Die britischen Power Metaller NEONFLY gehören für mich auf jeden Fall zu den Neuentdeckungen des Jahres. Mit ihrem Debüt "Outshine The Sun", das vor Hits, Hymnen und Hooklines nur so platzt, legten sie ein starkes Debüt hin. Album Nummer zwei steht schon in den Startlöchern und soll im kommendne Jahr erscheinen. Gitarrist und Mastermind Frederick Thunder und Bassist Paul Miller trafen wir am Masters Of Rock zum lustigen Plausch.


Okay Jungs, NEONFLY ist ja zurzeit noch nicht so bekannt, ich hoffe aber, dass das sich in den nächsten Jahren ändern wird.
Könnt ihr euch und die Band einmal vorstellen?


Frederick Thunder: Wir sind NEONFLY aus London. Wir haben 2011 unser erstes Album herausgebracht und wir haben gerade unser zweites Album aufgenommen, dieses wurde aber gerade noch nicht veröffentlicht. wir haben es in Deutschland mit Dennis Ward von UNISONIC aufgenommen und warten nun auf die Veröffentlichung, wahrscheinlich wird das Anfang 2014 passieren. Wir haben hier am Masters of Rock ein paar neue Songs zum Besten gegeben und das war das erste Mal, dass wir neues Material live gespielt haben. Wir haben ziemlich gute Reaktionen bekommen.

Paul Miller: Und wir lieben das tschechische Publikum, die fackeln da nicht lange herum, die legen gleich los.




So gut braucht ihr dann auch nicht über das tschechische Publikum reden, wir sind nämlich aus Österreich.


Frederick: Noch bevor wir irgendeinen Vertrag unterschrieben hatten und unser erstes Album rausbrachten, war unser erster Gig in Österreich. Wir haben in einem Ort namens Fürstenfeld gespielt, das ist in der Nähe von Graz.


Da gibt es einen wirklich bekannten Song von einer berühmten österreichischen Band!


Beide: Das wissen wir! „Going back to Fürstenfeld“. (lachen) Das wurde uns schon öfter erzählt.


Euer Auftritt gestern war wirklich großartig. Letztes Jahr habe ich euch leider verpasst, ich glaube, da hat eine anderen Band auf der großen Bühne gespielt.


Paul: Ja, FREEDOM CALL. Mit denen sind wir mittlerweile befreundet, da wir schon zwei Mal miteinander getourt sind.


Wir war es für euch gestern? Habt ihr eure Show genossen?


Frederick: Ja! Es war irre.


Vielleicht eure größte Show bisher?


Paul: Ja, das war unsere größte Show bisher.


Wie sehen eure Shows zuhause aus? Gibt es viele Bands mit eurem Stil in London?


Paul: Es gibt POWERQUEST, die sich unglücklicherweise dieses Jahr getrennt haben. Und DRAGONFORCE sind in etwa derselbe Stil, spielen aber in einer eigenen Liga. In England ist diese Art von Musik nicht wirklich populär, aber das kümmert uns nicht wirklich. Wir spielen die Musik, die wir mögen. Und wir hoffen, dass aufgrund unserer Ehrlichkeit und der Tatsache, dass wir an das was wir machen glauben, die Leute uns mögen werden. Auch wenn sie vielleicht etwas länger brauchen, es anzunehmen.

Frederick: Weißt du, es gibt Leute, die sehen wir immer wieder auf unseren Konzerten, vertraute Gesichter sozusagen und die bringen dann auch wieder andere Leute mit. Und das ist gut so, es wächst sicherlich.

Paul: Letztes Jahr zum Beispiel, da spielten wir am Download Festival in England, was eines der größten Festivals in Europa ist. Also seit letztem Jahr ist die Situation in England besser geworden. Es geht zwar langsam voran, aber wir schaffen es.





Ihr habt ja gerade erzählt, dass ihr schon mal in Österreich gespielt habt. Was wisst ihr über die österreichische Metal Szene?


