Die Jungs von POP EVIL sind bereits seit gut 10 Jahren im Geschäft und in den USA ein ganz großes Ding. Für einen Abstecher nach Europa hat es jedoch bisher noch nicht gereicht. Das holten sie aber nun gemeinsam mit FIVE FINGER DEATH PUNCH und wehenden Fahnen nach. Mit ihrem dritten Album "Onyx" sollten sie auch hier Problemlos alle Türen aufstoßen können.

Wir trafen exklusiv Frontmann Leigh Kakaty zum aller ersten Europa-Interview und hatten hatten in Wien ein sehr angenehmes sowie interessantes Gespräch.


Hey Leigh, wie geht’s?


Danke, mir geht’s gut, ich bin wirklich sehr aufgeregt. Es ist ein wunderschöner Tag draußen in Wien und die Tour fängt gerade an, wir hatten erst ein paar Shows bis jetzt.




Ich glaube, es ist euer erster Besuch in Europa…


Ja, so ist es – unsere erste Tour in Europa. Und es war unglaublich bis jetzt, es ist eine nette Erfahrung bis jetzt und das Album kommt im Mai heraus, also ist es gut hier her zu kommen, die Band dem Publikum vorzustellen und so viele Leute wie möglich zu treffen. Also, es war bis jetzt wirklich großartig.


Schön zu hören! Gestern hattet ihr einen Tag frei, hattet ihr die Chance euch Wien etwas anzusehen?


Ja klar, hatte ich! Wir haben uns das Belvedere und den Stephansdom angesehen. Es ist toll, die Geschichte hier zu sehen. Alles ist einfach um vieles älter als in den U.S. Und es ist großartig, das alles, worüber man gelernt hat, einmal in Realität zu sehen. Wenn man es auf einmal aus dieser Perspektive sieht, macht es die Welt um einiges kleiner. (lacht)


Habt ihr auch Unterschiede zwischen dem Publikum in Europa und in den U.S. bemerkt?


Ja, ich glaube, dafür, dass wir das erste Mal hier in Europa sind, ist das Publikum wirklich nett zu uns. Ich glaube, da kommt uns jetzt die harte Arbeit in den U.S. zu Gute. Und nun sind wir hier, die Leute freuen sich über FIVE FINGER DEATH PUNCH und UPON A BURNING BODY waren ja auch schon einmal hier. Also ist es ganz entspannt, das Publikum hier ist sehr offen und sagen: „Wir haben zwar noch nie von denen gehört, aber sie rocken!“ Also finde ich, dass es wirklich großartig hier ist.


Eure ersten zwei Alben waren in den U.S. sehr erfolgreich und ihr habt dort viele Shows vor großem Publikum gespielt, also kann man sagen, dass ihr zuhause schon eine richtig große Sache seid. Aber warum hat es so lange gedauert, bis ihr euch nach Europa gewagt habt?


In den U.S. sind wir bei einem großen unabhängigen Label, der Erfolg ist unserer harten Arbeit zuzuschreiben und hat halt etwas länger gedauert. Wahrscheinlich, weil wir nicht den Push eines großen Labels hinter uns hatten, die uns hier her gebracht haben. Es war ein lange gehegter Traum von uns, das zu machen und wir hoffen, dass wir jetzt nach den ganzen Turbulenzen mit den Visa usw. um hier her zu kommen, hier Fuß fassen können. und hoffentlich bald wieder kommen können. Hoffentlich schon dieses Jahr und dann nächsten Frühling und dann im Sommer wieder usw. Wir werden alles tun, was in unserer Macht steht, dass wir den Durchbruch in Europa schaffen.




Ich hatte glücklicherweise heute die Möglichkeit, mir euer Album schon anzuhören und es gefällt mir sehr gut…

…. aber für die, die bis Mai warten müssen, um es zu hören und nicht hier sein können heute – wie würdest du den Sound von POP EVIL beschreiben?


Ich finde, dass dieses Album „Onyx“ sehr dunkel ist. Es ist ein guter Kontrast von heavy Gitarrensounds und melodischen Vokals. Du wirst das spüren, wenn du uns heute live siehst – wir haben eine großartige Energie – und das ohne Requisiten, Pyrotechnik oder Feuerwerk. Wir sind zuhause bekannt dafür, was wir auf der Bühne vollbringen. Wir zeigen den Leuten, dass wir ihr Geld wert sind. So machen wir das und wir versuchen, dass wenn wir die Bühne verlassen die Leute das Gefühl haben, dass das unsere Leidenschaft ist, was wir machen.


