Anlässlich ihres Tourstops in Graz hatte ich die Gelegenheit, mich mit dem Sänger Dolk der Norwegischen Band KAMPFAR zu unterhalten. Das Gespräch fand im Tourbus vor dem Explosiv statt und für mich war es eine Premiere, einmal in einem solchen Bus zu sitzen!

Nett dich wiederzusehen! Ich war am Kings of Black Metal und da habe ich euch auch gesehen. Wie hat euch dieses Festival gefallen?


Für uns ist es immer gut, live zu spielen. Das Festival selbst ist relativ groß, aber daneben ist es toll für uns, dort auf der Bühne zu stehen – das ist genug Lohn für uns und wir hatten eine sehr gute Zeit dort.




Es waren viele Leute bei eurem Auftritt, aber für mich war das Festival fast etwas zu lange. Ich war bereits bei der ersten Band und nach BAPTISM habe ich den Konzertabend abgebrochen.


Das ist verständlich.


Wie gerne spielt ihr live?


Ich mag besonders das grundlegende Wesen des Live-Spielens. Es ist das, wofür wir eine Band sind. Deshalb mag ich auch Touren wie diese so gerne. Wir könnten es uns auch viel leichter machen, wenn wir nur zu den großen Festivals fahren würden, aber das wollen wir nicht. Wir wollen beides haben. Touren wie diese sind genauso wichtig für uns wie alles andere und wir sind wie eine richtige Familie wenn wir unterwegs sind. Wir spielen auch gerne in kleinen Clubs wie diesem. Es ist auch sehr wichtig und auch sehr cool. Wir mögen es!


Wie zufrieden seid ihr mit der aktuellen Tour?


Ich bin bisher sehr zufrieden. Es gab natürlich Ups and Downs – wie immer, aber generell gab es so großartige Erlebnisse auf dieser Tour. Wenn ich mich an Paris erinnere, das war ein absolutes Highlight. Da bekommst du die Bestätigung für alles was du machst. Wenn das Publikum bei den Gitarrenriffs mitsingt usw. dann weißt du wieder, wie wichtig das alles für viele Leute ist. Aber insgesamt gesehen war die Tour sehr gut für uns.


Habt ihr die anderen Bands schon vor der Tour gekannt?


Ja, wir haben mit VELNIAS vor ein paar Jahren schon eine Tour gemacht. Damals waren wir auch in Graz. Deshalb haben wir sie eingeladen, mit uns diese Tour zu machen. ISKALD war auch schon einmal mit uns auf Tour und sie sind beim gleichen Label wie wir. So war es eine natürliche Sache, dass uns das Label gemeinsam auf Tour schicken wollte, aber wir kennen die Jungs, es ist eine gute Band und so haben wir gesagt: „He Jungs, wir machen das zusammen“. Und was HATE betrifft ist es so, dass wir uns kennen, aber sie machen nicht das Gleiche wie wir. Aber wir hatten die Idee, dass das Tour-Package etwas unterschiedlich sein sollte. Es ist sicher interessanter, vier unterschiedliche Bands zu sehen, als vier Bands, die die gleiche Musik machen. Das war die eigentliche Idee und glücklicherweise sind wir hier.

Ich habe HATE noch nie gesehen und am Kings of Black Metal haben sie einfach viel zu spät gespielt.


Das war ein bisschen ein Durcheinander. Wir hatten den Vertrag mit dem Kings of Black Metal schon lange unterschrieben und erst danach kam die Idee mit der Tour. So haben die anderen drei Bands umsonst dort gespielt. ISKALD und VELNIAS waren an diesem Tag als erste dran und HATE als letzte Band. Aber es war okay und es waren noch ziemlich viele Leute da, als sie die Bühne betraten und es war eine gute Sache für sie. HATE ist wirklich eine sehr gute Band und wir haben nach so einer Band gesucht, weil wir bei so vielen Touren waren und wir waren immer die Besten, und wir haben nach einer Band wie HATE gesucht, die uns technisch in den Hintern tritt, sodass wir uns wirklich bemühen mussten, neben ihnen zu bestehen. Das war eine gute Sache für uns.


Ihr habt kürzlich eine neue CD veröffentlicht. Wie lange habt ihr daran gearbeitet?

