Anlässlich des Konzertes der Norwegischen Black Metal Band SATYRICON am 1.12.2013 in der Arena Wien hatte ich die Gelegenheit, ein Gespräch mit einem Teil des kongenialen Duos „Satyr“ und „Frost“, das im Prinzip SATYRICON ausmacht, dem Drummer „Frost“ zu sprechen. Bei angenehmem Betriebsklima bekamen wir sehr ausführliche Antworten zu hören.


Hallo! Nett dich zu treffen! Ich freue mich sehr, dass ich euch heute wieder einmal in Wien sehen kann und ich bin sehr glücklich, dass ich die Möglichkeit habe, dir ein paar Fragen zu stellen.

Warum habt ihr in den letzten drei Jahren so wenige Konzerte gespielt? Das letzte Mal, dass ich euch gesehen habe, war beim Tuska Open Air in Helsinki 2010! Habt ihr die ganze Zeit am neuen Album gearbeitet oder gab es andere Gründe?




Ja, wir haben seit etwa zwei Jahren an dem neuen Album gearbeitet, und so war es uns nicht möglich, in dieser Zeit viel live zu spielen. Wir haben jede Woche 4, 5 oder 6 volle Arbeitstage gearbeitet und wir haben viel gejammt um neues Material zu finden. WIr haben an diesem Album sehr intensiv gearbeitet, damit es so wird wie es ist. Wir trafen uns im Grunde jeden Tag, auf der Suche nach neuen Ideen. Diese Zeit war im Prinzip für Satyr und mich. Und es gab auch mal Gitarren-und Cellospieler um Satyrs Ideen auszuprobieren. Satyr war auch auf der Suche nach neuen Themen, dann nahm er die Gitarre und wartete auf die Inspiration. Wenn die Ideen so nach und nach kamen, war es Zeit, sie mit der Band auszuprobieren und herauszufinden, wie es in verschiedenen Umgebungen klingt. Das war sehr nützlich. Es war harte Arbeit, aber ich denke, dass sie sich für das Ergebnis wirklich gelohnt hat.


Wie waren die Reaktionen auf das neue Album?


Die Reaktionen waren sehr unterschiedlich. Einige sehen wir erst jetzt, wo wir mit dem neuen Album auf Tour sind. Das Publikum reagiert sehr gut auf die neuen Songs. Das ist wichtiger für uns als CD-Bewertungen in Musik-Magazinen. Wir sind aber nicht die ganze Zeit auf der Suche nach Bewertungen des Albums. Die meisten von ihnen sind sehr gut, aber es gibt auch Journalisten, die das neue Album ablehnen. Aber dies ist ein Album, das muss man zehn, zwanzig oder dreißig Mal hören, bevor es wirklich verinnerlicht wird. Die meisten Journalisten haben wenig Zeit für Bewertungen. Sie haben vielleicht 100 Alben pro Woche, um darüber zu schreiben. So verstehe ich, dass sie nicht erkennen, wenn sie ein besonderes Album vor sich haben. Aber für uns sind nur die Reaktionen der Fans und die Erfahrungen jedes Abends auf Tour wichtig, das ist das einzige, was zählt.


Bei dieser Tour spielt ihr ca. 40 Konzerte ohne größere Unterbrechungen. Ist das nicht zu anstrengend für euch?


Die Tour verlangt uns alles ab. Ich denke aber, gerade die Sänger-Situation von Satyr braucht viel Training auf einer so langen Tour. Es ist eine andere Situation, als 3-4 Shows zu spielen. Er muss immer auf das Training und die Erhaltung seiner Stimme achten. Er ist ein Sänger, der mit klarer Stimme singt, und ich denke, am meisten leidet Satyr unter diesen strengen Auflagen. Es könnte ja jederzeit passieren, dass er seine Stimme verliert. Das wäre das Ende der Tour. Die anderen in der Band haben mehr Möglichkeiten, um die Anstrengungen der Tour zu kompensieren.




Ist es einfacher mit nur einem Bandkollegen zu arbeiten, wie das bei euch der Fall ist?



