HEAVY TIGER, die schwedische Girlie-Rockband, haben ihr Debütalbum auf den Markt gebracht und rocken die Welt. Jung, Mädels, voller Power und Liebe zur Musik wollen sie der Welt zeigen, dass Frauen genauso gut Musik machen können wie Männer.

Wir haben Sängerin und Gitarristin Maja Linn für euch interviewt und einige Fragen zur Band, ihrer Musik und ihren zukünftigen Plänen gestellt.


Wie fühlt ihr euch jetzt, wo euer Debüt-Album fertig ist und ihr es in den Händen halten könnt?


Es fühlt sich großartig an! Es ist ein ganz besonderes und komisches Gefühl die erste LP in den Händen zu halten. Wir hatten unsere Release-Party in Stockholm die Nacht darauf und haben sehr gute Resonanz auf das Album und die neuen Songs bekommen! Alle LPs auf dem ersten Gig verkauft! Es ist auch irgendwie ein komisches Gefühl, Bewertungen über das Album zu lesen. Die Songs wurden auf einer akustischen Gitarre in meinem Schlafzimmer geboren und Menschen auf der ganzen Welt hören nun das Endprodukt und analysieren unsere Musik. Es ist faszinierend, dass Musik sich so weit und schnell verbreiten kann.




Wie würdet ihr eure Musik beschreiben und klassifizieren?


Da ist eine Menge an Freude und Liebe zur Musik. Wir lieben es wirklich Musik zu spielen und miteinander zu spielen und ich denke, das hört man. Du kannst auch eine Menge der Einstellung und Power in HEAVY TIGER’s Musik hören.


Woher nehmt ihr eure Inspiration und welche Musiker haben euch beeinflusst?
Was sind eure Lieblingsbands?


Wir alle haben unterschiedliche Einflüsse aus verschiedenen Arten von Musik, die eine gute Kombo für unser Songwriting machen. Ich bekomme meine Inspiration von Bands wie THE CLASH, THIN LIZZY, HANOI ROCKS und AC/DC.


Wie entstand HEAVY TIGER und wer hatte die Idee für den Namen und warum?


Ich wollte eine Mädchen Kickass Rock-n-Roll-Band gründen, der Welt beweisen "girls got balls". Rock ist nicht nur eine Sache von Jungs, es nicht eine Frage des Geschlechts, Mädchen können mindestens genau so gut rocken wie Jungen, wenn nicht besser. Als Mädchen im Musikgeschäft musst du oft gegen eine Menge Vorurteile kämpfen und ich möchte diesen Bullshit zerquetschen und der Welt zeigen: Girls got balls!
Der Bandname HEAVY TIGER kommt aus einem FLAMING SIDEBURNS Title. Es klingt sehr cool und die Bedeutung ist egal. Es ist oft wie bei Rock’n’Roll Texten oder Ausdrücken - die Bedeutung ist nicht wichtig, es muss keine Bedeutung haben. Was wichtig ist, ist die Art, wie du dich fühlst, wenn du es hörst und was du damit assoziierst.




Wer macht das Songwriting? Arbeitet ihr zusammen?


Wir arbeiten zusammen. Es beginnt oft mit mir und meiner akustischen Gitarre.
Dann bringe ich die Basis eines Songs mit einem Riff und einigen Melodien/Lyric Ideen in den Proberaum und Astrid macht dann eine großartige Arbeit mit den Melodien und dem Gesang. Ich und Astrid sind eine sehr gute Songwriting-Combo! Wir würden es nicht alleine schaffen, aber gemeinsam sind wir Kickass!


Was könnt ihr mir über euer Album “Saigon Kiss” sagen? Woher kommt die Idee zum Albumtitel, das Artwork und worüber sind die Lyriks?


Wir haben versucht, das Album so sauber und einfach wie möglich zu halten, weil wir denken, dass das der beste Weg ist es zu machen. Sowohl der Titel als auch das Artwork sind sehr sauber und wir denken, das macht es einfacher für das Publikum sich an uns zu erinnern, was wichtig ist. Wir versuchen immer einheitlich zu arbeiten mit Artwork, Merchandise und Bühnenoutfits. Der visuelle Aspekt ist auch sehr wichtig! Du kannst dich nicht nur auf die Musik konzentrieren, auch das Rundherum um die Musik muss gut aussehen und gut zusammenarbeiten.


Was sind eure Pläne für die Zukunft?


Wir haben gerade unser erstes Album veröffentlicht und nun wollen wir so viel wie möglich Touren und es auf der Welt verbreiten. Wir haben noch eine Menge zu spielen bevor das so ist, aber ich denke es wird jetzt um einiges leichter ins nächste Level zu gehen, nachdem wir Studiomaterial zur Verfügung haben.
Unser Ziel ist es, bald das nächste Album herauszubringen, innerhalb eines Jahres.




Habt ihr eine Tour geplant, oder würdet ihr auf Tour gehen als Support einer anderen Band?


Wir werden viel spielen in diesem Sommer, vor allem in Schweden, aber wir haben auch schon damit begonnen eine Deutschlandtour zu planen für dieses Frühjahr. Keine Daten oder Shows sind noch offiziell.


Für eine Newcomer-Band ist es oft schwer und es ist nicht einfach von der Musik zu leben. Was macht ihr in eurem “normalen” Leben? Habt ihr Jobs, oder studiert ihr noch, oder irgendetwas anderes?


