Die schwedischen Metal Überflieger MUSTASCH überzeugen seit Jahren durch starke Shows und ebenso grandiose Alben. Der große Durchbruch in unseren Breitengraden blieb bisher leider aus. Mit "Thank You For The Demon" haben die Herren ihr wohl abwechslungsreichstes und reifstes Album am Start. Eine gute Ausganssituation um erfolgreich durchzustarten. Wir unterhieltn uns mit Bassist Mats "Stam" Johansson über das Werk und Zukunftspläne:


Hi Stam, gratuliere zum neuen Album „Thank You For The Demon“. Ich bin wirklich vernarrt in dieses und war von dem großen Schritt nach vorne und der großen Abwechslung sehr überrascht. Hattet ihr das zuvor geplant, oder kann man das als eine Art natürliche Entwicklung des Sounds von MUSTASCH bezeichnen?


Ich bin mir nicht sicher ob es ein so großer Schritt nach vorne war im Vergleich zu den vorherigen Alben war, aber vielen Dank für die lobenden Worte! Ich denke, dass wir uns stetig weiterentwickeln, solange wir selbst denken, dass wir in die richtige Richtung gehen – wir können also nur hoffen, dass das Publikum auch Freude daran hat.




Was kannst du mir über den Titel „Thank You For The Demon“ erzählen?
Ich finde es ist ein wirklich starker „Titel“.


Die Texte auf dem Album sind alle autobiografisch, und so natürlich auch der Albumtitel. Ralf wurde als er drei Jahre alt war adoptiert und er wurde sehr streng von seinen Pflegeeltern, die sein musikalisches Talent nicht erkennen wollten, erzogen. Also erreichte er also sehr spät das Hard Rock Genre im Vergleich zu unseren Kollegen, und genau deswegen fühlte Ralf, dass er das Genre sehr hart erforschen musste um seine Ziele zu erreichen. Ein ruheloser Dämon trieb ihn rauf und runter. Somit: Danke Mister Dämon!


Wie entstehen normalerweise Songs in der Band? Ich meine der Release von „Sounds Like Hell, Looks Like Heaven“ ist noch gar nicht so lange her und ihr habt auch einige Tourneen daziwschen gespielt – wann hattet ihr Zeit solch großartige Songs zu schreiben?


Der übliche Prozess ist, dass Ralf ungefähr 90% und David den Rest macht – manchmal liefern sie sogar einen voll durcharrangierten Song, aber meistens helfen wir zusammen um das Material fertig zu arrangieren. Speziell dieses Mal haben wir die Hälfte der Songs im Studio geschrieben und arrangiert. Normalerweise machen wir Demos und proben genügend, dafür war dieses Mal aber einfach zu wenig Zeit. Es war natürlich nicht der optimale Weg zu arbeiten, aber wir sind glücklich, dass das Album wirklich gelungen ist.




Was sind so eure Einflüsse – speziell für dieses Album? Ok, manche Leute vergleichen euch immer wieder mit METALLICA, aber dieses Mal gibt es so viel mehr zu entdecken. Ralf klingt zum Beispiel bei „Feared & Hated“ nach Ronnie James Dio und „All My Life“ klingt wie ein moderner epische LED ZEPPELIN Track, außerdem höre ich BLACK SABBATH und MONSTER MAGNET immer mal wieder raus.


Wir haben nie spezielle Künstler oder Alben von denen wir uns inspirieren lassen. Diese Dinge kommen einfach von dem, was wir über die Jahre hinweg hörten bzw. was wir zur Zeit hören. Ich weiß nicht, ob du es in diesem Album heraushören kannst, aber wir haben in den letzten Jahren sehr viele Film-Soundtracks gehört.


Ich habe nach wie vor viel Spaß mit „I Hate To Dance“ – wie kam die Idee hier industrielle Sounds zu verwenden?


Es begann mit einem Riff, so wie die meisten anderen Songs, aber ich glaube es war David, der mit der Idee für den Disco-Beat kam. Der Rest des Songs kam dann ganz von alleine.