Ich denke, das hat etwas mit Erfahrung und Kontrolle zu tun. Satyr ist meiner Meinung nach ein fantastischer Komponist, so eine Art MOZART im Black Metal Genre. Für mich ist er ein fantastischer Komponist, mit einem fantastischen Einblick in die Gesamtheit der Arbeit. Er überlegt sich genau den Einsatz jedes Instruments um den Sound zu schaffen, den er sich vorstellt. Das macht es unmöglich, auch die Meinungen von anderen Leuten einfließen zu lassen. Auch bei MOZART wäre es unmöglich gewesen, dass sich jemand in seine Kompositionen eingemischt hätte. Und so ist es bei SATYRICON, dass sich niemand in die genialen Ideen von Satyr einmischt. Mein Part dabei ist, ihn zu unterstützen und es hilft ihm sehr, einen Drummer an seiner Seite zu haben, während er Gitarre spielt. Gemeinsam erstellen wir musikalische Bilder und erproben deren Wirkung. Wir haben die Erfahrung gemacht, dass es zu zweit am besten funktioniert, die musikalischen Ideen Satyrs umzusetzen.




Magst du es live zu spielen?


Ja, ich spiele sehr gerne live. Es ist manchmal eine sehr anspruchsvolle Aufgabe und eine sehr große Anstrengung für meine Schultern, aber ich möchte es gar nicht anders haben. Ich mache es gerne, ich mag die Herausforderung ich fühle mich privilegiert in dieser Band zu spielen.


Ihr werdet am „70.000 Tons of Metal“ spielen. Ist das ein besonderes Event für euch?


Ja, das ist es. Wir wissen noch nicht, was uns dabei erwartet auf einem Schiff zu spielen. Auf dieser Tour hier, können wir das besser abschätzen. Das Schiff ist eine neue Erfahrung für uns, aber wo immer wir auch mit SATYRICON hingehen erobern wir den Platz. Aber es ist sicher eine geeignete Umgebung um den Geist von SATYRICON dort entstehen zu lassen. Wir haben noch keine klare Vorstellung davon, was uns erwarten wird aber wir werden sicher das Beste daraus machen.




Wie wichtig ist der Einfluss eurer Heimat auf eure Musik?
Ich war zwei Mal in Oslo und kenne sie ein bisschen. Es ist eine sehr interessante Stadt.


Ich denke, SATYRICON hätte in keinem anderen Land der Welt entstehen können. Ich kann es mir jedenfalls nicht vorstellen. Es liegt an der Mentalität und Kultur unserer Heimat. Aber man kann Oslo nicht mit Norwegen gleich setzen. Es ist eine gewöhnliche Stadt mit vielen Menschen. Es ist nett sich Oslo anzusehen aber nicht dort zu leben. Der Großteil des Landes besteht aus Natur, tiefen Wäldern und spektakulären Fjorden, Bergen usw.
Dieser Geist ist auch in unserer Musik zu finden und auch das Erbe der norwegischen Mentalität. Warum sich in Norwegen die Black-Death-Metal so durchgesetzt hat liegt wahrscheinlich daran, dass außerhalb der Städte die Leute oft isoliert leben und sie wenig Kontakt zu anderen haben. Diese Isolation führt oft zu düsteren Gedanken. Sie haben Angst vor Fremden und wollen lieber alleine bleiben. Diese Situation gibt es bereits seit Jahrhunderten und so hat sich die Abneigung Fremden gegenüber aber auch die Liebe zur Natur in den Norwegern festgesetzt und die Entstehung und Weiterentwicklung des Black-Death-Metal gefördert. Es gibt aber sicher auch noch andere Faktoren, warum sich ausgerechnet in Norwegen diese Musik so durchgesetzt hat.




Und noch eine letzte Frage: Werdet ihr 2014 auf Festivals spielen?


Wir werden auf mehreren Festivals spielen. Auf welchen genau dürfen wir noch nicht sagen, weil da noch immer Verhandlungen mit den Veranstaltern stattfinden, und diese die Bandankündigungen machen wollen. Aber wir freuen uns schon sehr darauf.

On the occasion of the concert of the Norwegian Black Metal Band SATYRICON on 1.12.2013 at the Arena Vienna, I had the opportunity to speak to speak with a part of the congenial duo „Satyr“ and „Frost“, which constitutes SATYRICON in principal , with the drummer "Frost". The interview atmosphere was very pleasant and very detailed he has answered my questions.

