Zwar stiegen Matt Barlow und Freddie Vidales vor einiger Zeit bei ICED EARTH aus, doch entgegen vieler Gerücht, verabschiedeten sich die Herren nicht komplett aus dem Metal Business, sondern formierten sich neu und machen nun gemeinsam mit Van Williams (Ex-NEVERMORE) als ASHES OF ARES die Straßen unsicher. Mit dem selbstbetitelten Debüt "Ashes Of Ares" konnten die Herren schon erste gute Kritiken ernten. Die erste richtige Tour mit POWERWOLF, MAJESTY und BATTLE BEAST wurde für die Amerikaner auch zum Erfolg. In München trafen wir die Band zum gemütlichen Gespräch. Schnell merkten wir wie entspannt und glücklich die Jungs nun mit ihrer neuen Band und den Umständen sind. Aber lest selbst.


Hey Freddie, wie gehts dir?


Freddie Vidales: Großartig, wir hatten heute viel Spaß!




Wie war die Show?


Freddie: Wirklich super…


(Schlagzeuger Van Williams kommt in den Raum)

Freddie: Hey komm her, wir haben gerade mit dem Interview begonnen. Rein mit dir!
Van: Nein, nein… (lacht)


(Nach einer kurzen Vorstellung unsererseits machten wir dann doch mit dem Interview weiter)

Kannst du bitte ein bisschen näher zum Aufnahmegerät rutschen?


Van: Ich habe eine sehr laute Stimme!! (lacht)


So, dann machen wir weiter - wie läuft die Tour für euch soweit?


Freddie: Super, wir werden jeden Tag tighter und hatten sehr viel Spaß, aber morgen ist bereits die letzte Show



Die Tour von POWERWOLF geht ja eigentlich noch weiter, warum springt ihr morgen schon ab?


Freddie: Wir wurden nur für eine halbe Tour eingeladen.




Aber wenn ihr die Chance hättet, die ganze Tour zu spielen…


Freddie: Das kommt darauf an - wer weiß. Es ist unsere erste Tour, wir haben erst ein Album veröffentlich, das ja gerade rausgekommen ist, also haben wir uns gedacht, dass es doch ein bisschen zu früh für eine Tour ist. Es ist darum gut, eine kleine Tour zu haben, weil das Publikum unsere Songs noch nicht so kennt. Vielleicht können wir später wieder eine andere kleine Tour machen.



Ich mag dieses Konzert-Package, weil es sehr abwechslungsreich ist, aber perfekt zueinander passt, da alle Bands einen sehr powervollen Sound haben. Wie sind die Reaktionen des Publikums bis jetzt?


Van: Es sind immer gemischte Reaktionen. Es ist schwer zu beschreiben, die Leute sind hin und wieder sehr ruhig und wenn du sie später triffst, sind sie richtig cool. Es ist verschieden, aber wirklich super.
Freddie: Die Bands kommen untereinander auch wirklich gut aus, wir haben viel Spaß, Spitznamen erfunden und machen zusammen Party.



Es war eine kleine Überraschung, dass ASHES OF ARES mit dir und Matt Barlow ein Album herausbringen - kannst du mir über die Gründung der Band etwas erzählen?


Van: Sicher. Matt und ich… vor langer, langer Zeit… (lacht). Ich traf Matt in den frühen ICED EARTH-Tagen als wir mit NEVRMORE tourten und wir hielten über die Jahre den Kontakt. Eines Tages erzählte er mir, dass er mit Freddie an ein paar Songs arbeitet. Ich hatte Freddie bis zu dem Zeitpunkt noch nie getroffen. Und er meinte, wenn ich Lust hätte, dann könnte ich etwas einspielen. Er hat mir ein paar Demos und gesendet und ich meinte dann, dass ich es cool finde und dass wir das machen. Dann haben wir uns getroffen und zusammen gejammed und ich dachte mir, dass Freddie einfach ein cooler Typ ist, es lief alles wunderbar- drei Schwachköpfe, die zusammen Musik machen. Wir haben einfach damit angefangen, zusammen Musik zu machen und relativ bald hatten wir das gemeinsame Ziel, ein Album zu machen.