Was war die Idee hinter dem Bandnamen POP EVIL?


Der Bandname entstand so, wenn man das hernimmt, was Pop ausmacht und was das Rock Genre ausmacht – dann kommt man etwas vom Mainstream ab. Und dafür haben wir von Anfang an gekämpft und wir waren immer schon Rock Typen und es geht einfach um den schmalen Grat zwischen Mainstream und „normal“. Wir waren immer ein bisschen drunter und auch darüber. POP EVIL ist für uns ein "Way of life" geworden.


Wo siehst du die Unterschiede, wenn man eure früheren Alben mit dem neuen Sound vergleicht?


Ich glaube, die ersten zwei Alben waren die Vorstufen zum jetzigen Album. Wie ich vorher schon sagte, als unabhängige Band muss man einfach schwer arbeiten und Sachen aus der eigenen Tasche bezahlen, wir wurden aber dadurch bessere Musiker und haben viel daraus gelernt. Also ist alles ein ganz natürlicher Prozess und dieses Album ist ganz definitiv das beste, das wir je herausgebracht haben. Wir werden als Songwriter immer besser und auch als Studiomusiker, aber der Punkt ist, die Energie von der Bühne auf eine CD zu bannen ist immer eine Challenge, aber durch den Lernprozess bei den ersten beiden Album haben wir das jetzt mehr unter Kontrolle. Auf "Onyx" sind wir wirklich extrem stolz. Wir haben unseren Beweis dafür in den U.S. und Leute die Rock mögen, mögen einfach Rock, ganz egal wo sie leben. Es ist einfach natürlich, es ist ehrlich. Dieses Zeug haben wir geschrieben, es ist nichts Fake auf dem neuen Album. It's just hard balls to the wall rock! (Übersetzung v.d.Red.nicht möglich ;) )




Woher kommt der Titel des Albums?


“Onyx“ – der Name kommt von einem ganz dunklen Ort. In den US hatten wir mit Band Labels, Probleme und allen möglichen Sachen zu kämpfen. Bandmitglieder sind gekommen und wieder gegangen und die Gegenwart steht einer Rockband immer feindlich gegenüber. All diese Frustration und den Zorn den wir hatten, hat sich irgendwie aufgestaut, aber es gab immer noch genug Positives – die Band war am aufsteigenden Ast und es erinnerte uns an den Stein namens Onyx. Es ist zwar kein Diamant oder ein Stück Gold, aber am Ende des Tages möchte jeder ein Stückchen von einem Onyx. Er ist zeitlos und das wollen wir als Band auch sein und den Test der Zeit bestehen – und jetzt sind wir hier und versuchen das eben.


Mit „War Of Angels“ hattet ihr die Chance mit dem bekannten Produzenten Johnny K. zu arbeiten – Was brachte euch dazu, wieder mit ihm zu arbeiten?


Wir hatten des Gefühl, dass wir da noch etwas unvollständig gelassen haben bei der Arbeit mit Johnny. Mit „War Of Angels“ haben wir mehr auf ihn gehört – er hat uns mehr oder weniger gesagt, was wir machen sollen. Wir waren noch ganz grün hinter den Ohren zu dieser Zeit. Und wir mussten noch viel von ihm lernen. Bei „Onyx“ haben wir zu ihm gesagt: „Hey Johnny, wir haben einen Deal für dich, wir sagen dir jetzt wie wir es machen, wir sind nämlich diejenigen, die die Platte für den Rest unseres Lebens spielen müssen, nicht du.“ Dieses Mal war es mehr eine Art Zusammenarbeit mit Johnny. Die Führung kam von der Band und er konnte sich mehr auf seine Produzenten-Arbeit fokussieren – und ich glaube, das ist es, wie The Magic happened. Und wir sind alle sehr zufrieden damit, was dabei herausgekommen ist.


Mit „Trenches“ seit ihr auf Platz 1 bei Rock Radio geschossen und mit „Deal With The Devil“ habt ihr es wieder geschafft. Habt ihr den Erfolg erwartet und wie waren eure Reaktionen, als ihr es erfahren habt?


Wir haben so hart gearbeitet und bei „Trenches“ wussten wir einfach, dass wir da was ganz besonderes kreiert haben. Es ist schwierig Nummer 1 Hits in den US zu haben – genauso wie in Europa. Darum haben wir das definitiv nicht erwartet, aber es war großartig. Ich glaube unsere Reaktion darauf war noch härter zu arbeiten. Der Applaus bei diesen zwei Nummer 1 Hits ist auch in Europa am lautesten. Ich hoffe einfach, dass es so weitergeht und dass wir zurückkommen können und unsere Arbeit weitermachen können. Und dann gehen wir zurück nach US und bereiten das nächste Album vor und dann kommen wir im Frühling oder Sommer wieder zurück.




