Kürzlich habe ich die Chinesische Pagan/Folk Metal Band TENGGER CAVALRY entdeckt und nachdem mir ihre Musik ausgesprochen gut gefällt, habe ich mich sehr darüber gefreut, dass sie mir trotz der riesigen Entfernung per Mail einiges von ihrer Band erzählt haben.
Hier könnt ihr lesen, was mir der Bandleader Nature Zhang geschrieben hat:

Mein Name ist Elisabeth und ich arbeite für das österreichische Online-Magazin earshot.
Ich bin sehr glücklich, die Möglichkeit zu haben, euch einige Fragen stellen.

Ich habe bis vor einer Woche noch nie etwas über eure Band gehört. Aber dann habe ich die neue CD "Ancient Call" zum Review bekommen, und ich war wirklich fasziniert, solche Musik von einer Band die in China lebt zu hören! Bitte stellt euch ein wenig vor!


Hallo Elisabeth, danke dir. Wir sind TENGGER CAVALRY, eine Mongolische und Nordasiatische Folk-Metal-Band aus China. Wir kombinieren die Volksmusik und Tradition der Mongolei und von anderen nordasiatischen Nomaden mit Heavy Metal Musik.




Ich kenne keine andere Chinesische Band! Gibt es eine Metal-Szene in China, so wie in anderen Ländern?


Ja, es gibt seit Jahrzehnten eine Metal-Szene in China. Und es gibt ein paar ziemlich gute Bands wie VOODOO KUNGFU, NINE TREASURES und andere Pagan & Folk-Metal-Bands. Leider ist Rock-Musik nicht populär am Chinesischen Musikmarkt.


Ist es einfach für euch, einen Platz zu finden um live zu spielen in China, oder gibt es nicht viele Möglichkeiten?


Peking, die Hauptstadt von China, ist der beste Ort im ganzen Land um aufzutreten. Es gibt einige Live-Häuser für Bands, um zu spielen. Und in den letzten Jahren haben wir ein wirklich großes Open-Air-Musik-Festival in China, wo man Menschen beim verrückten Pogo und Mosh sehen kann unter dem Himmel des Heavy Metal, haha




Habt ihr jemals außerhalb Chinas gespielt?


Bis jetzt nicht, aber wir würden das gerne in der Zukunft machen


Eure Musik ist dem Europäischen Pagan/Folk Metal sehr ähnlich, aber ihr verwendet auch Elemente der Chinesischen Musik. Wo findet ihr eure Inspiration?


Ich finde die Inspiration von der Nomadenkultur in Nord-Asien, wie die Mongolische und Kasachische. Sie sind die tapferen Nomaden und Reiter, die in der unendlichen Grassteppe leben.


Wie intensiv ist eure Verbindung zu der traditionellen chinesischen Volksmusik?


Xin Wang und ich können beide die Pferdekopfgeige spielen oder auch die Morin Khuur, eine mongolische Geige. Und ich höre viele asiatische Volksmusik und andere Musik aus aller Welt, wie keltische Musik.


Welche Instrumente verwendet ihr für Ihre speziellen chinesischen Soundeffekte?


Für den Großteil der Hauptmelodie verwenden wir Pferdekopfgeige; für den besonderen Zupf-Effekt verwenden wir eine Dombra, ein kasachisches Zupfinstrument, das zwei Saiten hat.


Ihr seid sehr fleißig! Jedes Jahr ein neues Album! Wie ist das möglich für euch? Wie oft könnt ihr Zeit miteinander verbringen?


Für mich ist das Komponieren eine Notwendigkeit um meine Liebe und Bewunderung für die unendliche Grassteppe zum Ausdruck zu bringen. Es ist so, dass ich die Hauptstruktur des Songs zuerst beende, und dann der Geiger Xin Wang die Melodie entsprechend komponiert.


Wird das Songwriting nur von einer Person durchgeführt, oder ist die ganze Band beteiligt?


Ich bin der Hauptsongschreiber, und Xin Wang ist der kooperative Songwriter.




Was sind eure Pläne für die Zukunft?


Ich hoffe, wir könnten nach Europa reisen, um eine offizielle Tour in den nächsten Jahren zu machen. Aber jetzt sind wir in erster Linie darauf fokussiert, unser neues Album „Ancient Call“ zu promoten.


Was denkst du, werde ich jemals die Chance haben, euch auf der Bühne zu sehen, oder ist Europa zu weit weg für euch?


Haha ich hoffe es. Tatsächlich haben wir viele Anfragen von unseren Fans auf Facebook, ob wir nach Europa kommen um live aufzutreten.

Recently I have discovered the Chinese Pagan / Folk Metal band TENGGER CAVALRY and because I like their music very much, and I was very happy, that in spite of the immense distance, they told me something about their band by mail.

I have never heard something about your band until one week before. But then I got your new CD “Ancient call” for a review, and I was really fascinated, to hear such music from a band living in China! Please introduce yourself a little bit!


Hi Elisabeth, thank you very much. We are TENGGER CAVALRY, Mongolian & North-Asian folk metal band from China. We combine the folk music and tradition of Mongolia and other North-Asian nomad with heavy metal music.


I don´t know any other Chinese Band! Is there a Metal-Scene in China like in other countries?


Yes there has been the metal scene in China for decades. And there are some pretty good band such as Voodoo Kungfu, Nine Treasures and other pagan & folk metal band. Unfortunately rock music is not popular in Chinese music market.


Is it easy for you, to find a place to play live in China, or are there not many possibilities?


Beijing, the capital of China, is the best place to perform in the entire nation. There are some live houses for bands to play. And in recent years we have really big open air music festival in China, in which you can see people pogo and mosh crazily under the sky of heavy metal, haha


Have you ever played live outside China?


Not yet, but we would like to in the future.


Your music is similar to European Pagan/Folk Metal but you also use elements from the Chinese music. Where do you find your inspiration?


I find the inspiration from the nomadic culture of North Asia such as Mongol and Kazakh. They are the brave nomadic and horseman live on the vast grassland.


How intensive is your connection to the traditional Chinese Folk Music?


Xin Wang and I can both play Horse-head Fiddle, or the Morin Khuur, a Mongolian fiddle. And I listen to many Asian folk music and other world music such as Celtic music.


Which instruments are you using for your special Chinese sound-effects?


For most of the main melody, we use Horse-head Fiddle; for the special plucking instrument effect, we use Dombra, a Kazakh plucking instrument that has 2 strings.


You are very hard-working! Every year a new album! How is this possible for you? How often can you spend time together?


I just compose as a need for me to express my love and admiration towards the vast grassland. Actually I will finish the main structure of the song first, and then Xin Wang, the fiddle player, will compose the melody accordingly.


Is song writing only done by one person, or is the whole band involved?


I am the main songwriter, and Xin Wang is the cooperative songwriter.


What are your plans for the future?


I hope we could go to EU to have a official tour in the next few years. But now we are focusing on promote our new album “Ancient Call”


What do you think, will I ever have the chance to see you on stage, or is Europe to far away for you?


Haha I hope so. Actually we got lots of request from our fans on Facebook that we could go to EU to perform.