Frederick: Wir kennen ein paar österreichische Power Metal Bands. ECLIPTICA sind Bekannte von uns, wir haben sie bei einer Show in Wien getroffen. Das war sogar eine Headliner Show und sie kamen um uns zu sehen. Seit diesem Zeitpunkt wollten wir immer eine Show miteinander machen und als wir letztes Jahr am Weg zum Masters of Rock waren, legten wir einen Stopp in Bratislava ein und haben endlich miteinander gespielt.


Wie geht es euch, wenn ihr auf euer erstes Album zurückblickt?


Frederick: Magst du es?


Ja!


Frederick: Ich finde, es ist ein wirklich tolles Album, die Songs sind brilliant, es ist einfach fantastisch. (lacht)

Paul: Ich will ja nichts gegen das erste Album sagen, aber das neue wird noch um Einiges besser sein.


Was können wir erwarten?


Frederick: Also im Vergleich zum ersten Album wird es ein bisschen heavier sein, es gibt darauf aber auch einige ruhigere Songs, denn wir haben einige Balladen geschrieben. Es zeigt ein breiteres Spektrum von unserer Musik und auch die Produktion ist um einiges besser.


Es ist für mich jetzt schwer, ich habe ein paar Songs live gehört. Aber das erste was ich mir dachte war, dass die Songs vom neuen Album nicht so eingängig sind. Ich glaube, man braucht mehr Zeit um reinzukommen.


Frederick: Ich weiß nicht. Wahrscheinlich ist das, weil wir nur ein paar neue Songs gespielt haben. Ich denke, du musst das Album im Ganzen hören, bevor du urteilst, denn wenn du es einmal gehört hast, wirst du begeistert sein.




Ist das neue Album schon fertig?


Frederick: Ja, es ist schon fertig.


Und gibt es schon einen Namen?


Frederick: Nein, wir haben noch keinen. Da müssen wir uns noch etwas überlegen.


Was könnt ihr mir über eure Texte erzählen? Wer schreibt sie? Worum geht’s? Was sind eure Einflüsse?


Frederick: Tja, sie entstehen in Zusammenarbeit mit mir und unserem Sänger. Grundsätzlich habe ich für unser erstes Album die meisten Songtexte geschrieben und unser Sänger so drei, glaube ich. Für unser zweites Album kommen mehr aus seiner Feder. Und es gibt auch kein Konzept oder so in der Art. Eigentlich sind unsere Songs bunt gemischt. Wir haben ein paar ernste Songs über Krieg und Freiheit und ein paar über Fantasy und Freaks, auch ein paar Balladen über Beziehungen.




Also genretypische Themen?


Paul: Ja, ich denke schon. Aber das ist schwer zu sagen.

Frederick: Denn ich finde kein Thema ist gut , solange man nicht etwas damit aussagen kann.

Paul: Und wir schreiben da auch keine Geschichten.

Frederick: Genau, wir versuchen da nicht unsere Songs auf dem Album miteinander zu verbinden. Wir haben eine gute Idee, schreiben darüber und dann ist auch gut.



Was könnt ihr mir über die Gründung der Band erzählen? Hattet ihr schon Mitgliederwechsel?


Frederick: Ja, wir hatten ein paar Wechsel. Ich und Paul sind noch Gründungsmitglieder.

Paul: Also eigentlich sind wir drei Gründungsmitglieder, Patrick ja auch.

Frederick: Ach ja, genau! Patrick unser Gitarrist. Und Willy war der letzte der hinzugekommen ist, er fing 2010 bei uns an. Zu Beginn hatten wir einen anderen Sänger und er war wirklich gut, aber es war nicht das, was er machen wollte. Weißt du, wenn du es wirklich erst meinst mit der Musik, muss jeder fest daran glauben was er macht und Freude daran haben. Und er hat sich dafür entschieden, uns zu verlassen. Und nun haben wir einen großartigen Sänger und super Frontman, der genau das will, was wir machen. Unser Schlagzeuger kam 2009 zu uns, davor hatten wir keinen offiziellen Drummer. Wir hatten da immer wieder Wechsel bis er bei uns einstieg und nun gehört er uns. (lacht)


Wie habt ihr mit der Band angefangen, was war euer Plan?