Bei manchen Songs habt ihr bombastische und teils sogar etwas poppige Elemente verwendet. Wie war es für euch neue Sounds zu erforschen und hattet ihr jemals Angst alte Fans zu vergraulen?


Natürlich nicht. Es hatten vom Start der Band an schon das Motto, dass wir nur Dinge spielen, die wir auch spielen wollen. Und wenn es jemand anderes auch mag, dann ist das ein großer Bonus. Du darfst nie Angst davor haben, neues Zeug zu erforschen, oder du wirst in deinen Tracks sterben. Routine kann eine gefährliche Sache sein.




Wann können wir euch auf Tour sehen?


Wir werden mit dem neuen Album in Finnland und Schweden ab Februar eine Tour starten. Danach geht es im Mai nach Zentral-Europa. Wir versuchen da auch noch ein paar Österreich-Gigs reinzuquetschen.

Hi Stam, congratulation to your new album "Thank You For The Demon". I
really love this one and i was also very surprised by this big step you took
forward and the diversity of this record. Did you plan something like this
or was it some kind of natural evolution in the sound of MUSTASCH?


I´m not sure that this album takes it a much bigger step forward compared to
our other ones, but thank you very much! I would like to think that we are
constantly evolving, and as long as we think we are going in the right
direction ourselves, we can only hope that the public enjoys it too.


What can you tell me about the title "Thank You For The Demon" and the
lyrics of this song, and maybe also of a few other songs? I think it´s a
really strong title.


The lyrics on the album are all autobiographic, and so is the album title.
Ralf was adopted when he was only three years old, and he was raised firmly
by strict foster parents who didn´t recognise his usical talents, so he
approached the hard rock genre quite late compared to our colleagues. And
because of this, Ralf felt he had to explore hard rock and work hard to
achieve his goals, a restless demon driving him onwards and upwards. So,
thank you, Mr Demon!


How do you normally create songs in the band? I mean the release of "Sounds
Like Hell, Looks Like Heaven" was not very long ago and you played some
tours in-between. When did you had time to write all this great songs?


The usual process is that Ralf writes about 90% of the music and David does
the rest, and sometimes they deliver a fully arranged song, but most of the
time we all try to help out arranging the material. Especially this time,
since half of the songs were written and arranged in the studio. We usually
make demos and rehearse a good deal before we enter the studio, but there
wasn´t actually enough time for that now. It was of course not the ideal way
to work, so we´re very happy that the album turned out allright.


What are your influences, especially for this album? Ok, some people compare
some of your songs with METALLICA, but on this one i can hear so many more.
I feel Ralf sounds a little bit like Ronnie James Dio on "Feared & Hated"
and "All My Life" sounds like a modern Epic track inspired by LED ZEPPELIN
and there is also some BLACK SABBATH and maybe MONSTER MAGNET...


We never have any special artists or album that we take inspiration from.
Those things comes from what we have listened to throughout the years and
what we hear everyday. I´m not so sure that you can hear it on this album,
but we have in the latter years started to listen to a lot of movie scores.


I still have much fun with "I Hate To Dance" how came the idea to use
industrial sounds for this song?


It started out with a riff like almost all the other songs, but I think it
was David who came up with the idea with the disco beat, and then the rest
of the song practically formed itself.


On some songs you used some bombastic and also a few pop-elements. How was
it for you to explore new sounds and are you afraid of scaring of old fans?


Of course, not. We´ve had the motto right from the start of the band, that
we would only play the stuff that we like to play. And, if someone else
likes our music too, then that is a great bonus. You must never be afraid
too explore new stuff, or else you will stop dead in your tracks. Routine
can be a dangerous thing.


When can we expect to see you on tour again?


We are touring the new album in Finland and Sweden in February and March,
and after that we´re going to central Europe in May, and on that tour we
will try to squeeze in a few Austrian shows.
