nicht gut waren.




Es gab nach dieser Tour keine Headliner-Tour mehr in Österreich. Warum?


Ricky: Wir hatten die neueren Alben gemacht aber die kamen nicht so gut an. Und wir brauchen einfach ein Publikum um zu spielen, aber das Interesse war nicht mehr so groß. Aber jetzt sind wir wieder dabei, das Publikum in Österreich für uns zu interessieren und auch du kannst uns dabei helfen, indem du über uns schreibst.


Eine Frage noch zu eurem größten Hit „Ruby“ – ihr habt dazu ein geniales Video gemacht und ich mag es sehr. Bitte erzählt mir etwas darüber wie es gemacht wurde. Nur am Computer?


Simon: Ja, da waren viele Computer. Ich kenne mich da nicht so aus, aber es gibt ja viele Filme wie etwa „Star Wars“, wo die Schauspieler nichts wissen, wie der Film aussehen wird, wenn er fertig ist. Aber es war wirklich gewaltig und eine großartige Idee. Das Publikum hat es jedenfalls immer sehr gerne gesehen.


Ricky: Wir konnten uns das vorher gar nicht so vorstellen wie das wird mit den kleinen Gebäuden und den kleinen Menschen. Wir haben nicht gedacht, dass es gut wird, aber es ist sehr gut geworden.


Ich habe gelesen, dass die Band beinahe wegen persönlicher Differenzen zerbrochen wäre. Wann habt ihr euch entschlossen weiterzumachen?


Ricky: Da waren keine Differenzen. Wir wollten eine Band sein und unser Drummer wollte nicht mehr Teil unserer Band sein. Er hat sich entschieden uns zu verlassen, das war alles. Aber es hat uns schon ein bisschen zum Nachdenken gebracht, wie sehr wir das Bandleben mögen und wie sehr wir es mögen CDs aufzunehmen. Wir haben überlegt, wie wichtig das alles für uns ist und wie wichtig das Publikum für uns ist und dann haben wir uns entschieden mit einem neuen Drummer weiterzumachen.


Ihr habt ein neues Album veröffentlicht. Wie lange habt ihr daran gearbeitet?


Simon: Wir haben elf Monate daran gearbeitet. Wir haben mit dem neuen Drummer zu arbeiten begonnen, wir hatten Proben und haben Konzerte und Festivals gespielt. Und dazwischen haben wir uns immer Zeit genommen an neuen Songs zu schreiben. Wir haben auch einige Gigs in Amerika gespielt. Im September flogen wir dann nach Atlanta in Georgia, dort haben wir sechs Wochen lang das neue Album aufgenommen und gemixed und Mitte November war alles fertig. Es war harte Arbeit.


Ist Songwriting nur Arbeit eines Teils der Band oder arbeiten alle daran?


Ricky: Wir arbeiten immer zusammen und wir haben die besten Ideen wenn wir gemeinsam arbeiten. Wir alles sind die KAISER CHIEFS und daran sind alle beteiligt.


Was war die grundlegende Idee beim neuen Album?


Ricky: Wir wollten etwas machen, wodurch wir unsere Jobs behalten können. Wir möchten durch die Welt touren. Aber natürlich wollten wir auch tolle Songs schreiben, die von den Fans gemocht werden und mit denen wir eine Verbindung zu ihnen aufbauen können.


Simon: Wir wollen wieder dorthin kommen wo wir 2007 waren. Wenn unsere Songs im Radio gespielt werden, dann ist das ein schönes Gefühl. Aber in erster Linie wollten wir ein Album produzieren, auf das wir stolz sein können und mit dem wir erfolgreich sein können und das auf der ganzen Welt gemocht wird.


Wie sehr inspiriert eure Heimat und speziell Leeds eure Musik?


Ricky: Es ist fast unmöglich sich von dem Ort zu distanzieren, wo man aufgewachsen ist. Er hat uns geformt und wir haben einen großen Teil unseres Lebens dort verbracht. Die Heimat ist ein sehr wichtiger Teil und wo immer du in der Welt auch bist, es kann wundervoll sein aber die hauptsächliche Inspiration kommt aus den Dingen, die es in der Heimat gibt. Wir tragen immer UK und Leeds mit uns. Das lässt sich nicht trennen.


Wer hatte die Idee zu dieser Tour mit den SPORTFREUNDEN STILLER?


Ricky: Wir wurden gefragt und haben dieses Angebot gerne angenommen. Es waren nicht viele Konzerte für uns geplant zu dieser Zeit und so ist es eine gute Chance für uns, wieder live zu spielen. Es kommt nicht oft vor, dass bei Konzerten Deutscher Bands eine Britische Band gefragt wird, ob sie Support sein möchten. Aber wir wollten ohnehin wieder in Deutschland und Österreich spielen und es macht uns große Freude.


Ich denke, das ist auch eine große Chance für euer Comeback?


Ricky: Das war auch der Grund warum wir uns dafür entschieden haben. Wir möchten wieder vor viel Publikum spielen.




Einige letzte Worte für eure Fans?


