ISKALD ist eine Melodic Black Metal Band aus Norwegen. Im Prinzip ist es ein Zwei-Mann-Projekt von Simon Larsen und Aage André Krekling, aber sie spielen auch Livekonzerte und dabei werden sie von zwei weiteren Musikern unterstützt
Am 17.1.2014 erschien ihr neuestes Werk, das den Titel „Nedom Og Nord“ trägt und im Zuge dessen hatte ich die Gelegenheit, Simon Larsen ein paar Fragen zu stellen:


Bitte stellt euch selbst ein bisschen vor. Ich weiß, dass euch viele Leute kennen, aber es wäre interessant für die anderen.


Wir sind ISKALD aus dem fernen Norden in Norwegen und wir begannen mit der Band im Jahre 2005. Wir haben als typische Norwegische Black Metal Band begonnen, aber als wir uns weiterentwickelten, fanden wir so nach und nach unseren eigenen Stil, bei dem wir die Black Metal Atmosphäre mit einem massiven und epischen Sound kombinieren. Wir konzentrieren uns auch sehr stark auf Melodien und Melancholie, also wenn das für jemanden interessant ist, dann ist ISKALD eine Band, in die sie hineinhören sollten.




Ihr veröffentlicht bald ein neues Album. Wie lange habt ihr daran gearbeitet?


Einer der Songs (Iskald) war bereits für "The Sun I Carried Alone" geplant, das wir im Jahr 2010 veröffentlicht haben. Er hätte aber nicht zu dem Album gepasst, weil er nicht das gleiche Feeling wie die anderen Songs hatte. Also, wenn wir diesen Song dazuzählen, haben wir seit drei Jahren daran gearbeitet. Aber in Wirklichkeit haben wir mit diesem Album Ende 2012 begonnen, denn zu dieser Zeit hatten wir genug Ideen und Material zusammen, um mit der Komposition für das neue Album zu beginnen. Die Aufnahmen begannen im September und dauerten fast bis November und ist mit Abstand die längste Zeit, die wir je gebraucht haben, um ein Album aufzunehmen.


Ich habe mir das neue Album angehört und es ist sehr abwechslungsreich. Bevor ich es hörte, dachte ich, ihr seid eins reine Melodic Black Metal-Band, aber ihr spielt auch andere Stile. Ist das euer Weg, euch von anderen Bands zu unterscheiden?


Ja, wie gesagt, wir begannen eher als typische Black Metal-Band, aber wir haben es geschafft, unseren eigenen Stil zu finden, in dem wir andere Elemente in die Musik bringen. Wir hören eine Menge von verschiedenen Genres, tatsächlich fast keinen Black Metal, und ihr solltet in der Lage sein, das in unseren Songs zu hören. Wir versuchen nicht, etwas Besonderes zu sein, wir machen nur die Musik, die sich am Natürlichsten für uns anfühlt.


Was erwartet ihr vom neuen Album?


Hoffentlich wird uns noch weiter bringen in unserer Karriere, mit mehr Touren und Festivalengagements. Vielleicht sind wir dann in der Lage, ein fünftes Album zu veröffentlichen. Das Feedback war bisher großartig, so dass wir das Gefühl haben, dass der Fortschritt bis jetzt nicht besser sein hätte können. Lasst uns hoffen, dass es so weitergeht…




Wo findet ihr eure Inspiration?


Es ist wirklich schwer zu sagen. Ich glaube, ich finde die Inspiration nur durch das Erleben meines täglichen Lebens. Hineinhörend in alle Arten von Musik und Sounds sowie in die schöne Natur, die wir hier in Nordnorwegen haben mit seinen kalten Wintern und Stürmen. Früher hörte ich viel Musik, um Inspirationen zu bekommen, aber für unsere letzten beiden Alben habe ich überhaupt nicht auf das gehört, was andere Musiker gemacht haben. Die Musik kam geradewegs von selbst, als ich mich hinsetzte und auf meine Aufgabe konzentrierte.


Ihr habt die selbe Konstellation wie SATYRICON – Gitarrist und Drummer! Ist das ein sehr effektiver Weg um neue Songs zu kreieren?


Wir begannen als Drei-Mann-Band, aber als wir unseren Bassisten verloren hatten, haben wir herausgefunden, dass niemand jemals in der gleichen Art und Weise wie er dazu beitragen könnte und das ist der Grund, warum nur ich und Aage übrig sind. Wir haben Live-Musiker, aber die sind an der Komposition der Musik nicht beteiligt, weil zu viele Köche den Brei verderben. Wir alle haben unsere eigene Definition von toller Musik, so dass ich denke, wir würden nie zu einer Einigung kommen.


Gibt es gute Verbindungen zwischen den norwegischen Bands?


Ja, gibt es, zumindest, wie wir sie wahrnehmen. Wir leben im Norden von Norwegen, und es ist eine sehr kleine Szene hier, es ist schwer, aus unserer Sicht zu erzählen. Aber wenn wir zusammen mit anderen norwegischen Bands spielen, gibt es immer einen freundlichen Umgangston.




