Gerade eben haben die Heavy Metaller NASHVILLE PUSSY ihr neues Studioalbum "Up The Dosage" auf den Markt geworfen (Earshot-Review: zu "Up The Dosage" ), schon starten sie den ersten Teil ihrer Headliner Europatournee, die sie leider (noch) nicht nach Österreich führt. Die energiegeladene Truppe, rund um Fronter und Bandgründer Blaine Cartwright und Gitarristin und zugleich Ehefrau des Sängers Ruyter Suys, die für ihre sehr freizügigen Bühnenoutfits bekannt ist, lässt es live auf der Bühne immer richtig krachen und garantiert Partystimmung par excellence. Ebenso machten sehr interessante Songtitel wie "Rub It To Death", "Hooray For Cocaine, Hooray For Tennessee" oder "The South´s Too Fat To Rise Again" neugierig, wer denn da der kreative Kopf der Bande ist.
Trotz Tourvorbereitungen erklärte sich Bassistin Bonnie Buitrago dazu bereit, sich von uns löchern zu lassen und wir bekamen einen kleinen Einblick ins NASHVILLE PUSSY-Leben.


Hey Bonnie, wie geht’s dir im Moment, eure Europatournee startet ja am 30. Jänner, bist du nervös oder so erfahren, dass dich nichts mehr aus der Ruhe bringen kann?


Ich werde nie nervös! Ich bin aufgeregt und freue mich die Shows zu rocken! Vor allem Europa. Es ist immer ein Hammer hier zu touren. Das einzige Mal, wo die Band nervös und aufgeregt war, war unsere Kick off Show mit ZZ TOP in den Staaten! Das war im Fox Theater in Bakersfield (CA) und es war eine ausverkaufte Show. Es war ganz verrückt – beim Soundcheck drehte ich mich um und Billy Gibbons stand hinter mir ganz lässig an den Lautsprecher angelehnt und sah mir zu! Dann kam er zu mir und sagte mir, dass ich großartig geklungen habe! Das war für mich das ultimative Kompliment – hey Mann, das hat mich umgehauen! Das war eine epische Nacht für uns. Die ZZ TOP-Tour waren sicher die coolsten zwei Wochen unseres Lebens.




Ich spiele eure Musik gerne auf Partys, ich mag die spezielle Stimmung, die davon ausgeht. Was magst du am meisten an eurer Musik und vor allem an eurem neuen Album? Was macht es so speziell und warum sollten es unsere Leser kaufen?


Ich denke, dass es eine großartige Kombination aus der Punk Rock Energie der früheren NASHVILLE PUSSY-Tagen und großen Rock’n’Roll Hymnen und wir haben mit diesem Album auch ganz neue Pfade beschritten. Dudelsack? Sicher! Piano? Orgel? Ja klar! Mandoline? Du hast es erfasst! Ganz zu schweigen von der großartigen Leistung auf diesem Album.


Wenn man sich eure Musik anhört und Songtitel wie „The South’s Too Fat To Rise Again“ oder ähnliches liest, kommt es mir vor, als ob ihr ne lustige Truppe wärt und euch selbst nicht ganz so ernst nehmt. Stimmt das?


Blaine ist ein witziger Motherfucker. Seine Songtexte sind immer sehr unterhaltend und sprechen Bände! Sie bringen einen einfach zum Lachen!


Wer von euch schreibt die Texte und wer die Musik? Oder macht ihr alles gemeinsam?


Blaine schreibt die Lyrics – obwohl auf „Up The Dosage“ Mr. Eddie Spaghetti von den SUPERSUCKERS ein paar Texte beigesteuert und an den Songarrangements mit Blaine gearbeitet hat. Ruyter schrieb auf dem Album die Musik zu „Rub It To Death“ und „White And Loud“. Im Studio haben wir live miteinander gejammed und an ein paar Arrangements gearbeitet und dann aufgenommen.




Welche Bands nennt ihr als eure Einflüsse und was ist deine Lieblingsband?


Ich muss sagen, dass BLACK SABBATH und THE CRAMPS meine Lieblingsbands sind. Ich bin eindeutig beeinflusst von SoCal Punk Bass – AGENT ORANGE, ADOLESCENTS, D.I., aber ich mag ganz bunt gemischte Sachen, auch eine Menge Stoner, Surf und Classic Rock… Blues und Old School Thrash!


Magst du es auf Tour zu sein? Gibt es Situationen die du sehr gerne oder auch überhaupt nicht magst?


Ich lebe dafür zu touren! Bevor ich Teil von NASHVILLE PUSSY wurde, tourte ich alleine in einem alten Van, den ich gekauft hatte und suchte mir selbst Auftrittmöglichkeiten – sozusagen Punk Rock im Do-it-yourself-Style. Die Welt zu erkunden und dabei zu rocken ist ein wirklich fantastisches Leben.


Ihr spielt 22 Shows in Europa, plant ihr noch mehr?


Klar! Wir kehren ein paar Wochen in die Staaten zurück, kommen dann aber wieder nach Europa um mehr zu spielen. Fallen in ein paar Länder ein, in denen wir bei der ersten Tour noch nicht gespielt haben.


Was passiert die letzten fünf Minuten vor einer Show Backstage? Gibt es irgend ein besonderes Ritual?


Whiskeyshots, herumhüpfen, summen und aufwärmen!




Gibt’s irgendwelche lustigen oder außergewöhnlichen NASHVILLE PUSSY-Tourstories?


