EXMORTUS sind für mich eine der Thrash Metal-Entdeckungen des Jahres. Zwar ist "Slave To The Sword" bereits das dritte Werk der furiosen Amerikaner, doch die musikalische Weiterentwicklung ist enorm. So war es uns mehr als ein Anliegen mit Gitarrist und Sänger Conan über die Entstehung des Werkes zu plaudern.



Hey Jungs, was tut sich denn zur Zeit bei EXMORTUS?


Wir sind gerade mitten in der Nord-Amerika Tour mit DARK TRANQUILLITY und OMNIUM GATHERUM. Danach werden wir mit LICH KING auf der Ost-Küste touren. Außerdem geht es danach gleich weiter mit einer weiteren Nord-Amerika Tour mit DESTRUCITION und KRISIUN. Wir sind daher sehr aufgeregt!




Gratulation zu euren neuen Album „Slave To The Sword“. Für mich fühlt es sich nach einen großen Schritt nach vorne an was euren Sound betrifft. Wo seht ihr selbst die Unterschiede zu euren vorherigen Werken?


Ein großer Unterschied ist, dass wir alle jetzt sehr gut aufeinander eingespielt sind. Wir verstehen uns untereinander viel besser als mit früheren Mitgliedern und die Zusammenarbeit was Ideen betrifft ist viel effizienter und macht mehr Spaß.


Wie kam die Idee das Album „Slave To The Sword“ zu nennen und was könnt ihr mir zu den Texten sagen?


Mario und ich hingen mal gemeinsam etwas ab und da kam er auf die Idee ein Projekt „Slave To The Sword“ zu nennen. Für uns ist es eine Metapher was unsere Treue zueinander und zur Musik, dem Touren und unserem Lebensstil betrifft. Ich würde sagen ihr lest einfach die Texte und hört sie euch an. Es ist viel interessanter herauszufinden wie ihr die Texte selbst interpretiert.


Wie läuft das Songwriting normalerweise bei euch ab?


Ich schreibe immer Ideen und präsentiere diese dem Rest der Band. Ich erweitere diese dann durch Ideen der anderen oder sie machen das selbst. Mario kommt auch immer mit sehr vielen Ideen und wir bemühen uns sehr wirklich das Beste aus allem, was uns einfällt herauszuholen. Der Input von jedem wird berücksichtigt und wir arbeiten alles zusammen aus.


Was kannst du mir zum Artwork erzählen? Ich mag diesen Old-School-Look!


Ja, wir auch! Phil Lawvere hat großartige Arbeit geleistet. Wir haben ihm nur den Albumtitel gegeben und ein paar Ideen zum Artwork und – e voila! Wir sind wirklich happy mit dem Franzetta-Stil.




Die Songs von „Slave To The Sword“ klingen technisch wirklich nach einer Herausforderung. Wie viel probt ihr bevor ihr eine Tour startet?


Viel von der Musik ist herausfordernd – manchmal frage ich mich selbst: „wie zur Hölle kann ich das spielen?!“ (lacht). Wir versuchen so viel wie möglich zu proben, auch wenn keine Tour ansteht. Einen Sommer, probten wir wirklich jeden einzelnen Tag. Dass wir alle sehr nahe aneinander in derselben Stadt ist wirklich praktisch.


Was sind deine Lieblingssongs auf dem neuen Album und warum?


Da habe ich keinen. Wir investieren sehr viel Zeit und Energie in jeden einzelnen Song, also ist es wirklich schwer einen auszuwählen. Aber wenn ich müsste, würde ich unsere Interpretation von „Moonlight Sonata (Act3)“ wählen, denn es war eine große Herausforderung und wir haben es nicht geschrieben! (lacht)


Wie kam denn die Idee diesen BEETHOVEN Klassiker zu covern und wie schwer war es diesen in euren Sound zu transferieren?


Wir dachten es würde Spaß machen einen klassischen Song zu covern und David schlug dann vor den dritten Akt von BEETHOVENs „Moonlight Sonata“ zu nehmen. Ich liebte Idee und als es soweit war die Parts vom Piano auf die Gitarre zu übersetzen war ich erstaunt wie unorthodox ich meine Picking-Technik wählte, für das schnelle Arpeggio Thema. Ich fürchtete sein Geist würde mich heimsuchen vor lauter Unzufriedenheit mit mir! Abgesehen von der Schwierigkeit war es einfach eine Wucht zu spielen.


