Am 7.11.2013 um 17 Uhr hatte ich das Privileg, Arejay und Josh von der Band HALESTORM vor ihrem Auftritt mit ALTER BRIDGE im Gasometer in Wien zu interviewen. Unglaublich wie nett und bodenständig sie sind wenn man bedenkt, dass sie 2013 den Grammy in der Kategorie Best Hard Rock/Metal Performance gewonnen haben.

So, wie läuft eure Tour?


Josh: Unbeschreiblich! Es macht einfach so viel Spaß. Wir haben in Großbritannien vor 3 Wochen begonnen und es ist einfach toll. Das ist das erste Mal, dass wir mit ALTER BRIDGE in unserer fast 10-jährigen Bandgeschichte gemeinsam touren.
Arejay: Wir kennen sie schon ewig aber das ist das erste Mal. Endlich! Es fühlt sich so an als hätte jeder die ganze Zeit darauf gewartet.


Ist das euer erstes Konzert im Gasometer?


J: Nein, wir haben schon oft im Gasometer gespielt. Ich glaube es ist das dritte oder vierte Mal.
A: Ich glaube wir haben die “Taste Of Chaos”-Tour mit DISTURBED und PAPA ROACH 2010 gemacht.


Euer aktuellstes Album nennt sich “The Strange Case Of” und erschien 2012. Können wir bald ein neues Album erwarten?


J: Ja ihr könnt. Wir schreiben die ganze Zeit.

A: Jetzt gerade auf Tour. Das ganze Album ist fertig, hier oben (deutet auf seinen Kopf). *Allgemeines Lachen*
Wir werden jetzt touren, dann werden wir schreiben, dann werden wir im April wieder touren, dann werden wir aufnehmen und danach wieder touren, touren…




Ich habe auf eurer Website gelesen, dass ihr fast ohne Pause bis Mitte Dezember touren werdet. Das muss richtig anstrengend sein, seit ihr es schon gewöhnt oder macht ihr viel Fitness, um solch eine Tour zu bestehen. Was ist euer Geheimnis?


A: Fitness hilft definitiv um auf der Tour in Form zu bleiben. *Lachen*

J: Touren ist was wir kennen und was wir lieben. Es ist nicht ermüdend, wenn wir das tun, was wir lieben. Jede Nacht ist die beste Nacht.
A: Ich bin körperlich natürlich komplett zerstört nach jeder Tour. Wir lieben es zu performen, wir lieben es live zu spielen und wir lieben es zu reisen. Es ist unsere Droge.



Arejay, du machst ziemlich viele Sticktricks während deiner Liveperformance. Was hat dich dazu bewegt, das in dein Spiel zu integrieren?


A: Oh wirklich ? Ich bemerke das gar nicht. *lacht*


Ja ich habe viele Videos von dir auf Youtube gesehen.


A: Als wir mit dem Touren begonnen haben, spielten wir mit vielen großen Bands, die große Lichtshows, Videowände, Rauch, Bomben und den ganzen Scheiß hatten. Wir hatten nie so etwas. Unsere Liveshow war immer das liebste, was mir gemacht haben und darauf liegt auch heute noch unser Hauptaugenmerk. Wir fokussieren uns richtig auf die Liveshow. Das Ziel war, soviel Energy wie nur möglich ist rauszuholen und es macht auch ziemlich Spaß mit viel Energie zu spielen. Es ist wirklich wie ein Teufelskreis aus Energie mit uns und den Fans.


Ihr habt die Single “Here’s To Us” , mit einem Gastauftitt von SLASH veröffentlicht. Wie seit ihr dazu gekommen ? Habt ihr in einfach angerufen?


*allgemeines Lachen*

A: Er ist einfach unglaublich!
J: Wir haben einige Shows mit ihm und seiner Band gespielt. Er ist einfach so eine Ikone, aber wenn du mit ihm sprichst meint er einfach, dass er nur spielen will.
A: Er ist einfach so ein normaler Kerl.
J: Er will einfach nur rocken. Das ist alles, was er will. Wir hatten unglaubliche Shows mit ihm und wir machten “Here’s To Us” und dachten, dass es cool wäre wenn er ein Solo für irgendein Lied von uns machen würde, aber es wurde halt dieser Song. Er sagte kein Problem, solang Lzzy auf seinem nächsten Album singen würde.


Es ist also ein Gefallen für einen Gefallen.