Frederick: Eigentlich sind wir alle in dieselbe Schule gegangen und so haben wir uns auch kennen gelernt. Ich bin dann derjenige, der die meiste Musik schreibt und noch bevor wir unser erstes Demo herausbrachten, hatte ich schon ziemlich viel Zeug geschrieben. Ich habe dann versucht, die Band zusammenzukriegen und einer nach dem anderen schloss sich der Band an.


Wie sehen eure zukünftigen Tourpläne aus?


Frederick: In paar Wochen fallen wir in Deutschland mit ALICE COOPER ein. Das wird so richtig groß.

Paul: Wir machen drei Gigs in Deutschland mit ALICE COOPER und in Nürnberg haben wir sogar eine Show als Headliner. Außerdem spielen wir auch in der Schweiz.

Frederick: Genau, wir machen auch ein paar Headliner Shows.





Was erwartet ihr euch von den Headliner Shows?


Frederick: Wir erwarten uns so zirka 3 Leute. (lacht)

Paul: Wir sind letzten November schon getourt und das war wirklich toll für uns, weil wir uns schon eine Basis aufbauen konnten. Also hoffentlich sehen wir wieder ein paar bekannte Gesichter. Als wir vor ein paar Tagen in Deutschland waren haben wir in Hamburg ein kleines Konzert gespielt und trafen auf einen Fan, der uns schon auf der MAGNUM Tour gesehen hat. Sie kam zu uns und sagte: „Schaut, was ich habe!“ Sie drehte sich um und hatte das NEONFLY Logo als Tattoo im Nacken. Darum glaube ich, dass wir uns während der MAGNUM Tour schon ein paar Fans angelacht haben. Und die Tour war auch eine großartige Lernerfahrung für uns.


Okay, ihr habt also schon eine Menge Konzerte absolviert, da gibt es doch sicher einige interessante Geschichten zu erzählen?


(Gelächter)
Frederick: Wir haben sicher eine Menge Stories, aber die werden wir dir sicher nicht erzählen.
Paul: Zum Beispiel mussten wir gestern unseren Gitarristen mit einem Einkaufswagen zum Zelt fahren. Er war zuerst noch ziemlich aufgekratzt von der gestrigen Show, kam dann aber zurück in unsere Garderobe und schlief sofort ein. Darum mussten wir in aufklauben, hievten ihn in einen Einkaufswagen und beförderten ihn zurück zum Zelt. (lacht)


Das erste Mal als ich auf euch aufmerksam wurde war letztes Jahr als ihr am Masters of Rock eine Pressekonferenz abhieltet und auf der Second Stage spieltet. Und dieses Jahr habt ihr sogar schon auf der Main Stage gespielt. Welche Verbindungen habt ihr zum Masters Of Rock?


Frederick: Tja, wir haben dieses Jahr gespielt, weil wir letztes Jahr auch da waren und es war ein gutes Zeichen, dass uns die Presseleute gemocht haben. Das Publikum war unglaublich, obwohl es geregnet hat. Danach haben wir mit MAGNUM getourt und George, der Hauptverantwortliche für dieses Festival hat uns gesehen und als er Backstage kam sagte er uns, dass er uns dieses Jahr auf der Main Stage haben will.


Und wen oder was würdet ihr als eure musikalischen Einflüsse bezeichnen?


(in der Zwischenzeit ist auch Sänger Willi Norton zum Interview gestoßen)


Willi Norton: Wir hören alle ganz verschiedene Arten von Musik. Als ich jünger war habe ich viel IRON MAIDEN gehört und natürlich METALLICA. Ja es gibt da so viele Bands, die ich aufzählen könnte.