Ricky: Leider konnten wir nicht anders als Supportband nach Österreich zurückkommen. Aber wir bitten euch um eure Unterstützung durch den Kauf von unseren CDs, dann werden wir vielleicht bald wieder als Headliner nach Österreich zurückkommen. Ladet uns einfach nur ein und kommt zu unseren Shows.


Simon: Wir werden auf einigen Festivals spielen und hoffentlich werden viele von euch bei unseren Auftritten dabei sein.

On the occasion of their tour as special guest with the SPORTFREUNDE STILLER I had the opportunity to talk in the backstage area with bassist Simon Rix and singer Ricky Wilson from the British Rock band KAISER CHIEFS. Both were very nice and in a good mood and have patiently answered all my questions.

I like your band and your music very much and so I am here on this evening and I am very happy to be able to talk with you.

I know you since 2007 – this was your greatest time. What happened with KAISER CHIEFS since then?


Simon: I think for us, 2009 was the greatest year. We had released great albums such as "Employment" and "Yours Truly, Angry Mob" and had with "Ruby" also in Austria a big hit. We then made the third album, which has meant a lot to us, but it was a little quieter. We have tried hard to make something interesting, and maybe we have forgotten a bit to the audience. At the fourth album, we then tried again to go the normal way and not to make too much new stuff. And now we have returned to our roots and made a similar album ​​like the first ones. We have not so much paid attention to what we even wanted, but more on what could please the people. And it works for us and it all fits.


I was on a concert from you in Vienna. I think this was 2008 or 2009. I liked your gig very much but you had the most horrible support-band I have ever seen. I don´t remember the name, but this were young people, bouncing on stage and the music was also not good. Who decided, to take this band for your tour?


Simon: We always had different people with us on these tours. Sometimes we have decided and sometimes our management. Sometimes the organizer decided. But I cannot remember which band this was.


Ricky: But then we were not responsible for them (laughs). But we are sorry that they were not good.


There were no headliner-tours after this in Austria. Why?


Ricky: We had made ​​the newer albums but they not go down well. And we just need an audience to play, but the interest was not so big. But now we are back to interest the audience in Austria for us and you can help us by writing about us.


One question about your greatest hit “Ruby” – you made a genius video and I like it very much. Please tell me about the making of? Only on Computer?


Simon: Yes, there were many computers. I don´t know so many about this, but there are so many movies like for example "Star Wars" where the actors do not know, how the movie will look like when it is finished. But it was really huge and a great idea. The audience has certainly always very much appreciated it.


Ricky: We were not able previously to imagine how this is, with the small buildings and small people. We did not think that it is good, but it has become very well.


I read, that the band was nearly broken because of personal differences. When have you decided to continue?


Ricky: There were no differences. We wanted to be a band and our drummer wanted not to be longer part of our band. He has decided to leave us, that was all. But it has brought us quite a bit to think about how much we like the band life, and how much we like to record CDs. We thought about, how important all this is for us, and how important is the audience for us, and then we decided to go on with a new drummer.


You made a new album. How long did you work on it?


Simon: We have worked eleven months on it. We have started to work with the new drummer, we had rehearsals and have played concerts and festivals. And in between we have always taken the time to write new songs. We played also some gigs in America. In September, we went to Atlanta, Georgia, where we had six weeks recorded and mixed the new album, and in mid-November was all finished. It was hard work.


Is songwriting only work of a part of the band or from all?


Ricky: We always work together and we have the best ideas when we work together. We all are the KAISER CHIEFS and so there are all involved.


What was the basic idea from the new album?


Ricky: We wanted to do something, with that we can keep our jobs. We want to tour all over the world. But of course, we also wanted to write great songs that are liked by the fans and with whom we can connect to them.


Simon: We want to come back to where we were in 2007. If our songs are played on the radio, that's a nice feeling. But first and foremost we wanted to produce an album, of which we can be proud of and with which we can be successful, and that is liked all over the world.


How much inspires your home country and especially Leeds your music?


Ricky: It's almost impossible to disassociate yourselves from the place where you grew up. He has shaped us and we have spent a great part of our lives there. The home is a very important part and wherever you are in the world, it can be wonderful but the main inspiration comes from the things that exist in the home. We always wear UK and Leeds with us. That cannot be separated.


Who had the idea for this tour with SPORTFREUNDE STILLER?


Ricky: We have been asked and have gladly accepted this offer. There were not many concerts planned for us at this time and so it was a good opportunity for us to play live again. It's not often that for concerts of German bands a British band will be asked if they wish to support them. But we wanted anyway play again in Germany and Austria and it is a great pleasure for us.


I think, this is a big chance for you for a comeback.


Ricky: That was also the reason why we have decided. We want to play in front of a large audience again.


Some last words to your fans?


Ricky: Sorry we could not come back to Austria otherwise as a supportband. But we ask you for your support through the buying of our CDs, then perhaps we will soon come back as a headliner to Austria. Just invite us and come to our shows.


Simon: We will play some festivals and hopefully many of you will be at our shows.