A: Das ist das coole an der Rockwelt. Wir helfen und unterstützen uns gegenseitig. Wir wollten mit “Here’s To Us” ein Lied machen, indem es nicht nur um unsere Band geht, sondern auch um unsere Freunde, die wir während einer Tour begegnen wie z.B. SHINEDOWN, ALTER BRIDGE, JAMES MICHAEL, THEORY OF A DEADMAN, MARIA BRINK. Sie sind mehr als glücklich ein Teil davon zu sein. Das coolste an SLASH ist, das du vergisst mit wem du sprichst, wenn du mit ihm redest. Er ist so cool und bescheiden. Du denkst dir nur: “ICH REDE MIT SLASH, WHAT THE FUCK?”. Wir hatten ein Catering in Amsterdam und SLASH kam in den Raum und wir dachten: “Oh Scheisse, da ist SLASH”. Er wird so respektiert. Und dann kam er mit seiner Platte voll Essen zu unserem Tisch und setzte sich nieder. Er sagte: “Hey Leute, was geht ab? Ich bin SLASH “ und ich erwiderte: “Yeah ich weiß wer du bist, schön dich zu treffen”.




Okay kommen wir zu etwas persönlichem. Was ist die nervigste Eigenschaft jedes Bandmitglieds?


*Denkpause*

J: Scheisse ich weiß nicht. Okay Lzzy… das nervigste…
A: Wir sind eine Familie. Wenn man so nah wie wir miteinander leben hat man schon mal Streitereien, man ist gestresst, weil das Leben hart ist, aber im selben Moment ist es auch das Beste, das wir so eine enge Familie sind. Wir haben Streitereien, wir nerven uns gegenseitig, aber das Beste ist, das wir so zusammengeschweißt als Band sind, das wir das so einfach machen können. Und die Streitereien sind immer nach 5 Minuten vorbei und danach sagen wir: “Wegen was streiten wir uns überhaupt, ich weiß es nicht mehr?“

J: Lzzy wärmt die ganze Zeit ihre Stimme auf und Joe spielt immer seine blöde Gitarre und dann sag ich immer: “Seid endlich leise!”.
A: Und Joe macht immer “rapapapam” (Bass-imitierender-Sound) und ich mach “bradabradabam” (Schlagzeug-imitierender-Sound).
Und dann frage ich: “Wer will ein Bier? Ich liebe euch alle!”


Ich finde es immer interessant, wie Bands ihre Lieder komponieren. Wer schreibt die Riffs, wer die Texte?


J: Lzzy ist der Textschreiber. Wenn wir Ideen, Themen oder Einzeiler haben werfen wir sie auf Lzzy. Normalerweise kommt sie dann zu uns mit einer Melodie oder simplen Ideen eines Liedes und wir bauen es dann gemeinsam auf.

A: Es gibt soviele Wege, es ist nie dasselbe.
J: Manchmal arbeitet sie mit Schreiber. Manchmal hat Joe ein Gitarrenriff, es passiert auf so vielen verschieden Arten. . Wir haben kein richtiges Schema.
A: Nein, haben wir nicht. Wir beendeten unser letztes Konzert der ersten Albumzyklus-Tour und am nächsten Tag flogen wir rauf nach LA. Dort begannen wir mit den Aufnahmen für das zweite Album. Wir hatten einen freien Tag und dann waren wir im Studio. Die meiste Musik wurde von mir, Josh und John geschrieben. Wir drei saßen im Studio zusammen und bauten Songideen auf. Joe kam mit einem Gitarrenriff, ich startete mit einem Beat und Josh machte auch irgendetwas. Es lastete ziemlich viel Druck auf uns, das zweite Album fertig zu stellen aber für unser nächstes nehmen wir uns die Zeit. Wir vier werden uns in unser kleines Apartmentstudio in Nashville einschließen und versuchen gemeinsam zu arbeiten.
J: Yeah, es war jedes Mal anders.


Würdet ihr gerne mit orchestralen oder elektronischen Einflüssen herumexperimentieren? Oder wollt ihr so bleiben wie ihr seit mit Gitarre, Bass, Schlagzeug, Klavier und Gesang?


A: Es hängt davon ab, was uns gerade inspiriert. Wir sind immer so etwas wie eine klassische Rockband gewesen, aber es macht Spaß zu experimentieren. Als wir die Cover-EP (ReAniMate 2.0) aufnahmen, experimentierten wir mit vielen verschiedenen Sounds, verschiedenen Perkussionsinstrumenten herum und wirklich seltsamen Zeugs. Wir machten dieses MARYLIN MANSON Cover (der Song heißt: 1996) und unser Produzent gab mir einen Metalleimer, stellte ein Mikrofon im Raum auf und sagte: “nimm diesen Eimer, wirf ihn auf den Boden, wirf ihn gegen die Wand, trete ihn”. Es machte Spaß.