Wegen eures Namen - ASHES OF ARES - gibt es da eine tiefere Bedeutung?


Freddie: Matt hatte die Idee mit diesem Namen - Scheiße, einen Namen für eine Band zu finden ist eines der härtesten Sachen der Welt! Uns fiel einfach nichts gutes ein. Matt hatte immer eine gute Connection zu den Fans und sie nannten ihn Ares wegen seiner powervollen Stimme und verglichen ihn mit dem Gott des Krieges. Und “Ashes”... Es geht darum Dinge niederzubrennen. Wir dachten uns einfach, dass sich das gut anhört!




Wie zufrieden seid ihr mit dem Album, den Reaktionen und Kritiken?


Freddie: Mir gehts gut damit.
Van: Ja, ich bin auch ziemlich glücklich.
Freddie: Ich finde, das Beste was man hören kann ist, dass Leute sagen, je öfter sie es sich anhören, umso besser wird es. Ich habe schon mitgekriegt, dass manche beim ersten Mal nicht reingekommen sind, aber wenn sie es sich ein paar Mal angehört haben, haben sie es nicht mehr aus ihren Köpfen gebracht.


Warum habt ihr das Album simpel “Ashes Of Ares” genannt?


Freddie: Auf seine eigene Art und Weise ist es so ne Art Tribut an BLACK SABBATH, IRON MAIDEN und andere Legenden, die haben nie irgend einen Namen für ihr erstes Album ausgewählt, um ihre Band vorzustellen und den Fokus auf den Bandnamen zu legen.



Wie ging das Schreiben und Aufnehmen der Songs von statten?


Freddie: Es wurde ganz einfach mit den neuen Technologien im Internet gemacht - Pro Tools - du verstehst? (lacht)
Van: Es wurde alles separat gemacht, denn wir konnten nicht alle gleichzeitig im Studio sein. Darum hat Matt seine Sachen in einem anderen Studio gemacht als Freddie und ich. Das ging Stück für Stück. Aber es war cool es mal auf diese Art zu machen.
Freddie: Also wegen des Schreibens: Ich hatte ein paar Ideen und mailte sie Matt. Der sagte dann, ob er es mag, oder ob noch etwas geändert gehört. Und so ging es hin und her. Es war cool und wir mochten das, darum haben wir es so beibehalten.



Wie denkt ihr über die Vergleiche zu ICED EARTH? Für mich war ja klar, dass ihr nicht in eine komplett andere Richtung gehen werdet, aber manche finden, dass doch zu viele Ähnlichkeiten da sind.


Van: Ja klar, die Leute hören Matt und verbinden seine Stimme mit ICED EARTH. Aber das ist okay für uns. Ich mache mir keine Gedanken darüber, wie es klingt, solange ich es mag. Wenn wir wie eine Rap-Band für dich klingen ist es auch okay für uns, wenn du es magst sind wir glücklich. Unser Ziel ist, unser eigenes Zeug zu schreiben und unseren eigenen Stil zu finden. Aber offenbar hören die Leute Matt und meinen, wir kopieren ICED EARTH, aber das ist nicht unser Ziel.



Klingt logisch. Was waren eure Einflüsse für dieses Album?


Van: MAIDEN, SLAYER, SABBATH, MEGADETH… noch mehr SLAYER (lacht)... Es gibt hie und da einen Touch Death Metal, also ist es eine Kombination aus klassischen Bands und Death Metal Bands die wir seit unserer Jugend mögen.




Gibts schon Ideen für ein zweites Album, wisst ihr schon in welche Richtung ihr in Zukunft gehen möchtet?