Wir haben ein Jahr daran gearbeitet. Das war das erste Mal in der Geschichte von KAMPFAR, dass wir zu beinahe allem „Nein“ gesagt haben. Letztes Jahr hatten wir Anfragen für 13 Sommer-Festivals, aber wir haben beinahe alle abgelehnt. Wir waren nur auf einem Festival, dem Hellfest, weil wir mit dem Veranstalter befreundet sind. Wir wollten uns auf die Arbeit an unserem neuen Album konzentrieren und diese Arbeit war sehr intensiv, aber jetzt können wir sagen, dass es sich gelohnt hat. Wir leben in drei unterschiedlichen Städten. Der Gitarrist und der Drummer leben in Bergen und wir haben alles dort für die Pre-Productions. Wir haben dort ein privates Studio, deshalb bin ich letztes Jahr 25 Mal nach Bergen geflogen. Ich lebe in einer kleinen Stadt namens Larvik, aber mit dem Flugzeug waren es nur 15 Minuten.


Wie waren die Reaktionen auf „Djevelmakt“?


Sie waren überwältigend! Wenn wir bisher eine CD veröffentlicht haben, dann war es das, was unsere Arbeit war – Alben zu machen. Wir haben bisher immer die Links zu Reviews in Facebook veröffentlicht, aber dieses Mal konnten wir es nicht machen, weil jeden Tag ein gutes Review herein kam. Wir haben sie dann in einem eigenen Register abgespeichert als 50 beisammen waren, eine Woche später waren es 80 und dann 100. Es war eine große Überraschung für uns und wir hätten uns das nie erwartet. Es war eine gute Reaktion auf die viele Arbeit, die wir uns damit gemacht haben.




Ist Songwriting bei euch Teamwork oder arbeitet nur ein Teil der Band daran?


Das ist definitiv Teamwork. Alle arbeiten daran, aber wir können nicht bestreiten, dass wir einen neuen Gitarristen haben, der sehr viele Ideen eingebracht hat. Speziell er und ich haben sehr eng zusammen gearbeitet. Das war wirklich sehr gut für uns. KAMPFAR ist auf jeden Fall eine Band, wo alle zusammen arbeiten.


Wie wichtig ist Norwegen für euch und eure Musik?


Ich denke, es ist immer sehr wichtig für mich. Jedes Land hat seine Besonderheiten. In Norwegen haben sich viele Geschichten über Generationen erhalten. Als ich noch ein Kind war, hat mir meine Großmutter all die alten Geschichten erzählt über seltsame Kreaturen in den Wäldern usw. und ich war sehr fasziniert davon. Und dieser Geist ist noch immer in mir und bringt mich dazu, viel über die Geschichte Norwegens zu lesen. Jedes KAMPFAR-Album hat teilweise historische Bezüge. Beim neuen Album haben wir aber mehr Augenmerk auf die heutige Zeit gelegt, das unterscheidet es von den früheren Alben.




Was sind eure Pläne für die Zukunft?


Das ist eine sehr schwierige Frage. Wir sind derzeit unterwegs und es gefällt uns. Aber ich kann es wirklich nicht sagen. Vor dieser Tour hatten wir zwei Angebote für Touren in den USA, aber wir wissen noch nicht genau was wir machen werden. Wir bestimmen gerne selbst unseren Weg. Jetzt sind wir hier und alles Weitere wird sich noch herausstellen.


Du bist seit dem Beginn der Band vor fast 20 Jahren dabei. Was hat sich für dich in dieser Zeit verändert?


Es hat sich sehr viel verändert und das meiste davon ist persönlich – mein persönlicher Weg zu leben. Zwischen 1999 und 2005 war eine sehr wilde Zeit für mich und ich musste mich entscheiden, ob ich so weitermachen will oder mich voll auf KAMPFAR konzentriere. Ich weiß nicht, ob ich noch hier wäre, wenn ich mich nicht für KAMPFAR entschieden hätte. Viele meiner damaligen Freunde sind heute tot – wegen Drogen oder anderem Mist. Und nun bin ich wieder auf einem ganz anderen Weg. Ich habe Kinder und für die muss ich da sein. Das war die größte Veränderung in meinem Leben. Und ich habe meinen Focus jetzt wirklich auf KAMPFAR gerichtet und das ist gut so.


Möchtest du deinen Fans noch etwas sagen?


Wir könnten natürlich nur auf großen Festivals oder so spielen, aber das wollen wir nicht, weil es das ist, was wir sind! Wir spielen sehr gerne in kleinen Clubs, wo wir die Leute treffen. Das ist mehr wert als große Menschenmengen vor uns zu haben. Wir lieben den Kontakt zu den Fans, das ist es was wir machen, das ist KAMPFAR!

On the occasion of their tour stop in Graz, I had the opportunity to talk with the vocalist Dolk from the Norwegian band KAMPFAR. The discussion took place on the tour bus in front of the location named Explosiv and for me it was the first time to sit in such a bus!

I´m very glad to have the possibility, to ask you some questions.

Nice to see you again – I was on Kings of Black Metal and saw you there. How did you like this festival?


For us it is always good to play live. The festival itself is relatively big, but next to it it's great for us to stand there on the stage - that's enough payment for us, and we had a very good time there.