J: Auf unserer letzten Platte half uns ein Student unseres Produzenten.
A: Lenny!
J: Lenny Skullneck. Er wurde ein guter Freund. Unser Produzent gab ihm ein paar Songideen und er fügte ein paar verschiedene elektronische Ideen hinzu oder schob sogar einige Teile des Songs herum. Er erschuf damit ziemlich interessante Teile, die den ganzen Song zu etwas komplett neuem machten. Das war ziemlich spaßig. Wir dienen in erster Linie dem Song und tun, was das Beste für ihn ist.
A: Wirklich konzentriert.


Habt ihr eine Nachricht an eure Fans?


A: Unsere Fans sind unsere Familie. Danke, dass ihr Teil davon seid.
J: Sie sind wahrhaft die besten Fans. Sie sind so nett zu uns. Eines der dankbarsten Dinge unseres Jobs ist es, wenn man zurück an einem Ort kommt und die Leute singen unsere Lieder, obwohl sie eine andere Sprache sprechen.
A: Das ist so cool!
J: Wir werden unseren Albumzyklus hier in Österreich im April des nächsten Jahres beenden. Wir werden eine Headline-Tour durch Europa und Großbritannien machen.


Wer wird eure Support-Band sein?


J: Ich denke, wir wissen das noch gar nicht.

A: Ich glaube keine ist derweil fix, außer SMOKING HEARTS. Das ist eine Punkband aus Großbritannien. Das Lineup steht noch nicht fest.
J: Danke für eure Unterstützung.
A: Wir sehen uns im April.

How has the tour been so far?


Josh: Amazing! It’s been so much fun. We started in the UK about three weeks ago and it’s just been so great. This is the first time we’ve ever toured with ALTER BRIDGE in ten years as a band.

Arejay: We have known the guys forever but this is our first time touring with them.Finally! So it’s like, everyone has been waiting for it.


Is this your first time in this venue?


J: No, we’ve played in Gasometer a few times. I would say it’s the third or fourth time.
A: I think we did the “Taste of Chaos” tour with DISTURBED and PAPA ROACH back in 2010.


Your latest full length record is called “The Strange Case Of” and was released 2012. Can we expect a new album soon?


J: Yes you can. Yeah, we are writing as we speak.
A: Like even right now on tour. The whole record is done, right up here (points to his head). *Laughter*
Basically we are gonna tour and then we are gonna write and then we are gonna tour again in April and then record and then tour, tour, tour.


I have seen on your website that you will be touring almost nonstop until the middle of December. That must be really exhausting, have you got used it, or are you doing a lot of fitness or what are your secrets?


A: Fitness definitely helps to stay in shape on the road. *Laughing*
J: Touring is what we know and what we love and that’s not tiring if we are doing what we love. It’s fun. It’s the best night every night.
A: I am physically completely destroyed at the end of tour. We love playing shows, we love performing, we love travelling, it’s our drug of choice.


Arejay, you are doing a lot of stick tricks during your life performance. What got you into that to put this in your style of playing?


A: Oh really? I don’t notice. *Laughter*


Yeah I have seen a lot of live videos of you on youtube.


A: When we first started touring we were playing with a lot of bands with like big productions, big light shows, video walls, smoke, bombs and shit. We never had something like that. Part of the objective as a band was to, you know,… our life show was the favorite thing to do, it still is the main thing. We really focus on our life show. The objective was to put out as much energy as possible and then it just was a lot of fun to play with a lot of energy. I get off and this was actually the reason why the song “I Get Off” was written. I get off personally on putting all my energy out there and then having people react and the energy is building in the crowd and then I think it’s me more amped up to bring it even more. It’s really like a vicious circle of energy with us and our fans.


You have released the single “Here’s To Us” with a guest appearance of SLASH. How did you come up with this cooperation? Did you just call him or..?


*Laughter*
A: I mean he is awesome!
J: We have played a few shows with SLASH and his band. He is such an icon but if you talk to him it’s like he just wants to play
A: He is such a normal dude.
J: He just wants to rock. That’s all he wants to do. We had great shows with him and yeah,… we did “Here’s To Us” and thought this would be a really cool thing to have him doing a solo on anyone of our songs but yeah he did this song. He said no problem, he would love to, as long as LZZY sings on his next album.