Was sind eure Haupteinflüsse und Inspirationen bei den Lyrics?


Da ist jeder Song komplett anders. Bei „Trenches“ geht es darum sich mehr auf seine Taten zu konzentrieren, als sich zu beschweren. Wenn man aus der Scheiße herauswill, dann muss man sich selbst darum kümmern – Schritt für Schritt. Das beschreibt die Mentalität der Band auch ganz gut. Diese Lyrics kommen von persönlichen Erlebnissen und eine Menge Erlebnisse erfahren wir auch von unseren Fans. Unsere Fanbase wird immer größer und so treffen wir eine Menge Leute mit unbegreiflichen Problemen – du verstehst: „Deal With The Devil“ – Drogenmissbrauch, Missbrauch generell. So haben wir dann eben versucht Lyrics darüber zu finden und Leuten zu helfen und Hoffnung zu geben, sie manchmal aus den täglichen Problemen des Lebens zu entführen.


Wie kamt ihr zu der Chance mit FIVE FINGER DEATH PUNCH auf Tour zu gehen?


Wir hatten das tolle Angebot bei Eleven Seven zu unterschreiben, das ist das Label von MÖTLEY CRÜE, FIVE FINGER DEATH PUNCH und PAPA ROACH. Und wir merken einfach, dass wir hier genau richtig sind, um die Band in Europa zu pushen. Als wir auf die Idee kamen nach Europa zu kommen, war jeder wirklich total aufgeregt und Freunde von uns hatten immer positive Erinnerungen an die Touren in Europa, auch an Wien. Wir können es kaum erwarten, die Menge heute zu sehen. Der Gasometer ist beeindruckend, ich liebe die Architektur. Wir waren im Gasometer-Center Mittagessen und haben Leute getroffen, die sich acht Shows der Tour ansehen wollten, aber nur fünf schaffen – das ist verrückt! Die Leute hier wissen einfach was Heavy Metal bedeutet. Das ist sehr inspirierend. Als danke an Eleven Seven und FIVE FINGER DEATH PUNCH für diese Chance.


Und wie kommt ihr miteinander backstage klar?


Es ist jetzt gerade mal die erste Woche und wir sind die meiste Zeit mit komischen Sachen beschäftigt wie zum Beispiel wo das Shampoo ist. Und wir versuchen so viel wie möglich von der Architektur um uns herum aufzunehmen. Es ist einfach wunderbar in Wien, aber ich habe das Grab von Mozart noch nicht gesehen, hoffentlich das nächste Mal. Aber am liebsten mag ich das Wetter mit 17 °C - zuhause schneit es. (lacht).




Ich habe gesehen, dass ihr gemeinsam mit DMC von RUN DMC einen Remix von "Trenches" gemacht habt. Wie kamt ihr darauf und hattet ihr keine Angst, die Rockfans zu verschrecken?


Tja, er hat uns letztes Jahr in Kansas spielen gesehen und liebte den Song. In der heutigen Musikwelt muss man kreativ sein und die Aufmerksamkeit vom eigenen Musikgenre zu bekommen. Wenn dann da so ein Typ kommt, der so ein großes Ding ist wie DMC, der etwas mit dir machen will, warum sollte man das dann nicht ausprobieren. Warum sollte man sich nicht zusammenschließen, die Genres mixen und sich gegenseitig helfen Aufmerksamkeit zu kriegen? Man sollte ein Bewusstsein für beide Seiten herstellen und sagen: "wir alle versuchen, dieses Spiel weiter zu bringen". Wir sind total stolz auf unsere Rock-Wurzeln und die einzige Art es zu zeigen ist es zu teilen. Das ganze Ding war sehr dynamisch und die Rückmeldungen waren großteils positiv. Klar, man bekommt schon seit Fett weg bei den Die hard-Rockfans, aber das ist okay und wir respektieren das. Wir wissen, was wir kölnnen und was wir auf der Bühne schaffen und wir müssten lügen, wenn wir sagen würden, dass wir keine RUN DMC-Fans waren, als wir jung waren. Wir haben unsere Gründe dafür gehabt und am Ende des Tages müssen wir selbst in den Spiegel sehen. Und mit diesem großartigen Typen zu arbeiten war unglaublich.