Van: Es gibt bereits einige Ideen. Wir haben ein paar Songs, die noch nicht ausgereift sind, aber was wir über unsere Richtung sagen können ist, ist, dass es schwierig wird. Da müssen wir noch etwas ausbalancieren.
Freddie: Wir haben ein haben einige Songs geschrieben und als das Album aufgenommen wurde haben wir gerade zehn herausgepickt und uns den Rest für das nächste Album aufgehoben. Vielleicht werden wir da noch ein paar Sachen dran ändern und wenn wir glauben, dass die Songs es wert sind, können wir sie auch für unser nächstes Album brauchen.



Und wie lange müssen wir auf ein neues Album warten?


Freddie: Ich würde sagen, weniger als zwei Jahre.



Du spielst ja die Gitarre auf der Bühne (im Studio auch Bass), wer spielt die zweite Gitarre und den Bass auf Tour?


Freddie: Unser Bassist Dean Sternberg, ein Freund von mir, spielt in der Band PURE SWEET HELL und Gio Geraca von der Death Metal Band MALEVOLENT CREATION spielt die zweite Gitarre.



Aber werdet ihr als Band ein Trio bleiben, oder werden die beiden als reguläre MItglieder mit einsteigen?


Freddie: Das ist noch zu bald um das zu sagen, wir werden sehen, wie sich das zukünftig gestaltet und dann entscheiden.



Was könnt ihr mir über die Texte auf “Ashes Of Ares” erzählen?


Freddie: Es ist kein Konzeptalbum, aber es gibt Themen wie Leben / Tod, richtig / falsch, Himmel / Hölle - es gibt sogar einen Vampir-Song. Es gibt eine Menge Dunkelheit in den Texten und das macht mir Spaß. Aber Matt hat alle Texte geschrieben, darum sollte er besser erzählen, wie im das alles eingefallen ist.



Ihr habt bei Nuclear Blast einen Vertrag unterschrieben und ward Co-Headliner am Rock Hard Festival. Stimmt es, dass das alles passierte, bevor ihr überhaupt einen fertigen Song hattet, den sich die Verantwortlichen anhören konnten?


Freddie: Ja, die Leute hatten noch nie vorher einen Song von uns gehört, als wir dieses Festival spielten. Und genau so wars bei Nuclear Blast, denn wir hatten zwar schon das ganze Album geschrieben, aber noch nichts aufgenommen. Und das großartige an der Show war, dass die Leute trotzdem probierten mitzusingen.


(In diesem Moment kommt Matt Barlow mit einem Bier in der Hand herein und grinst)


Van: Komm her und quatsche mit!
Matt: Nein nein, ich interagiere nie mit irgendjemanden (lacht)!
Freddie: Wir nehmen hier immer noch auf.
Matt: Oh entschuldigung, ich bin hier nur herumgebummelt…


Hey Matt, schön dich hier zu sehen, willst du uns ein paar Fragen beantworten?


Matt: Ja sicher, natürlich.



Viele Leute wundern sich, warum du so kurz nach deinem Break mit ICED EARTH wieder zurück im Metal Business bist, denn das war eine große Überraschung für viele.


