MONTE PITTMAN ist vielleicht noch kein sehr geläufiger Name, doch der Amerikaner hat mit "The Power Of Three" nicht nur ein großartiges Album am Start, sondern auch schon mit PRONG Anerkennung ernten können. Überraschend aber, dass der Mann, der ein so heftiges Album veröffentlicht auch für niemand geringeres als MADONNA Gitarre spielt und dieses Instrument ihr auch beibringt.
Wir haben bei Monte mal nachgefragt wie das alles zustande kam.



Hi Monte, wie geht es dir und was tut sich gerade?


Hi! Mir geht es großartig! Ich bin gerade am Weg zurück nach Los Angeles von New York aus. Ich war mit Brian Slagel dort zur Album Promo. Metal Blade hält mich mit Interviews, Presse und Meetings ziemlich auf Trapp.




Gratulation zu deinem neuen und großartigen Album „The Power Of Three“, welches ja erst kürzlich veröffentlicht wurde. Wie fühlst du dich nun mit dem Material darauf, den Reaktionen und wie es allgemein ankommt?


Danke dir! Jeder ist bisher sehr happy mit den Reaktionen. Mehr und mehr Leute entdecken das Album.


Wo siehst du denn die allgemeinen Unterschiede zu den beiden Vorgängern?


Mein erstes Album „The Deepest Dark“ hatte nur eine akustische Gitarre und meine Stimme, so könnte ich das überall wiederholen. „Pain, Love & Destiny“ beinhaltet das selbe Elemente, aber zudem noch Schlagzeug, Bass und Gitarrensoli. Auf die Weise, dass ich alle Songs sofort akustisch spielen könnte. Außerdem öffnete mir dies die Möglichkeit mit Gästen live zu jammen. Darum machte ich auch eine „stripped down“ Akustik EP.




Was sind so deine Einflüsse als Musiker? Ich meine, dass man so viele Arten von Musik und Genres in deiner Musik hört, dass es unmöglich ist diese wirklich zu kategorisieren...


Als ich meine erste Gitarre bekam, kamen gerade Bands wie METALLICA, SLAYER, ANTHRAX, MEGADETH oder TESTAMENT raus. Das wäre der größte Einfluss. Aber auch Gitarrenvirtuosen wie Steve Vai und Joe Satriani. Danach kamen ALICE IN CHAINS, SOUNDGARDEN und diese ganzen Seattle Bands. Natürlich gab es für mich auch PANTERA, SEPULTURA und PRONG. Und ich liebe auch Akustikmusiker wie Neil Young, Nick Drake, Elliott Smith und Ray LaMontagne. Du hast nur eine bestimmte Anzahl an Noten zu spielen, es ist das, was du daraus machst, das dir deinen eigenen Stil gibt.


Du hast neben wirklich heavy klingenden Elementen auch sehr eingängige Parts und Songs auf „The Power Of Three“ – manches davon könnte man fast „Pop“ nennen – denkst du, dass das ein Einfluss davon sein könnte, dass du auch mit berühmten Pop-Musiker zusammengearbeitet hast?


Ich denke, das kommt davon, wie ich als Songwriter gewachsen bin. Offensichtlich hat mich alles was ich zuvor gemacht hat auf eine bestimmte Weise beeinflusst. Ich schreibe manchmal die Songs auf der Akustik-Gitarre, was sehr viel Platz für einen Fokus auf die Melodien lässt.


Was kannst du mir zum Artwork von „The Power Of Three“ erzählen?


Cam Rackman hat es gemacht. Unser gemeinsamer Freund Kevin Wilson hat uns zusammengebracht. Kevin ist Besitzer des Sacred Tattoo in New York und Cam hat dort eine Ausstellung in seiner Gallery gemacht. Als ich das Bild sah, wusste ich, dass das das Cover sein würde. Manchmal weißt du ja noch gar nicht wie das Artwork aussehen soll, bis du das finale Produkt gehört hast.




Wer sind denn deine beiden Mitmusiker auf dem Album – wie bist du zu ihnen gekommen und in welche Beziehung steht ihr zueinander?