Als ich die Band das erste Mal traf, waren sie auf ihrer allerersten Tournee an der Westküste. Ich war damals noch in der High School. Ich und Ruyter haben uns zu diesem Zeitpunkt schon regelmäßig Briefe geschrieben – das war in den späten 90ern – da haben sich die Leute noch Briefe geschrieben! haha! Naja, auf jeden Fall war ich noch zu jung um in die Bars zu kommen, in denen die Band gespielt hat. Ruyter musste oft die Türsteher bezirzen, damit sie mich reinließen und ich die Show sehen konnte. Manchmal saß ich auf der Bühne hinter den Verstärkern und schaute zu. Dann als ich 21 Jahre war verließ Tracy die Band und ich spielte Bass bei der Band vor. Ich war zwar noch zu niedlich und unschuldig zu dieser Zeit und hatte noch zu wenig Erfahrung, aber ich konnte gut spielen. Und mit den Jahren zahlte ich mein Lehrgeld, arbeitete wirklich hart und sammelte viel Studio- und Tourerfahrung.


Was sind die Pläne nach der Tour? Macht ihr euch sofort an die Arbeit für ein neues Album oder geht mal auf Urlaub und relaxt?


Wie schon vorher erwähnt, machen wir eine kurze Pause und kommen dann wieder nach Europa. Wir werden dieses Jahr rund um die ganze Welt touren! Australien, Jaban, China, Kanada und natürlich ganz viel in den Staaten und dann noch mehr Europa!




Gibt’s noch irgendwas, das du euren österreichischen Fans sagen willst?


Ich freue mich darauf, wieder mal Österreich zu rocken! Wir waren seit 2012 nicht mehr da und ich kann mich noch erinnern, dass die Show damals ziemlichen Spaß gemacht hat. Es wird ein Hammer werden, die neuen Sachen zum ersten Mal für euch zu spielen!

So how are you at the moment, your European tour is starting in 3 days, are you nervous or are you very well experienced and nothing bothers anymore? ;)


I never get nervous! I get excited and look forward to rocking the shows! Europe especially. It's always a blast touring out here. I'd say the one time the whole band was nervously excited was our kick off show with ZZ TOP in the states! It was at the Fox Theatre in Bakersfield, California and it was a sold out show. It was crazy- at sound check I turned around and Billy Gibbons was standing there leaning on a speaker cab watching me! He walked right up to me and said my tone was amazing! The was ultimate compliment- man I was floored! That was an epic night for us. It was the coolest 2 weeks of our lives on that ZZ TOP tour for sure.


I really like to play your music on parties, I like the special mood which comes from your music. What do you like most from your music and especially the new record? What makes it special and why should our readers buy it?


I think it's a great combination of the punk rock energy from the early days of Nashville Pussy, and the big rock n' roll anthems, plus we hit new territory on this one. Bagpipes? Sure! Piano? Organ? Of course! Mandolin- you got it! Not to mention it’s got some great performances on this album.


If you listen do the music and read the titles like "The South`s Too Fat To Rise Again" or something it seems to me, you are very funny guys and you aren't taking yourself too serious. Am I right?


Blaine is one funny motherfucker. His lyrics are always entertaining and good for speaking volumes and also making you laugh!


Who among you writes the lyrics and who does the music? Or are you doing everything all together?


Blaine writes the lyrics- although on Up The Dosage, Mr. Eddie Spaghetti of Supersuckers penned some lyrics and worked on song arrangements with Blaine. Ruyter wrote the music to Rub It To Death and White and Loud. In the studio we jammed live together and worked on some more arrangements and got to recording!


Which bands influences you? What is your favourite band?


I'd have to say Black Sabbath and The Cramps are my favorite bands. I definitely influenced by a lot of SoCal punk bass- Agent Orange, Adolescents, D.I., but I'm all over the place. I dig a lot of stoner, surf, and classic rock....blues and old school thrash!


Do you like touring? Are there any situations you don't like or like most?


I live for touring! Before I was in Nashville Pussy I was touring everywhere in a van I bought, booking tours myself, punk rock do-it-yourself style. Getting to explore the world and get to rock while doing it is an amazing life.


You are doing 22 shows in Europe, are you planning more?


Yes! We return to the states for a few weeks and then we are back in Europe touring more. Hitting up more countries that we didn't play this first tour.


What happens backstage the last five minutes before a show? Do you have any special ritual?


Shots of whiskey. Hopping around. Humming and warming up!


Were there very funny or special NASHVILLE PUSSY-tour stories?


When I first met Nashville Pussy they were on their very first west coast tour. I was in high school. Me and Ruyter were already writing letters to each other at this point- it was the late 90s- people still wrote letters, haha! Well I was too young to get into the bars the band was playing. Ruyter often had to sweet talk the bouncers to let me in to watch the show. Sometimes I'd watch sitting on the stage behind the amps. By the time I was barely 21 I wound up auditioning to play bass for Nashville Pussy after Tracy had left the band. I was a bit too sweet and innocent and didn't have the experience at the time! I could play well, but it was the years that followed where I paid my dues and worked really hard to establish a lot of studio recording and touring experience.


What are your plans after tour? Are you doing instantly a new record or go on a holiday and relax?


We take a small break and head back to Europe. We are going to tour all over the place this year! Australia, Japan, China, Canada, and of course a lot of United States and more Europe too!


Is there anything you want to say to your Austrian fans?


I look forward to rocking Austria again! We haven't been there since 2012 and I remember that show being a lot of fun. It's gonna be blast rocking the new tunes for the first time for ya'll!