So it’s a favor for a favor.


A: That’s the cool thing in the rock world. We all help and support each other. When we released “Here’s To Us” we wanted to kinda make it about not just our band, but all the friends we met on tour like SHINEDOWN, ALTER BRIDGE, JAMES MICHAEL, THEORY OF A DEADMAN, MARIA BRINK. They are more than happy to be involved. And the cool thing about SLASH is that you’ll be talking to SLASH and you’ll forget whom you are talking to. He is so fucking cool and humble. You are like “I AM TALKING TO SLASH, WHAT THE FUCK?”. We were eating catering one time in Amsterdam and SLASH walks in and we were just like “oh shit there is SLASH”. He is so well respected. And then he walks over with his plate of food and sits down to our table . He is like “hey guys what’s going on, hey I am SLASH “ and I was like “ yeah I know who you are, nice to meet you”.


Okay now something personal. What is the most annoying and most appreciating attribute of each band member?


*Brainstorming*
J: Shit, I don’t know. Okay Lzzy… most annoying…
A: We are family by now. The most annoying thing is like when you are that close to everybody, you gonna have arguments and quarrels, you get stressed out because it’s a tough life but at the exact same time that’s the best thing about all of us, that we are such a tight family. We’ll have fights, we’ll get annoyed of each other but that’s also the best part that we are so close as a band that we can do that. Fights are always over after 5 minutes and it’s like “what are we fighting about, I don’t know?”.
J: Lzzy warms up all the time and Joe is always playing the stupid guitar and then I always say “SHUT UP, JESUS!”.
A: And Joe is always like “rapapapam” (some bass-imitating sound) and I am like “bradabradabam” (some drums-imitating sound).
And then I ask “who wants a beer? I love you all!”


I am always curious about how bands compose their songs. Who comes up with the riffs, who writes the lyrics…?


J: Lzzy is pretty much the lyric writer. If we ever have any ideas, topics or one-liner we’ll throw it to her. Usually she approaches us with a melody or simple idea of a song and then we build it up together.

A: There are so many ways, it’s never the same.
J: Sometimes she works with writers who shall share ideas with and then we put our twist on it. Sometimes Joe has got a riff to put it in a song, it happens in many ways. We don’t have a set formula.
A: We really don’t. With this last record tough, we finished are last tour of our first album cycle and then the next day we flew up to LA to start working on the next record. So pretty much we have one day off and then we were in the studio. The way a lot of music was written was just me, Joe and Josh. The three of us kinda just sat in the studio and built up an idea of a song. Joe will come up with a riff, I will just start with a beat, Josh will come up with something. There was a lot of pressure recording the second album but with the next one we’re actually taking some time. The four of us will just kinda lock ourselves in our little apartment studio in Nashville and try to work together.
J: Yeah each process has been very different.


Would you like to experiment with maybe orchestral sounds or electronical influences? Or do you just wanna stay as usual with the guitar, bass, drum kit, piano and vocals?


A: It depends on what gets us excited at the time. We have always been like a raw band but it’s fun to experiment around. When we did the cover EP (ReAniMate 2.0), we experimented with a lot of different stuff like a lot of different percussion and weird stuff. We did this MARYLIN MANSON cover (song is called: 1996) and our producer gave me a metal bucket and put a microphone in the room and he said “ take this bucket, throw it on the floor, throw it against the wall, kick it”. It’s fun.
J: On our last record we had a friend who is actually a student of our producer.
A: Lenny!
J: Lenny Skullneck. He became a good friend. Our producer would throw our song ideas like a simple recording towards him and he would add a bunch of different electronic ideas or even kinda move parts of the song. In doing that, he actually created a few little hooks which kinda flipped the whole song around. That was quite fun. We are gonna serve the song whatever that is, we’re gonna do what’s best for the song and hopefully don’t leave any stone unturned.
A: Really focused.


Do you have a final message to your fans?


A: Our fans are our family. Thank you for being a part of it.
J: They are truly just the best fans ever. They are so kind to us. One of the most rewarding things in our job is, to have this momentum going, to be able to come back to a place and see more people who speak different languages but who are singing our songs.
A: That’s so cool.
J: We are ending our album cycle over here next year in April. We are going to do a headline tour through the UK and Europe and then you will be hearing the music from us.


Who will be the support?


J: I don’t think we know yet.
A: I don’t think any of them are final, as far as we know, SMOKING HEARTS is one of them, they are a UK punk band. The lineup isn’t fully finished yet.