Kane Ritchotte spielt die Drums. Er hat bereits auf meinem letzten Album „Pain, Love & Destiny“ gespielt. Noah Shain hat das Album produziert und danach auch Kanes neues Album. Max und Kane sind zusammen aufgewachsen und so hat Max in seiner Band Bass gespielt. Sie nannten Sich VAS DEFRANS! Großartiger Name. So kam Max zu uns und ich hatte somit beide als meine Rhythmus-Sektion. Alex Skolnick (TESTAMENT, Ex-SAVATAGE) hat ein Gastsolo auf „All Is Fair In Love And War“ gespielt. Er hat auch als viertes Mitglied mit uns live gespielt. Und Chris Barnes (SIX FEET UNDER) singt auf demselben Song mit. Chris steigt ein, danach spiele ich ein Solo, dann Alex und dann geht es zum finalen Chorus.


Manche Leute kennen dich vielleicht als ehemaligen PRONG-Gitarristen, aber diese könnten überrascht sein, wenn sie erfahren, dass du auch Gitarrist für MADONNA bist. Wie bist du zu der Ehre gekommen mit ihr zu spielen und wie ist es so mit ihr zu arbeiten bzw. die ganze Produktion – ich meine es ist sicher ganz etwas anderes so eine fette Pop-Show zu machen als einen typischen Metal-Club-Gig?


Es begann damit, dass ich ihr Gitarrenstunden gab. Nach gut einem Monat lud sie mich ein bei einer Show bei David Letterman mitzuspielen. Sie war seit sieben Jahren nicht mehr auf Tour und wollte eine neue starten. So hat sie mich dann gefragt, ob ich für sie Gitarre spielen will – und ich sagte „Yes!“




Ist es wahr, dass sie dank dir einen PANTERA Song live performt hat?


Ich habe ihr das Main-Riff von „A New Level“ beigebracht und sie liebte es einfach diesen Song zu spielen.


Wirst du das neue Album auf die Bühne bringen? Wann und wo könnten wir dich vielleicht bald sehen?


Ich arbeite daran so viele Shows wie möglich zu buchen. Wir spielen am Whisky-A-Go_Go im Februar und einige weitere Termine sind am finalisieren. Im März geht es nach Texas und die Leute werden auch schon vertraut mit dem neuen heavy Material.


Warum hast du eigentlich ein Solo-Projekt statt einer typischen Band gestartet?


Ich habe versucht eine Band zu starten, aber es kann sehr schwer sein alle Leute zusammen zu bekommen. Das habe ich zuvor schon gemacht und fand die besten Musiker die ich kannte. Das Problem dabei ist aber, dass die besten Musiker immer etwas am Laufen haben. Darum startete ich Akustik-Shows. Ich will einfach rausgehen und spielen. Der Cat Club in LA gab mir eine Fixstelle und so begann alles. Als ich bessere Spielzeiten bekam, holte ich mir einen Bassisten und einen Drummer um es spannender zu machen. Alles wurde von da an aufgebaut. Das Album das nach „The Power Of Three“ kommt, wird dir das Gesicht heruntersägen! Ich werde es weiter wachsen lassen.


Was kommt für dich als nächstes – gibt es noch weitere Arbeiten, Projekte und Bands für dich?


Meine „Band“ MONTE PITTMAN ist das Einzige was ich mache. Ich versuche Shows zu bekommen und mache alles was ich nur kann für diese Band. Vielleicht mache ich gleich das nächste Album. MADONNA wird sicher auch bald wieder auf Tour gehen. MADONNA und ich spielten kürzlich mit MILEY CYRUS bei ihrem MTV-Unplugged. Ich konnte mir nie vorstellen so etwas zu machen. Es war eigentlich eine großartige Erfahrung. Ihre Band war sehr cool und man konnte super mit ihnen arbeiten. Das war aber auch das einzige was ich außerhalb der „The Power Of Three“ Promo gemacht habe.

Hi Monte, how are you doing and what´s going on at the moment?


Hi! I’m doing great! On my way back to Los Angeles from New York. Brian Slagel and I were there for album promo. Metal Blade has been keeping me very busy with interviews, press, & meetings.



Congratulations to your new great album “The Power Of Three”, which was released a few weeks ago. How do you feel now with the material and the reactions and so on?


Thank you! Everyone has been very happy with the response so far. More and more people are finding out about it every day.


