Was haben LACUNA COIL mit italienischen Horrorfilmen zu tun? Andrea Ferro von den italienischen Gothic-Rockern stand uns Rede und Antwort zum neuen Album “Broken Crown Halo”, ihrer Inspiration dazu, dem Tourleben und einigen anderen Fragen. Bis Mitte Mai sind sie noch auf Tour in Übersee und dann geht es wieder zurück nach Europa in den Festivalsommer und im Herbst dürfen wir uns auf eine Tour von ihnen freuen.

Zu Beginn erst einmal, hallo und danke, dass du dir Zeit genommen hast für ein Interview.
In letzter Zeit ist viel passiert bei euch. Habt ihr bereits eine Nachbesetzung für Cristiano Migliore an der Gitarre und für Cristiano Mozzati an den Drums?


Wir haben uns dazu entschieden mit einer Gitarre weiterzumachen anstelle von zwei, so ist Maus jetzt unser einziger Gitarrist und wir haben unseren lieben Freund und Ex-Drumtechniker Ryan Folden an den Drums. Er ist in der Crew seit sechs Jahren und spielt mit uns seit mittlerweile zwei Jahren.




Ihr habt veröffentlicht, dass die Beiden aus familiären Gründen ausgestiegen sind, weil sie mehr Zeit für sich selbst und ihre Familien haben wollen. Wie managed ihr die Band und das Tourleben mit eurem persönlichen Leben? Ist es schwer das eine vom anderen zu trennen?


Sie wollten ihren Lifestyle ändern und nicht mehr auf Tour gehen. Sie lieben nach wie vor die Musik und wir sind noch immer Freunde. Nach all den Jahren zusammen kann ich nichts dazu sagen, wir verstehen sie total und akzeptieren ihre Entscheidung ohne schlechte Gefühle. Generell ist das Tourleben nichts für jedermann und es gibt Zeiten, da kann es wirklich hart sein. Man braucht dazu dieses spezielle Feuer in einem selbst, das einen antreibt Musik zu schreiben und rund um die Welt zu spielen. Man braucht auch Menschen um sich, mit einem hohen Level an Verständnis und Geduld.


Am 28.03.2014 wurde euer neues Album “Broken Crown Halo” veröffentlicht. Nur nebenbei, fantastische Arbeit, ich konnte es ja bereits anhören. Was ist euch wichtiger, die Statements in den Songs, oder die Liebe zur Musik?


Danke, ich freue mich, dass du es magst. Beide sind sehr wichtige Aspekte und wir versuchen ihnen die gleiche Wichtigkeit zu geben. Wahrscheinlich ist es schwieriger interessante starke Texte zu schreiben.




Woher kommt die Idee, italienische Horrorfilme als Inspiration für “Broken Crown Halo” zu verwenden?


Wir sind mit diesen Filmen aufgewachsen und haben realisiert wie stark deren Einfluss in unsere Musik ist. In Beidem - dem Sound und auch dem Visuellen. Es ist ein einzigartiger Stil von Horror, genauso wie wir eine einzigartige Band sind.


Möchtet ihr irgendwann einmal den Soundtrack zu einem Horrorfilm schreiben?


Das ist einer unserer größten Träume! Düstere Filme waren immer schon sehr inspirierend für uns.


Wie entstehen eure Songs? Laut meinen Informationen bist du, Andrea, der Songwriter. Wenn du ein Lied schreibst, was kommt zuerst, der Text oder die Musik? Und inwieweit sind die anderen Bandmitglieder ins Songwriting involviert?


Marco (am Bass) ist der Hauptsongwriter für die Musik, ich und Cristina achten auf die Texte und die Melodien für den Gesang. Maus (an der Gitarre) macht seinen Beitrag an der Leadgitarre und den Riffs. Wahrscheinlich mehr im nächsten Album.


Gibt es noch etwas, das du noch zum neuen Album sagen möchtest?


“Broken Crown Halo” ist ein Album mit guten Vielfalt an Songs, die unseren traditionellen Dark Sound mit modernen kraftvollen Songs vermischt und aber auch atmosphärischen Melodien. Hört hinein und wenn ihr es mögt unterstützt die Band.


Ihr seid derzeit auf Tour in den United States und dann geht es nach Mexiko und Brasilien. Sind dieses Jahr auch Events in Europa geplant?


Klar, wir werden auf einigen Sommerfestivals spielen und im Herbst machen wir eine Europatour.


Wo ward ihr noch nicht, würdet aber gerne noch hin?