Mögt ihr es live zu spielen?


Wir genießen es Live-Shows spielen, weil es ein tolles Gefühl ist, die Musik, an der wir so lange gearbeitet haben vorzutragen. Es ist auch die beste Werbung, die eine Band bekommen kann. Wir reisen gern herum, Fans zu treffen und mit ihnen etwas zu trinken, also wie könnte man das nicht mögen?


In den letzten Jahren habt ihr nur in Norwegen gespielt. Warum?


Wir haben wirklich hart an dem neuen Album gearbeitet und in einem Prozess wie diesem, spielen wir in der Regel keine Live-Shows. Aber als wir die Möglichkeit bekamen, am Inferno-Festival zu spielen, mussten wir einfach ja sagen!


Dieses Jahr werdet ihr eine große Tour durch Europa spielen. Was erwartet ihr euch von dieser Tour?


Wir haben keine speziellen Erwartungen an diese Tour. Wir nehmen in der Regel Dinge, wie sie auf uns zu kommen, denn wir wurden früher schon einmal enttäuscht. Aber natürlich freuen wir uns auf diese Tour! Hoffentlich werden wir für ein großes Publikum zu spielen sodass mehr Menschen ihre Augen und Ohren für ISKALD öffnen werden.

ISKALD is a Melodic Black Metal band from Norway. In principle, it is a two-man project by Simon Larsen and Aage André Krekling, but they also play live concerts, where they are supported by two other musicians
On 17.1.2014 her latest Album was released, which is entitled "Nedom Og North" and now I had the opportunity, to ask a few questions to Simon Larsen:


Please introduce yourself a little bit! I know, lots of people know you, but it would be interesting for the other ones.


We are Iskald from far north in Norway, and we started the band back in 2005. We started out as a typical Norwegian black metal band, but as we developed, we slowly found our own style, where we combined black metal atmosphere, with a massive and epic sound. Also we focus very much on melodies and melancholy, so if this sounds interesting, Iskald might be an interesting band to check out.


You will soon release a new album! How long did you work at this?


One of the songs (Iskald) was ready for “The Sun I Carried Alone” which we recorded in 2010. It never made it to the album though, because it didn’t have the same feeling as the other songs. So if you include that song, we have been working with it for 3 years. But we really started working with this album by the end of 2012, because by that time we had enough ideas and material to start composing the new album. The recording started in September and lasted almost out November, and is by far the most time we’ve ever used to record an album.


I listened to your new album and it is very varied. Before I heard it, I thought, you are a pure Melodic Black Metal Band, but you play also other styles. Is this your way to be different to other bands?


Yes, as I mentioned, we started out as more of a typical black metal band, but we have managed to find our own style as we are bringing in other elements to the music. We listen to a lot of different genres, almost no black metal at all actually, and you should be able to hear that in our songs. We are not trying to be something special, we just create the music that feels the most natural for us.


What do you expect from the new album?


Hopefully this one will bring us even further in our career, with more tours, and festival jobs. Maybe even we will be able to release a fifth album. The feedback so far has been great, so we feel that the progress until now couldn’t have been better. Let’s hope it will continue like this…


Where do you find your inspiration?


It’s really hard to tell. I guess I find the inspiration just through living my daily life. Listening to all kinds of music and sound as well as the beautiful nature we have here in north of Norway with its cold winters and storms. Earlier I listened to lots of music to get inspiration, but for our two last albums I haven’t focused at all on what other musicians have come up with. The music just came by itself as I sat down and focused on my task.


You have the same constellation like SATYRICON – guitarist and drummer. Is this a very effective way to create new songs?


We started out as a three man band, but when we lost our bassist, we figured out that no-one could ever contribute in the same way as he did, so that’s why only I and Aage are left. We got live-musicians, but they do not take part in the composing of music, because too many cooks spoil the broth. We all have our own definition of awesome music, so I guess we would never come to an agreement.


Are there good connections between the Norwegian bands?


Yeah, there is, at least how we perceive it. As we live in the north of Norway and there is a very small scene here, it’s hard to tell from our point of view. But when we play along with other Norwegian bands, there is always a friendly tone.


Do you like to play live?


We really enjoy to play live shows because it feels great to perform music that we have been working on for so long. Also it’s the best promotion a band can get. We enjoy traveling around, meeting fans and having a drink, so what is there not to like?


Last years you were only playing live in Norway. Why?


We were working really hard on the new album, and in a process like that, we usually don’t do any live shows. But when we were able to play at the Inferno Festival, we had to say yes!


This year you will play a big tour through Europe. What do you expect from this tour?


We don’t have any specific expectations for this tour. We usually take things as they come for us, because we have been disappointed earlier. But of course, we are looking forward to the tour! Hopefully we will play for big audiences and more people will open their eyes and ears for Iskald.