Matt: Tja, zuerst war es ja gar nicht sicher, ob ich die Band verlasse. Es ist wie es ist. Als ich 2008 mit ICED Earth zurückkam - Freddie wurde ja zuerst der Band vorgestellt, and ich erneut zu ICED EARTH kam, war ausgemacht, dass die Band sich meinem Terminkalender anpassen würde. Ich hatte nie vor, meine Gesetzeshüter-Karriere zu beenden um zurück ins Musikbusiness zu gehen. Und das hat auch funktioniert, bis wir zu einem gewissen Punkt gekommen sind. Die Musikindustrie ist nun anders als früher. Nur Alben herausbringen ist nicht genug heutzutage. Um als Full-Time-Band zu überleben, musst du für ca. sechs Monate unterwegs sein. Jon (Schaffer / ICED EARTH) machte mir ein Angebot, aber das war nichts was ich wollte. Nebenbei habe ich ja zwei kleine Kinder und ich wollte nicht ihr Leben versäumen, weil ich auf Tour bin. Ich meine, sie sind sechs und acht Jahre alt. Manche können ja ihre Kinder mit auf Tour bringen, aber ICED EARTH war nie in dieser Position. Es ist schwer für eine Band in einer solchen Umgebung das zu machen - wenn man bei IRON MAIDEN ist, dann ist das natürlich kein Problem.
Ich habe ihm dann höflich gesagt, dass ich das nicht machen kann. Danach kam all möglicher Blödsinn von den Fans, weil ich die Band nochmals verlassen hatte und nun bin ich mit einer anderen Band zurück. Das war eigentlich nicht meine Entscheidung. Ich habe ICED EARTH nur verlassen, weil ich mehr oder weniger gezwungen wurde und es war eine schwere Entscheidung, aber so ist es nun mal - ich will nicht das Leben meiner Kinder versäumen. Und nun sind wir hier mit ASHES OF ARES und wir arbeiten wirklich sehr hart daran, das Album zu promoten und sind auf Tour, aber wir alle wissen, wo wir herkommen und wo unsere Limits sind. Ich meine, mit ICED EARTH auf der “Crucible Of Men”-Tour tourte ich mehr als ich jemals bevor tat, was bizarr ist. Denn ich habe einen Full time-Job und mache all diese Shows. Und nun haben wir Ziele, die wir erreichen können, die wir unter einen Hut bringen und es ist nur eine Frage der Einteilung. Es ist wirklich super zur Zeit und ich hoffe, dass diese Beziehung zwischen uns so hält.



Klingt natürlich nachvollziehbar.
Freddie, was waren deine Gründe, dass du ICED EARTH verlassen hast?


Freddie: Ich war an einem Punkt angelangt, an dem ich das Ganze, was hinter den Kulissen abging, nicht mehr genießen konnte. Und wenn du das nicht kannst, dann musst du es beenden. Das war dann zwar nicht der ganze Grund, warum ich die Band verlassen habe, aber für uns war klar, wenn wir beide nicht mehr in der Band sind, dann werden wir miteinander etwas anreißen.




Und wie fühlt es sich jetzt an, mit seinem eigenen Ding, der eigenen Band unterwegs zu sein, ohne einen Boss oder etwas Ähnliches zu haben?


Matt: Es fühlt sich großartig an. Es ist einfach toll die komplette Kontrolle zu haben. Für dieses Album schrieb ich die kompletten Lyrics und jeder hat seine Meinung dazu abgegeben, was die Texte und die Musik betrifft. Ich sitze jetzt nicht herum und schreibe das Gitarrenzeug, weil ich das einfach nicht kann. Aber ich habe ein paar Sachen ausprobiert und habe das unserem Gitarristen gezeigt und er hat damit gearbeitet. So haben alle von uns die komplette Kontrolle und das ist einfach nett. Natürlich habe ich mich mit Jon auch besprochen, aber wie jeder weiß, hat er das Sagen bei ICED EARTH - so ist das nun mal. Ich hatte nie soviel Kontrolle wie heute. Es ist vergleichbar mit meiner Zeit bei PYRAMAZE, wo Michael (Kammeyer) die Texte geschrieben hat, sie mir gegeben hat und sagte - spiel damit, mach was draus - und das habe ich gemacht! Das war wirklich toll für mich.



Wie kommst du mit ICED EARTH und Jon jetzt klar?


Matt: Es ist nicht so, dass wir uns jetzt jedes Wochenende anrufen, aber wir senden uns eine Mail zum Geburtstag und Ähnliches. Ich meine, es ist okay, aber wir waren nie Freunde, die miteinander abgehangen sind, das war nie unser Fall. Ich war froh, als ich wieder bei ICED EARTH war und wir hatten eine Menge Spaß. Nun haben wir uns beide verändert und er ist sehr beschäftigt mit seinen eigenen Sachen und wir haben unsere Projekte, Privatleben, Jobs und solche Dinge. Aber wenn wir uns in Zukunft irgendwo zufällig treffen, werden wir uns natürlich auch zusammensetzen und ein paar Drinks kippen. (lacht)



Eine Frage noch an dich Van - Was ist mit NEVERMORE?