Als Kontinent fehlt uns denke ich nur noch Afrika. Wir möchten auch nach China, Hawaii, Alaska und Neuseeland. Überall wo wir noch nicht waren, ist für uns interessant.




Weil wir gerade über Auftritte sprechen, werdet ihr noch immer nervös vor Auftritten?


Ja natürlich, wir sind Menschen! Offensichtlich wissen wir wie wir unseren Job zu machen haben, aber da sollten immer Emotionen dabei sein, ansonsten wären wir Roboter.


Wie bereitet ihr euch auf die Gigs vor? Was macht ihr in der letzten Stunde bevor ihr auf die Bühne geht?


Normalerweise fangen wir eine Stunde bevor es auf die Bühne geht damit an uns fertig zu machen und ich und Cristina haben unser routinemäßiges Warm up für die Stimmen. Generell versuchen wir so viel wie möglich zu schlafen und mit einigen kleinen Übungen in Form zu bleiben. Der Schlüssel um solche lange Touren zu überleben ist gesund zu bleiben und möglichst zu vermeiden zu viel zu trinken, rauchen, etc.


Was macht euch am meisten Spaß? Auftritte, Proben oder Studioarbeit?


Das sind völlig verschiedene Aspekte. Live zu spielen ist Spaß, Studio kann langweilig sein, aber es ist toll wenn du das Ergebnis hörst, Proben sind ein notwendiges Übel.

First of all, hello und thanks for taking time for an interview.
A lot has happened to you lately. Is there already a refilling of Cristiano Migliore on guitar, of for Cristiano Mozzati on drums?


We have decided to go on with one guitar instead of two, so Maus is now the one and only guitar player and we have our dear friend and ex drum tech Ryan Folden on drum. He has been in out camp since six years and is playing with us since almost two now.


You released that the two have separated for familiy reasons, because they want to have more time for themselves and their families. How do you manage the band and touring life with your personal life? Is it difficult to separate one to the other?


They wanted to change their lifestyle and not being on tour anymore, the still love music and we’re still friends. After all these years together there’s nothing I can say, we totally unterstand them and accept their decision with no bad feelings at all. In general touring life is not for everybody and at times it can be really hard. You need to still have that spezial fire in you, that drives you to write and play music around the world. You also need pople with a good level of understanding and patience around you.


On 28.03.2014 the new Album “Broken Crown Halo” is published. By the way, a fantastic work, I was able to listen already. What’s more important to you, the statement in the songs, or the love to the music?


Thanx, I’m glad you like it. They bot very important aspekts and we try to give ‘em the same importance. Probably write interesting strong lyrics is more difficult.


Where comes the idea to use Italian horror films as inspiration to “Broken Crown Halo”?


We grow up with those movies and we just realise how much they actually appeal to out music both in the sounds aswell as in the visual. It’s a unique style of horror just as much as we are a unique kind of band.


Would you like to once actually write the soundtrack for a horror movie?


That is one of out biggest dreams! Dark movies has always been very inspiring for us.


How arise your songs? According to my information, Andrea is your songwriter. When you write a song, what’s first text or music? And to what extend are the other band members involved in the songwriting?


Marco (bass player) is the main songwriter for the music, me and Cristina take care of the lyrics and the vocal melodies. Maus (guitar player) also contribute with lead guitars and riffs, probably even more on the next album.


Is there anything you want like to say even more to the new album?



“Broken Crown Halo” it’s an album with a good variety of songs, mixing our more traditional dark sound with modern powerful songs, but also atmospherical melodics ones. Give it a listen and if you like it support the band.


You’re currently on tour in the United States and then you go to Mexico and Brazil. Are there also planned events in Europe this year?


Sure, we will play some of the summer festivals and in the fall we will be touring in europe.


Where you don’t already was, but would like to appear once?


As a continent I think we only miss Afrika, we would also like to play China, Haway, Alaska and New Zealand. Everywhere we haven’t been it’s kinda interesting.


Because we are talking about the perfomances. Are you still sometimes get nervous before performances?


Yeah sure, we’re humans! Obviously we know how to do our job, but there has to bei some Emotion, otherwise we would be robots.


How do you prepare yourself for the gigs? What are you doing the last hour before going on stage?


Usually ohne hour before stage we start to get ready and me and Cristina have a warm up routine for vocals. In general we try to sleep as much as we can and stay in shape with some little exercise. To survive on long tours, it’s key to stay healthy and avoid as much as possible drinking, smoking, etc.


And what makes you the most fun? Performances, rehearsals or studio work?


Those are all different aspects, play live is fun, studio can be boring, but it’s great once you hear the result, rehearsal is a necessary evil.