Where do you see the main differences in comparison to your previous records?


My first album, “The Deepest Dark”, only has acoustic guitar and vocals so I could recreate that anywhere. “Pain, Love, & Destiny” has that same element but with drums, bass, & guitar solos. That way, I could just play the songs acoustic if needed. Also, it opens the door for having guests jam with us live. I also made a stripped down acoustic EP.


What are your influences as a musician? I mean, there are so many kinds of music and genres in your songs, it´s almost impossible to categorize your sound...


When I got my first guitar Metallica, Slayer, Anthrax, Megadeth, Testament, and bands like that were just coming out. That would be the biggest influence. Also, guitar virtuosos like Steve Vai and Joe Satriani. Then you had Alice In Chains, Soundgarden, and all the Seattle bands. You also had Pantera, Sepultura, and Prong. I also love acoustic music like Neil Young, Nick Drake, Elliott Smith, and Ray LaMontagne. You’ve only got so many notes to play. It’s what you put behind them that gives it the different style.



You have besides the really heavy stuff also really catchy parts and songs on “The Power Of Three” – some stuff could almost be called “pop” – do you think that it is an influence, because you also work with pop-musicians?

think that comes from how I’ve grown as a songwriter. Obviously, anything I’ve done before rubbed off on me one way or another. I write on the acoustic sometimes and that leaves room to really focus on the melody.


What can you tell me about the artwork of “The Power Of Three”?


Cam Rackam made it. Our mutual friend, Kevin Wilson, put us together. Kevin owns Sacred Tattoo in New York and Cam was doing an art exhibit in his gallery. When I saw it I just knew that was the cover. Sometimes you don’t know what the artwork should be until after you hear the final product.



Who are the other musicians on the record – how did you find them and in which relation are you with them?


Kane Ritchotte plays drums. He played on my last album, “Pain, Love, & Destiny”. Noah Shain produced that album and he was going to produce Kane’s band’s album after me. Max and Kane grew up playing together and Max was the bass player in the same band. They were called Vas DeFrans! Great name. So, Max joined us and I had both of them as my rhythm section. Alex Skolnick did a guest solo on the song “All Is Fair In Love And War”. Alex has played with us live as our 4th member. Chris Barnes does a guest vocal on the same song. Chris comes in, then I do a solo, then Alex does his solo which takes you to the final chorus.



Some people may know you as a former PRONG-guitarist, but they could be surprised, when they hear you are also the guitarist for MADONNA. How did you get the honour to play with her and how is it to work with her and the whole production – i mean, such a big pop-show is definitely something different in comparison to a metal-gig.


I started giving her guitar lessons. About a month after she started taking lessons, she invited me to play with her on David Letterman. She hadn’t toured in 7 years and was going to go on tour again. She asked if I wanted to play guitar for her and I said “yes”.


Is it true that she played a PANTERA song live because of your suggestion?


I had taught her the main riff to “A New Level” and she loved playing it.



Will you bring out your new album on stage? When and where can we see you this year?


I’m working on booking as many shows as I can now. We’re playing The Whisky-A-Go-Go on February 22 and I’m finalizing dates after that now. We’ll be heading to Texas in March. People are just getting familiar with the new heavy material.


Why did you decide to start a solo-project instead of a typical band?


I’ve tried starting a band but it can be difficult getting everyone together. I did this before and found some of the best musicians I knew. The problem with that is the best musicians always have something going on. That’s why I started doing acoustic shows. I just want to go out there and play. The Cat Club in LA gave me a residency and things started taking off from there. As I got better set times, I added a drummer and bass player to make it more interesting. Everything has been building from there. The album that will follow “The Power Of Three” will saw your face off. I’m going to let it keep growing.



What´s next for you – are there other projects and bands you are working in at the moment?


My band, MONTE PITTMAN, is the only thing I’m doing. I’m lining up shows now and doing everything I can with this. Eventually, I’ll make the next album. Also, Madonna will go on tour again at some point. Madonna and I joined Miley Cyrus on her MTV Unplugged recently. I would have never imagined I would be doing that. It was actually a great experience. Her band were all really cool and great to work with. That’s the only thing I’ve done outside of promoting “The Power Of Three”.