Astrid ist immer noch in der Schule, sie ist im letzten Jahr der Sekundarstufe. Ich arbeite in einem Bekleidungsgeschäft und Sara in einem Kindergarten. Keiner dieser Arbeitsplätze sind Vollzeit, nur zusätzlich, denn wir wollen flexibel bleiben und in der Lage sein, jederzeit auf Tour zu gehen. Unser Ziel ist es natürlich Musik Vollzeit zu machen, aber es ist, wie du gesagt hast, schwer Geld mit der Musik zu verdienen und hey, irgendwie muss die Miete gezahlt werden (ich und Sara leben zusammen, wir sind Vollzeit-Tiger). Aber ich denke, die Dinge beginnen bald zu geschehen, ich kann es fühlen! Und dann können wir unsere Jobs aufgeben und nur Rock den ganzen Tag und die ganze Nacht lang machen!


Ihr seid noch sehr jung und Frauen! Ist es hart im Rockbusiness ernst genommen zu werden?


Es ist für uns schwieriger als für Männer, weil Frauen oft nicht ernst genommen werden im Musikgeschäft und wir haben oft mit einer Menge Vorurteile und Schwachsinn zu kämpfen. Die Menschen erwarten nicht viel von uns, weil wir junge Mädchen sind, aber nach einer Live-Show mit den HEAVY TIGERs ändern sie ihre Meinung und werden die wahren Gläubigen! Wir beweisen dass sie falsch liegen, weil wir einen Kickass Live-Act liefern. Wir sind auf einer Mission der Welt zu zeigen, GIRLS GOT BALLS!




Nun, ich bin auch oft sehr skeptisch was Frauen-Bands betrifft, aber ihr habt einen fantastischen, groovy Sound und ich genieße wirklich eure Musik. Ich wünsche euch das Beste für die Zukunft, einen steilen Aufstieg in den Rockhimmel und dass ihr für eine lange Zeit Spaß habt mit eurer Musik!

How do you feel now, where your debut album is ready and you can hold it in your hands?


It feels awesome! It's a very special and weird feeling to hold your first LP in your hands. We had our release party in Stockholm just the other night and we got very good response on the album and the new songs! All the LPs sold out on the first gig! It's also kind of a weird feeling to read reviews about the album. The songs were born on an acoustic guitar in my bedroom and now people all over the world listen to the finnished product and analyse our music. It's fascinating that music can spread this widely and fast.


How would you describe and classify your music?


There's a lot of joy and love to the music. We really love to play music and play with each other and I think you can hear that. You can also hear a lot of attitude and power in Heavy Tiger's music.


Where from do you get your inspiration and which musicians had an effect on you?
What are your favorite bands?


We all have different influences from different kinds of music which make a good kombo for our songwriting. I get my inspiration from bands like The Clash, Thin Lizzy, Hanoi Rocks and AC/DC.


How come HEAVY TIGER into existence and who had the idea for the name and why?


I wanted to start an all girl kickass rock n roll band to prove the world that girls got balls, rock isn’t just a boy’s thing, it’s not a matter of gender, girls can rock at least as good as boys, if not better? As a girl in the music business you often have to fight a lot of prejudice and I want to crush that bullshit and show the world that GIRLS GOT BALLS!
The band name HEAVY TIGER comes from a Flaming Sideburns title. It sounds very cool and the meaning of it does not matter. It's often like that with rock n roll lyrics or expressions - the meaning is not important, it doesn't even have to have a meaning. What's important is the way you feel when you hear it and how you associate.


Who makes the songwriting? Do you work together?


We work together. It often starts out with me and my acoustic guitar. Then I bring the foundation of a song with a riff and some melody/lyrcis ideas to the rehearsal place and Astrid does some great work with melodies and vocals. Me and Astrid are actually a very good song writing combo! We wouldn't make it on our own but together we are kickass!


What can you tell me about your rekord “Saigon Kiss”? What was the idea of the Album title, the artwork and what are your lyrics about?

We tried to keep the album as clean and simple as possible, because we think that is the best way of doing it. Both the title and the artwork are very clean and we think that makes it easier for the audience to remember us, which is important. We always try to work unitary with artwork, merchandise and stage outfits. The visual aspect is very important too! You can't just focus on the music, you have to make everything around the music look good and work well together.


What are your plans for the future?


We just released our first full length album and now we want to tour as much as possible and spread the word! We've been playing a lot before this but I think it will be a lot easier to move on to the next level now when we have some studio material available.
Our aim is to release the next album pretty soon, within a year.


Have you planed a tour, or would you go on tour as support of any other band?


We will play a lot this summer, mainly in Sweden, but we've also started to plan a tour in Germany for this spring. No dates or shows are official yet.

For a newcomer band it’s often hart and it’s not easy to live from making music. What are you doing in your “real” life? Do you have Jobs, or are you studying, or anything else?


Astrid is still in school, she's in her last year of upper secondary school. I work in a clothing shop and Sara in a kindergarten. None of these jobs are full time, just extra because we want to stay flexible and be able to go on tour any time. Our goal is of course to do music full time but as you said it's hard to earn money from your music and hey, you gotta pay the rent somehow (me and Sara live together, we're full time tigers). But I think things will start to happen pretty soon, I can feel it! And then we can quit our jobs and just rock all day and all nite long!


You are still very young and women! Is it hard to become serious in rock business?


It's harder for us than for men because women don't get taken seriously in the music business and often have to fight a lot of prejudice and bullshit. People don't expect much from us because we're young girls but after a live show with Heavy Tiger they have changed their minds and become true believers! We prove them wrong because we are a kickass live act. We're on a mission to show the world that GIRLS GOT BALLS!


Well, I’m also often very skeptic about women bands, but you make a fantastic, groovy sound and I really enjoy your music. I wish you the best for the future, an upsurge to the rockheaven and that you will have fun with your music for a long time!