Also habt ihr auch zukünftig keine Angst vor solchen Experimenten?


Absolut nicht. Wenn sich etwas ergeben sollte, dann werden wir auch etwas daraus machen.


Was ist eigentlich mit coolen oder witzigen Tourstories?


Oh mann, da muss ich mal nachdenken. Irgendwas Verrücktes... Es gibt tonnenweise Geschichten, die wir gerne mit euch teilen würden, aber das Wichtigste ist, dass unsere Fans unglaublich sind. Die Geschichten, die erwartet passieren unterhalten uns nicht, aber wenn man sieht, wie unsere Fans schräge Sachen veranstalten, durchdrehen oder uns und mir wirklich große Bilder und Geschenke bringen, dann sind das die wirklich coolen Geschichten. Ganz witzig ist für mich auch zu versuchen, hier nicht verloren zu gehen. In ein paar Städten ist es wirklich schwierig, wenn man alleine unterwegs ist und sich nur ein Stück Pizza besorgen will. (lacht)

Hey Leigh, how are you doing?


I´m doing fine man, i´m really excited. It´s a beautiful day outside in Vienna and the tour is just gettin started, we only had about four shows yet.


I think it is your first visit in Europe...


Yes it is – our first time touring in Europe. It´s been awesome so far, it´s a nice learning experience so far and the album will come out in May, so it´s good to come out and introduce the band and meet as many people as possible. So it´s been awesome so far.


Nice to hear. Yesterday you had a day-off, did you had the chance to see something in Vienna?


Yes man, i did! We Saw the Belvedere and the St Stephens Cathedral. It´s incredible to see the history here. Everything is so much older than in the US. It´s always nice to see things that you study about in reallity. When you put this into perspective, it makes the world a lot smaller. (laughs)


Have you also recognized differences in the audiences in comparison to the US?


Yeah, i think for a for a first-time band starting their way here in Europe, they´ve been very nice to us. I think that goes with the hard work we´ve done back in the states. And now when we are here, people are excited about FIVE FINGER DEATH PUNCH - and also UPON A BURNING BODY been here before. So it´s cool, i think the people here are very open minded and say: “we´ve never heard about them, but they are rockin!” So it´s really awesome to be here.


Your first two records were really successful in the US and you played many shows before big audiences there, so we can say you are something like a really big thing at home. But why did it take so long to start over here?


In the US we were on a big independent label, so we kind of credit our selfs with what we have done, so it took a little bit longer with the process. Obviously because of having not the big force of a major label behind us getting us here. It´s been a dream for a long time for us to do this and we hope after struggling around with the politics to come over here we can get a feet down with this first tour. And hopefully we can be back as soon as possible, hopefully later this year and then next spring and summer and so on. And we just keep doing what we need to do to break through in Europe


I had luckily already the chance to listen to your album today and i really like it...

...but for the people, who have to wait until May and don´t have the chance to be here today – can you please try to describe the sound of POP EVIL?


I think this record – “Onyx” – is dark. It´s got a nice contrast of heavy guitar and melodic vocals. You will feel that when you see us tonight – we bring a high energy – and that´s without any props, pyros, fireworks or so. We are definitely known at home for what we do on stage live. You know, entertaining the people giving in essence their money’s worth, is what we try to do and try to make sure that we leave the stage and the people feel that these guys are passionate about what they do.


What was the idea of your band name POP EVIL?


The band name was kind of, you know, if you take on whatever Pop is and the Rock-Genre – it becomes a lot further away from mainstream. So we was battling that from the beginning on and we were always rock guys and it´s about the thin line of mainstream and “normal”. We were always a little bit above and a little bit below. So POP EVIL was kind a way of live for us.


Where do you see the differences in comparison to your former records and do you think the newer sound is some kind of natural evolution?


I think the first two albums were definitely stepping stones to this one. As i said, as a independent band, we had to work a lot and do thinks from our own pocket, so we became better musicians and learned very much in this time. So everything is a naturally progression and this album is definitely the best we put out so far. We get better as song writer and studio musicians, but the point is, to capture the energy from the stage on disc is always a challenge, but we got more control over this because of the first two albums. “Onyx” is something we are really gonna be proud of. We got the prove in the US and people who like rock, like rock, no matter where they live. It´s just natural, it´s hones, it´s stuff we have all written that is nothing fake or preconceived about the new record. It´s just hard balls to the wall rock.


What is the title about?