There were many people at your gig, but for me the festival was too long. I was there for the first band and after BAPTISM I had to cancel the concert evening.


That is understandable!


How do you like to play live?


I like the essence of playing live. It is that for which we are a band. That's why I also like tours like this so much. We could also make it for us much easier, if we would go only to the big festivals, but we do not want this. We want to have both. Tours like these are just as important to us as anything else, and we are like a family on the way. We also like to play in small clubs like this. It is also very important and also very cool. We like it!


How satisfied are you with the current tour?


Actually I am very satisfied. Of course there were ups and downs - as always, but in general it was such a great experience on this tour. If I remember to Paris, this was an absolute highlight. Since you get the confirmation for everything you do. If the audience is singing along with the guitar riffs, etc. then you know again, how important this all for many people is. But the tour was in general very good for us.


Did you know the other bands before the tour?


Yes, we have already made a tour with VELNIAS a few years ago. At that time we were also in Graz. That is why we have invited them to do to with us this tour. ISKALD was already on tour with us some years ago, and they are on the same label as we are. So it was a natural thing that our label wanted to send us together on tour, but we know the guys, it's a good band, and so we said, "Hey guys, we do it together." And as for HATE it so that we know each other, but they do not the same as we do. But we had the idea that the tour package should be slightly different. It is certainly more interesting to see four different bands than four bands doing the same music. That was the idea and luckily we are here.


I have not seen HATE until yet, because on Kings of Black Metal they have played too late for me.


That was a little bit confuse. We had signed the contract with the Kings of Black Metal a long time ago, and later came the idea with the tour. So the three other bands have played there for nothing. It was ISKALD and VELNIAS were on that day the first bands and HATE the last band. But it was okay and there were quite a lot of people there, when they entered the stage and it was a good thing for them. HATE is really a very good band and we were looking for a band like HATE, because we made so many tours and we were always the best, and we were looking for a band like HATE, which took us technically in the ass, so we had to really strive to coexist with them. That was a good thing for us.


You released a new CD. How long did you work on this CD?


We have spent a year working on it. That was the first time in the history of KAMPFAR that we have almost said "no" to all. Last year we had 13 requests for summer festivals but we have almost rejected. We only went to one festival, Hellfest, because we are friends with the organizer. We wanted to focus on the work on our new album and this work was very intense, but now we can say that it was worthy. We live in three different cities. The guitarist and the drummer live in Bergen, and we've got everything there for the pre-Productions. There we have a private studio, so I've gone 25 times by plane to Bergen last year. I live in a small town called Larvik, but with the plane it was only 15 minutes.


What were the reactions to “Djevelmakt”?


They were awesome! If we have released a CD before, then it was what our work - to make albums. We have always published the links to reviews at Facebook, but this time we could not do it because every day a good review came. We have then registered in a separate tab, when it were 50, a week later, there were 80 and later 100! It was a big surprise for us and we would never have expected such a reaction. This was a good response to all the work we've done with it.


Is song writing teamwork or only the work of a part of the band?


That's definitely teamwork. All work on it, but we cannot deny that we have a new guitarist, who has brought a lot of ideas. Specifically, he and I have worked very closely together. That was really good for us, KAMPFAR is definitely a band where all work together.


How important is Norway for you and your music?


I think it is always very important for me. Each country has its special. In Norway, many stories have been remained over generations. When I was a child, my grandmother told me all the old stories about strange creatures in the woods, etc. and I was very fascinated of it. And this spirit is still in me and makes me want to read much about the history of Norway. Each KAMPFAR album had partly historical references. On the new album but we have placed more emphasis on the present time, which makes it different from the previous albums.


What are your plans for the future?


This is a very difficult question. We are currently on the road and we like it. But it is impossible to say, what will come. Before this tour, we had two offers for tours in the U.S. but we do not yet know exactly what we will do. We like to guide our way. Now we are here and everything else will come to light.


You are with the band since the beginning 20 years ago. What changed in this time?


It has changed a lot and most of it is personal - my personal way to live. Between 1999 and 2005, was a very rough time for me and I had to decide, whether I want to continue like this, or I am concentrating fully on KAMPFAR. I do not know if I would still be here, if I had not decided on KAMPFAR. Many of my former friends are now dead - because of drugs or other shit. And now I'm again on a very different path. I have children and I have to be there for them. That was the biggest change in my life. And I've got my attention now really focused on KAMPFAR and that's a good thing.


Do you want to tell something to your fans?


We could of course only play at big festivals or so, but we do not want, because it is what we are! We love to play in small clubs, where we meet the people. This is more valuable than to have large crowds in front of us. We love the contact with the fans, that's what we do, that is KAMPFAR!