Paul: Aber wenn wir darauf zurückkommen, was mich veranlasst hat, ein Musiker werden zu wollen, dann ist das IRON MAIDEN. Ich habe mit IRON MAIDEN begonnen und höre diese Band noch heute. Aber leider habe ich sie nie live gesehen.





Und was sind eure Ziele für die nächsten Jahre?


Frederick: Wir werden vermutlich unser zweites Album herausbringen und möchten dann so viel wie möglich touren. Denn wir lieben es zu touren. Und wir wollen unbedingt am Bloodstock Festival in England spielen.

Okay guys, NEONFLY is not so famous in the moment, I hope, it will be better in the next years.
So can you introduce yourself and the whole band?


Frederick Thunder: Well, we are NEONFLY from London. We’ve got an album out, it’s out in 2011. It’s our first album. And we’ve just recorded our second album, which hasn’t been released yet. We recorded in Germany with Dennis Ward from UNISONIC. And we are waiting for release. Probably it comes out at the start of 2014. We played a couple of new songs here at Masters of Rock yesterday for almost the first time. We did a show in Hamburg just the night before and we played a few new songs there. So we played new material first time on stage. And we got a really good reaction.


Paul Miller: And we love the Czech crowd, they don’t mess around, they really go for it.


You don’t have to talk this good about the Czech crowd, because we are from Austria.


Frederick: Before we were signed, before we released our first album, our first gig was in Austria. We played in a place called Fürstenfeld, it’s near Graz.


There’s a really famous song from an Austrian Band about!


Both: We know! “Going back to Fürstenfeld”. (laughing) We were told many times about it.


Your gig yesterday was really great. Last year I missed your gig, I don’t know why, I think another band played at the main stage.


Paul: FREEDOM CALL. They are our friends, because we toured with them twice actually.


How was it for you yesterday? Did you enjoy the show?


Frederick: Yeah! It was crazy.


Maybe the biggest show you have ever played?


Paul: Yes, that was the biggest show.


How do you do shows at home? Are there many bands with your style in London?


Paul: There is POWERQUEST, with which unfortunately broke up this year. And DRAGONFORCE are kinda same style but they are in their own league. In the UK this kind of music is not really popular. But we don’t worry about. We just play the music that we want. and we hope because of our honesty and the fact that we believe in the songs that we make, that people are gonna like it. Even if it takes a bit longer for them to accept it.

Frederick: You know, we saw some people coming again to our concerts, familiar faces, and they are bringing people. It’s good, it’s certainly growing.

Paul: For example, last year we played on the Download Festival in the UK, which is one of the biggest festivals in Europe. So since last year, things have gone better in the UK so it’s going slow, but we get it.


I heard, you already played in Austria, what do you know about the metal scene there?.


Frederick: We know a few Austrian Power Metal bands. ECLIPTICA are friends of us and we met them on a show in Vienna. It was a headliner show. They came to see us. So we met ECLIPITICA there and since then we always wanted to play a show together. And last year, when we were on the way to Masters of Rock, we stopped in Bratislava and finally played together with them.


How do you look back now on your first record?


Frederick: Do you like it?


Yes! Can´t Stopp listening to it.


Frederick: Oh I think it’s a beautiful album, the songs are brilliant. It’s amazing. (laughs)


Paul: I say nothing against the first album, but the new one will be a way better in everything. The production and everything.


What can we expect?


Frederick: From the second album compared to the first album it’s a bit heavier but in the same time it’s also got some softer songs, because we have some real ballads. It shows a broader spectrum from our music and the production is much better.


It’s hard to say, I only heard the songs live, the new and the old songs. But the first thing I thought was, that the one song from the new album was not so catchy. I think I need more time to get into it.


Frederick: I don’t know. I think because we only played a few songs from the new album, I think you need to hear the full album before you make judge with us, because once you listen to it, you get on it.


Is the new album completed?


Frederick: Yeah, it’s ready.