Van: Genau das selbe, als er erzählte!! (großes Gelächter)
Ich weiß nicht, was willst du wissen?


Es gibt Gerüchte über eine Wiedervereinigung und solche Sachen?


Van: Ich quatsche mit Jeff (Loomis) grundsätzlicherweise jede Woche mal. Er ist einer meiner besten Freunde und er hat mir erzählt, dass er diese Gerüchte auch hört und das ist eigenartig, weil ich glaube, dass die Leute irgend ein altes Video oder einen alten Song hören, den sie vorher nicht kannten und dann sagen sie halt - oh, es gibt diese Band wieder…
Matt: …. es fühlt sich so gut an! (lacht)
Van: Genau… and it feels so good!
Matt: Daraus sollte man einen Song machen.
Van: Also ich kann es mir in vorhersehbarer Zeit nicht vorstellen. Aber sag niemals nie. Nein - ich würde sagen, dass ich es zur Zeit nicht in den Karten sehe. Darum würde ich keinem dieser Gerüchte glauben schenken.


Dann sage ich danke für das Interview, gibts noch was von eurer Seite, was ihr loswerden wollt?


Van: Dankeschön! Danke EARSHOT…
Freddie: Sorry, dass ich das Interview vergessen habe.
Matt: Du hast tolles Haar, es ist sehr seidig, ich kann dir nur sagen, pass auf darauf! (lacht)

Hey Freddie, how are you doing at the moment?


Freddi Vidales: Great, we had a lot fun today.


How was the show for you?


Freddie: Really good...

(Drummer Van Williams is entering the Room)
Freddie: Hey come on, we just started the interview. Get in here!
Van: No, no... (laughing)


(After a short self-introduction, we continued the interview)

Can you sit a little bit closer to the voice recorder?


Van: I´ve got a loud voice! (laughing)



So, let´s continue – how is the tour going on so far?


Freddie: Great, every day we are gettin tighter and had a lot of fun, but tomorrow it is our last show.


Why don´t you continue the whole tour with POWERWOLF?


Freddie: We just got an invitation for the first half of this tour.


If you had the chance to play the wohle tour...


Freddie: It depends - who know. Because, it’s our first tour, we got only one album, that just came out, so we thought it is a little bit soon to tour. So it´s good to have a small tour, because people are not so familiar with our songs yet. Maybe we can do another tour a little bit later.


I really like this package, because it´s very diverse, but fits perfect together because of their powerful sound. How where the reactions in the crowd?

Van: There are alway mixed reactions. It´s hard to tell, the people are sometimes a little quiet and you meet them later and they are really cool. It go either way, but all in all it´s really good.
Freddie: The bands all come along really great, we have much fun, nicknames for each other and partying together.


It was a little surprise, that ASHES OF ARES with you and Matt Barlow will come up with an album – can you tell me the story of the founding of the band?


Van: Sure. Matt and I... long, long time ago... (laughs). I met Matt back in the ICED EARTH days, as they were touring with NEVERMORE and we stayed in touch all the years. On one day he told me, that is working on songs together with Freddie. I didn´t met Freddie at all. And he said, if you want you can play something. So he sent me a few rough demos and ideas and i said, that it´s really cool – let’s do it. So we met an played together, and i thought Freddie is a cool dude, so it all went well – just three knuckleheads playing music together. We just started, working on stuff and soon we had the goal of getting an album together.


What about the name – ASHES OF ARES – is there a deeper meaning?


Freddie: Matt came up with the name. ..the hell - finding a name for a band is the hardest thing in the world. We couldn’t figure out something really good. Matt always had a good connection to the fans and people called him Ares, cause of his powerful voice and compared him to the god of war. And “Ashes”... it´s about burning things down. We just thought – yeah sounds good!