Hello! Nice to meet you. I am very happy to see SATYRICON again this evening in Vienna, and I´m very glad, to have the possibility, to ask you some questions.


Why have you played so few concerts in the last three years? Last time I saw you was in Helsinki on Tuska Open Air in 2010. Was you working on the new album or were there other reasons?


Yes, we have been working on the new Album for about two years, and it was not possible to play much live in this period. Every week we were working 4, 5 or 6 full workdays for the new material. For this album, so that it become as it become, it was necessary, to really make this occupation. We met basically every day, jamming for new material. This time was for Satyr and me. And there were also sometimes guitar- and celloplayers to try out Satyrs ideas. Satyr was also looking for new themes, he took the guitar waiting for the inspiration. When the ideas started to come, it was time to try them with the band and to find out, like it sounds in more living environments. This was very beneficial for the new album. It was hard work, but I think, it really gave a good result.


What were the reactions about the new album?


The responses were varied. Something we definitely see now, when we are touring with the new album. The crowds are really going down with the new songs. This is more important for us than CD-Reviews in musicmagazines. We are not all the time searching for reviews. Most of them are very good. But there are also journalists that get in strike with the new album, but this is an album you had to hear ten, twenty or thirty times before it really starts to sink in. Most journalists will have very little time for reviews. They have maybe 100 albums a week to write about them. So I understand, that they doesn´t realize, if there is a special album. But for us is only important the reaction of the fans and experience every night on tour, that is the only one that counts.


On this tour you have to play nearly 40 concerts all over Europe without any breaks. Is this not too heavy for you?


It takes all from us. I think, the vocalist-situation from Satyr needs lots of train on such a long tour. It´s another situation as you play 3-4 shows. He is always training and conserving his voice. He is a vocalist that actually sings with clarity and I think, Satyr most suffered of this regime. There could be now shows, if he looses his voice. The others of the band have more ways, to compensate the efforts of a tour.


Is it more easy to work only with one band colluege, like you do it?


I think this has something to do with experience and control. Satyr is in my opinion a fantastic composer, a kind of MOZART in the Black Metal genre. For me, he is a fantastic composer, with a fantastic insight into the totality of the work. He considers himself just to create the use of each instrument to the sound that he imagines. This makes it impossible to incorporate the opinions of other people. Even with MOZART it would have been impossible that someone had interfered in his compositions. And so it is with SATYRICON, that nobody interferes with the ingenious idea of Satyr. My part of this is to support him and it helps him a lot to have a drummer at his side while he plays guitar. Together we create musical images and test their effects. We have made the experience that it works best for couples to implement the musical ideas Satyrs.


How do you like it, to play live?


Yes, I like it very much to play live. It is sometimes a very demanding task, and a very great effort for my shoulders, but I do not want to have it in another way. I like it, I like the challenge and I feel privileged to play in this band.


You will play at 70.000 tons of metal. Is this a special event for you?


Yes, it is. We still do not know what awaits us there to play on a ship. On this tour here, we can better estimate. The ship is a new experience for us, but wherever we go with SATYRICON we conquer the space. But is it certainly a suitable environment for the Spirit of SATYRICON arise there. We do not have any clear idea of what we can expect, but we will certainly make the most of it.


How important are the influences of your homeland to your music? I was two times in Oslo and know it a little bit. It is a very interesting city.


I think SATYRICON could have originated in any other country in the world. I cannot imagine myself anyway . It is up to the mentality and culture of our homeland. But you cannot compare Oslo with Norway. It is an ordinary city with many people. It's nice to look at but not to live in Oslo.
The majority of the country consists of natural, deep forests and spectacular fjords, mountains , etc.
This spirit is also found in our music and the legacy of the Norwegian mentality. Why in Norway, the Black Death Metal is so successfully probably therefore, that outside the cities , people often live isolated and have only little contact with others. This isolation often leads to gloomy thoughts. They are afraid of strangers and would rather be left alone . This situation has existed for centuries and the aversion towards strangers, so but has also established a love of nature in the Norwegians and encouraged the growth and development of the Black- Death - Metal. But there will be other factors why just in Norway this music has so enforced.


One last question: Will you play on any festivals in 2014?


We will play at several festivals. On what exactly we cannot say yet, because there are still held negotiations with the organizers, and they want to make the band announcements. But we are looking forward to it very much.