Do you have a name already?


Frederick: No, we don’t. We have to think about it.


So what can you tell me about the lyrics? Who writes it? What are they about? What are your influences?


Frederick: Well, they are collaboration from me and our singer. Basically for the first album I wrote most of the lyrics and he wrote about three songs I think. For the second album he actually wrote more lyrics than I did. And there’s no concept or so. Actually we have pretty many songs about different types. Let’s say some more serious songs about freedom and war and something like that. And maybe some fantasy and freaks, a few ballads about relationship.


Also typical genre subjects?


Paul: Yeah, I guess so. But it is really hard to say.


Frederick: Because I don’t think any subject is good, as long as you really have something to say about it.


Paul: And we don’t exactly write a story.


Frederick: We don’t really try to connect our songs. We just have a good idea and want to write about it and then it’s good.


Can you tell me something about founding the band? Did band members change?


Frederick: Yeah, we had a few changes. Me and Paul are original band members.


Paul: We are three original band members, Patrick too.


Frederick: Oh yeah, Patrick, the guitarist as well. And Willy was the last who joined us, he started in 2010. And at first we had another singer and he was alright, but it was not the thing he wanted to do. You know, when you are really serious with the music and everybody needs to believe in what he is doing and go for it. And so he decided to leave. And now we really have a great singer and good frontman and he really wants to do what we are doing now. Our drummer joined us in 2009. Before that we didn’t have an official drummer. We kinda went through a few drummers and now he joined us and now he is the drummer. (laughs)


And how did you start the band? What was the intention?


Frederick: Actually we all went to the same college so that’s how we met. I am the one who writes most of the music and when we released our first demo I already had written a lot of stuff. I tried to get the band together and one by one they joined the band.


What are your tourplans for the future?


Frederick: In a couple of weeks we actually hit Germany with ALICE COOPER. So that’s really really really big.

Paul: We have three gigs in Germany with ALICE COOPER and one in Nürnberg as headliner. And we are also playing in Swizerland.

Frederick: We also do a few headliner shows as well.


What do you expect from the headliner shows?


Frederick: We expect about three people. (laughs)

Paul: We toured last November and that was really good for us, we built a crowd as well. So hopefully we see some faces again. When we were in Germany, a couple of days ago we played a small gig in Hamburg and one of our fans saw us with MAGNUM and she came back and she said: “Look, what I’ve got!” And she turned around and she had a NEONFLY-Logo tattoo on her neck. And so I guess we did make a few fans during the MAGNUM tour. And the tour was a big learning experience for us.


Okay, you had a lot of gigs, do you have some interesting stories for me?


(laughing)
Frederick: We have a lot of stories, but probably we won’t gonna tell you.

Paul: For example yesterday we had to carry our guitarist in a shopping cart to his tent. He was on such a high from the show yesterday, he came back to our dressing room and pretty much fell asleep straight away. So I had to pick him up, put him into a shopping cart and drove him back. (laughs)


For the first time I heard of you was last year, when you did this press conference and played on the Second-Stage. Last year you played on the second stage and this year you played on the main stage. What connections do you have with Masters of Rock?


Frederick: Well, we actually play on Masters of Rock because we played here last year and that was a good sign that the press people liked us. And the crowd was unbelievable although it was raining. And after that we toured with MAGNUM and George, the main man of this festival saw us and he came backstage and he told us, that he really wants us to play on the main stage.


And what are your influences?
(meanwhile the singer Willi Norton joined the interview)


Willi Norton: We all listen do different types of music. In my early days I listened a lot of IRON MAIDEN and of course METALLICA. There are so many.

Paul: Well if we go back to what made me want to be a musician, that would be IRON MAIDEN. I began with IRON MAIDEN and I am already listening IRON MAIDEN today. But I never saw them live.


What are your goals for the next few years?


Frederick: We are supposed to release our second album and tour as much as we can. Because we love touring. And we want to play Bloodstock festival in UK.