How satisfied are you with the record and the reactions and critics on it?


Freddie: I am happy.
Van: Yeah, pretty happy too.
Freddie: I mean, the best thing you can hear from people is, it gets better, the more you listen to it. I heard people say, they didn´t really get into it the first time, but after they gave it a couple of listens, they couldn´t get it out of their head.



Why did you call the album just “Ashes Of Ares”?


Freddie: It´s in it´s own way a kind of tribute to BLACK SABBATH, IRON MAIDEN and all the legends, they didn´t choose a name for the first record, to introduce the band and focus on the band name, and that´s it.



How was the procedure of writing and recording the songs?

Freddie: It was basically done with new technologies over the internet – Pro-Tools, you know (laughs).
Van: It was all separated, cause we couldn´t go all into the studio the same time, so Matt did his things in another studio, than Freddie and I. We did it all in pieces. But it was cool to do it this way.
Freddie: About the writing: I came up with some ideas and emailed that to Matt and he said he like this or maybe I should change this or this. And so went it back and forth. It was cool and we liked it this way, so we will stick at this.



What do you think about the comparisons to ICED EARTH? For me it was clear that you won´t go in a completely different direction, but some people think there are too much similarities.


Freddie: Obviously the people hear Matt and connect his voice to ICED EARTH. That´s ok for us. I don´t care about how it sounds, as long as i like it. If we sound like a Rap-Band to you, its ok for us, if you like this, than we are happy. The goal is to write our own stuff and find our own style. But obviously, people hear Matt and think we are trying to copy ICED EARTH, but that´s not the way we do things.



Sounds logical. What are your influences for this album?


Freddie: MAIDEN, SLAYER, SABBATH, MEGADETH... more SLAYER (laughs). There is a touch of Death Metal here and there, so it´s a combination of classic bands and Death Metal Bands we like since our youth.



Are there already ideas for a second album or do you know in which direction you will go in the future?


Van: There are some ideas already. We have a couple of songs that are not worked out, but what I can say about the direction is, it´s gonna be heavy. We have to rebalance it a little bit.
Freddie: We wrote a bunch of songs an when the album came together we picked about ten of them and kept the rest for the next album. Maybe if we change a few things and we think they are worth it, we can use it for the next record.



And how long do we have to wait for the new records?


Freddie: I would say, less than two years.



You are playing the guitar on stage (in the studio also the bass), who is playing the second guitar and bass on tour?


Freddie: Our Bassplayer Dean Sternberg, who is a friend of mine, he plays in the band PURE SWEET HELL and Gio Geraca from the Death Metal Band MALEVOLENT CREATION is playing the second guitar.



But as band you will stay as a three-piece, or will the join you as regular members maybe in the future?


Freddie: It´s too soon to tell, but we will see how it goes in the future and decide.



What can you tell me about the lyrics of “Ashes Of Ares”?

Freddie: It´s not a kind of concept-album, but there is a theme like life/death, right/wrong, heaven/hell – there is also a vampire-song. There is a lot of darkness to the lyrics, that´s fun for me. But Matt wrote all the lyrics, so it would be better to talk to him about, why this stuff came to his head.



You signed a contract with Nuclear Blast and played a Co-Headliner Gig on the Rock Hard Festival. Is it true, that this all happened, before you didn´t had a song ready for them to listen to?


Freddie: Yeah, the crowd never heard a song before, when we played at this festival. And Nuclear Blast also didn´t hear any song, because we had the whole album written, but not recorded yet. The great thing on the show was, that people tried to sing along with us.

Van: Come on in and interject!
Matt: Oh no, i never interject anything (laughs).
Freddie: We still record here.
Matt: Oh sorry, i was rambling around (irgendwas mit usually – verstehs ned ca. min 10:00)


Hey Matt, nice to meet you here, do you want to join the interview?