Wie würdest du euren Sound beschreiben, wenn du müsstest?


Es ist der Sound eines brüllenden Gewitters, das über alles und jeden hinwegstürmt und keine Überlebenden zurücklässt.


Was sind so eure Einflüsse?


Es gibt so einiges was wir mögen. Im Großen und Ganzen holen wir uns Inspiration von PRIEST, MAIDEN, SABBATH, OZZY usw.


Wann können wir euch live in Europa erwarten?


Hoffentlich kommendes Jahr! Es scheint zu spät um diesen Sommer noch irgendwo mit aufzuspringen.




Was sind so deine Highlights mit EXMORTUS und als Musiker?


Ein Album unter Prosthtic Records zu veröffentlichen und das Touren mit Bands wie DARK TRANQUILLITY, OMNIUM GATHERUM, LICH KING, DESTRUCTION und KRISIUN sind auf jeden Fall Highlights für uns all.

Hey guys, what´s going on in the moment in EXMORTUS?


We're in the middle of touring North America with DARK TRANQULLITY and OMNIUM GATHERUM. Then we tour the U.S. east coast with LICH KING. And we have another North American tour with Destruction and Krisiun right after that. We're so stoked about it all!


Congratulations to your new record “Slave To The Sword”. For me it feels like a big step forward in your sound. What are the differences in comparison to your former records for you?


One big difference is that we are all very in tune with each other. We understand one another a lot more than with the former members and so the collaberating of ideas is more efficient and fun.


How came the idea to call the album “Slave To The Sword” and what can you tell me about the lyrics?


Mario and I were hanging out one day and he brought up the idea of naming a project "Slave to the Sword." For us, it is a metaphor of our sworn fealty to each other, our music and touring lifestyle. I'd say just read and listen. It would be more interesting to know how you interpret the lyrics yourself.


How is the usual procedure of creating songs in the band?


I'm always writing ideas and I present them to the rest of the band. I then focus on expanding on whatever the other members get into or whatever the others expand on themselves. Mario also comes up with a lot and we make an effort to just make the best out of whatever's presented. Everyone's input is valued and we work together.


What can you tell me about the cover artwork? I really like this Old-School-Look!


We do too! Phil Lawvere did a great job. We just told him what the album was gonna be called and a general idea of what we wanted on the cover, and voila! We are very much pleased with the Frazetta approach.


The songs on “Slave To The Sword” are sounding technically very challenging. How much do you rehearse the songs before starting a tour?


A lot of the music is challenging; sometimes I ask myself "how the hell am I going to play this!?" haha. We try to rehearse as much as possible even if we don't have a tour coming up. One summer, we were able to rehearse everyday. Our living near each other in the same city makes it very convenient.


What’s your favourite song on this album and why?


Don't have one. We spent a lot of time and energy on each song, so it's hard to pick. But I'll choose our interpretation of the "Moonlight Sonata" since it's a great challenge and of course, we didn't write it. haha


How came the idea to record this BEETHOVEN Classic? and how challenging was it to transfer this classical piece of music into this Thrash-monster?


We though it would be fun to cover a classical piece and David suggested to do the third movement of Beethoven's "Moonlight Sonata." I loved the idea and when it came down to translating from piano to guitar I was overwhelmed at how unorthodox I chose my picking technique for the fast arpeggio theme. I dread that his ghost will haunt me out of disatisfaction! Regardless of the difficulty, it is an absolute blast to play.


How would you now describe your sound if you had to?


It is the sound of a roaring tempest approaching, storming over all in its path, leaving no survivors in its wake.


What are your influences?


There are lots of things that we are into. As a whole we draw our inspirations from Priest, Maiden, Sabbath, Ozzy, etc...


When can we expect to see you in Europe on the stages?


Hopefully next year! It seems too late to jump on anything this summer.


What are your highlights to this date with EXMORTUS and as a musician?


Releasing an album under Prosthetic and touring with Dark Tranquillity, Omnium Gatherum, Lich King, Destruction and Krisiun are highlights for all for us.