”Onyx” – the name comes from a dark place. In the US we had to fight through band labels, issues, previous band members coming and going, and all you adverse as a rock band in today’s world. All that frustration and all that anger that we had, kind of built up, but there was still something positive – the band was still on a upclimbe and it reminded us on the stone called onyx. It might be a diamond and it might not be a piece of gold, but at the end of the day everyone likes a piece of onyx. It´s always a timeless kind of thing and we want to be a band that´s also timeless to stand the test of time – so here we are trying to do it.


With “War Of Angels” you had the chance to work with the well-known producer Johnny K. – What was to reaseon to do it again with him?


We felt we had some unfinished Business with Johnny. With “War Of Angels” it was more listening to him – kind of telling us what to do. We were very green at the time. We had a lot to learn from him. With “Onyx” we said to him: “Hey Johnny, this is the deal, we tell you how we do it, we are the ones who have to play this record for the rest of our lives, not you.” It was more collaborate way to work with Johnny this time. The leadership came from the band, so he could focus more on his producing work – and i think that´s how the magic happened. We were both very satisfied how it turned out.


With “Trenches” you hit position #1 on Rock Radio and did it again with “Deal With The Devil”. Did you expect such a success and how did you react as you heard about it?


We definitely worked hard and we knew we had something special with “Trenches”. It´s always hard to have number one songs in the US - and also in Europe. So we didn´t really expect it, but it´s been great man. I think the reaction is more hard work. I mean the applause is also in Europe the loudest on these two number one songs. I hope it continues and we can come back to do the ground work again. And then we will get back to the US to prepare the next record on the top of the year and then come back in spring and summer.


What´s your main influences an inspiration for lyrics?


Every song is really different. “Trenches” is about focusing on your actions rather than to complain. If you want to get out of this mess room, we got to dig our way – one step at a time. That´s a lot of our mentality as a band. Those lyrics come from personal experience and a lot of experiences come from fans. Our fanbase is getting bigger so you meet a lot more people with unbelievable issues – you know: “Deal With The Devil” – substance abuse, abuse in general. So it was about trying to take a stand to write lyrics to help people and hope that they can take something away for the everyday cares of our lives sometimes.


How did you get the chance to be on this tour with 5FDP?


We had the great opportunity to sign to Eleven Seven, which is the label of MÖTLEY CRÜE, FIVE FINGER DEATH PUNCH, PAPA ROACH. And we felt we are here at the right place to push the band in Europe. Once the idea started in to roll over Europe, everyone was excited and friends of us always had positive memories about touring here, also in Vienna. We can´t wait to see the crowd today. The Gasometer is awesome, i love the architecture. We were for lunch in the Gasometer-Center an met people there who want to visit eight shows on this tour, but just can do five – that´s crazy. The people here know what it means to catch heavy metal. That´s very inspiring. So thanks to Eleven Seven and FIVE FINGER DEATH PUNCH for this chance.


And how do you come along with the other bands backstage?


It´s the first week and we are most of the time trying to find out silly things like, where is the shampoo. And we try to catch as many as possible of the architecture around. It´s very beautiful in Vienna, but i didn´t see Mozart’s graveyard, but hopefully next time. But my favourite is the 17 degrees weather out there – it´s snowing back home. (laughs)


I saw you did a Remix from “Trenches” together with DMC from RUN DMC. How came the idea and where you not afraid to scare off the Rockfans?


Well, he saw us playing in Kansas last year and loved this song. In todays music-world you have to be creative to attract attention to your genre of music. With a guy that is big as DMC who wants to do something, why not to try something out, why not to team up, mix genres and help each other to get attention? To create a awareness for both sides and say: “we all try to move ahead in this game”. We are really proud of our rock-roots and the only way to show it is to share it. The whole thing came organic and the response was most positive. Sure, you get your hits from die hard rock fans, but that’s ok and we respect that. We know what we can do and what we are capable to do on stage and we would lie if not say we were fans of RUN DMC as we grow up. We did this for our own reasons and we are the one who have to take a look into the mirror at the end of a day. To work with this great guy was amazing.


So you are not afraid to do such experiments again?


Absolutely not. When things come up, we just run with it.


Do you have a cool or funny tourstory?


Man, i am trying to think. Anything crazy... tons of stories, we are willing to share, but the most important thing is that the fans are amazing. Those stories you expect are not really entertaining to us, but when you see the fans make weird stuff, going crazy, bringing really big pictures and presents to us, to me that’s the coolest story. The funny thing for me is trying here not to get lost. In a few countries it´s really hard if you are walking around alone and trying to get a piece of pizza. (laughs)
I hope we can continue collecting positive stories and i want to thank you really much for our first European interview!