Matt: Sure, absolutely.



So, many people want to know why you are back in the metal business so soon after you left ICED EARTH, because that was a big surprise for most of the people


Matt: Well, that´s, because, i wasn´t even ensure to leave in the first place. It is, what it is. When i was back with ICED EARTH in 2008 - Freddie was introduced to the band first, and then i joined ICED EARTH again, it was under the understanding that the band will work around my schedule. I never intended to give up my law enforcement career, to go back into music again. And it worked out until we got to the point... the record industry is so different now, than it was back then. Just releasing records, is not enough today. To survive as a full-time band, you have to be on the road for about six months. Jon (Schaffer / ICED EARTH) gave me an offer, but that wasn´t something, that i wanted to do. Besides that, i got two small kids and I didn´t want to miss their live going by, because of touring around. I mean, they are six and eight years old now. Some guys can bring their kids on tour, but ICED EARTH was never in that position. It´s very hard for a band in that area to do that – if you are IRON MAIDEN – sure, no problem.
I told him, sorry, I can´t do that gracefully. After that, much shit came from some fans, because I left again and now I am back with another band. It wasn´t my decision. I came back into the band at a certain point where it worked. I only left ICED EARTH, because, I was kind of forced to and that was a hard decision, but it is, what it is – I don´t want to miss my kids live. And so, here we are with ASHES OF ARES and we are working very hard to promote are album and are on tour, but we all know where we are coming from and we understand where are limitations are. I mean with ICED EARTH at the “Crucible Of Men” tour i toured more than I ever toured before, which is bizarre. Because I´m holding a full-time show plus we are doing all this shows. And now our goals can be reached, it can be done, it´s only a matter of scheduling. It´s very cool right now and I hope this relationship will continue.



Sounds really comprehensible. Freddie, what was you reason to leave ICED EARTH?


Freddie: I was on a point, where I wasn´t really enjoying that where going on behind the scenes. If you do not enjoy what you do, you have to stop it. And, that was not the reason, why I left, but it was always in our minds, if we are both out of the band, we will start to work together.



So, how does it feel now to be around with your own thing, your own band, without a boss or something?


Matt: It feels great. It’s great to have complete control. For this record I wrote all the lyrics and everyone can give his opinions about the lyrics and the music. I´m not gonna sit there and try to write guitar stuff, because I am not a writer. But I formulated some stuff and told it our guitar player and he worked with it. So, all of us three have complete control and that´s really nice. Sure, I collaborated with Jon, but as everyone knows, he is completely in control of ICED EARTH – that´s the way it is. I never had so much control like today. It´s the similar to the time with PYRAMAZE, where Michael (Kammeyer) has written lyrics, gave it to me and said – go crazy with it, do what you want to do with it – and I did! That was really cool thing for me.



How is your realationship now with ICED EARTH and Jon?


Matt: It´s not like, we pick up the phone and call every weekend, but we send email occasionally to wish happy birthday and stuff. I mean we´re cool, but never where guys who hanging up together for a long time, that wasn´t just not that thing. I was glad to be back with ICED EARTH and we shared so much fun. Now he moved on and is really fucking busy with his shit, and we are busy with our shit and our personal lives, jobs and that stuff. But if we come across in the future on tour or so, we sure sit back and have some drinks.(laughs)



One question for you Van – What about NEVERMORE?


Van: Same thing!!! (big laughter)
I don´t know, what do you want to know?



There are some rumours about reunion and that stuff out there...


Van: I talk to Jeff (Loomis) basically like every week. He is one of my best friends. And he says, he hears that things too and it´s a kind of weird, becuase, they see an old video or hear a song, they didn´t know before, then people say – oh, they are reuniting...
Matt: ... and it feels so good! (laughs)
Van: yeah... and it feels so good!
Matt: That should be a song.
Van: I don´t see that in a near foreseeable future. Would I ever say never? No – i am just saying, it´s not in the cards at the moment. So, I would not believe in any of these rumours.
