DARK TRANQUILLITY schlagen zwar beim neuen Werk "Construct" ein paar ruhigere Töne an, zeigen dafür umso mehr, wie atmosphärisch und kompositorisch hochwertig sie sein können. Die Melodic Death Metal Legende steht seit jeher für starke Alben, kraftvolle Live-Auftritte und ist aus Göteborg und der ganzen Metal Szene nicht mehr weg zu denken. Keyboarder Martin Brändström hat sich bereit erklärt uns mehr zu erzählen.


Hi! Was ist los bei euch im Moment?


Jetzt im Sommer sind wir auf europäischen Festivals unterwegs, was üblicherweise für uns heißt, dass wir an den Wochenenden herumreisen und wochentags versuchen uns zuhause zu entspannen.




Euer neues Album „Construct“ ist gerade herausgekommen. Wie geht es euch dabei und wie waren die bisherigen Reaktionen?


Uns geht es großartig damit und könnten dabei nicht glücklicher sein wie sich das Ganze entwickelt hat. Wir bekamen hauptsächlich positive Reaktionen, aber ich glaube, dass sich manche vor den Kopf gestoßen fühlen und Probleme haben, uns in diese neue Richtung zu folgen. Aber so etwas ist einfach zu erwarten, wenn man etwas Neues ausprobiert.


Wo siehst du die Unterschiede im Vergleich zum letzten Album? Für mich klingt es dunkler und melodischer, nicht so aggressiv, mehr atmosphärisch.


Da stimme ich dir zu, ein anderer Unterschied ist auch, dass wir den Fokus mehr auf die einzelnen Songs gelegt haben und weniger auf einen modernen Sound. Dadurch entstand bei den Songs eine größere Vielfalt.



Habt ihr das so geplant, oder hat es sich entwickelt?


Solche Sachen passieren meisten ganz einfach, so etwas lässt sich nicht planen. Eigentlich ist es eine Reaktion darauf, was wir gerade machen und uns gerade inspiriert.


Ich habe gehört, dass Niklas zuerst das Artwork nicht machen wollte. Warum hat er diese Entscheidung überdacht und was kannst du mir über das Artwork erzählen?


Ich glaube, als unsere kreative Blockade was die Musik betrifft, aufgehoben wurde, fand er auch neue visuelle Inspiration. Dieser Wandel ging fast über Nacht und eines Morgens zeigte er uns, was er sich vorstellte, wie es aussehen sollte und wir fanden es alle genau richtig.




Was war eure Idee bei dem Titel „Construct“?


Wir haben das Wort aus einem Songtext, den wir während der Session aufgenommen hatten. Es betrifft verschiedenste Dinge in unserem Leben, die wir in unserem Kopf kreieren und die uns eigentlich ein Limit setzen. Und das für einen selbst zu definieren macht einen nur stärker im Alltag.



Und was kannst du mir über die Songtexte sagen?


Ich versuche eigentlich normal nicht, Mikael’s Texte zu erläutern. Das liegt an jedem einzelnen, was man hineininterpretieren möchte und welche Bedeutung man für sich selbst sieht.





Auf diesem Album habt ihr mehr cleane Vocals als auf den früheren Erscheinungen. Wie kam diese Entscheidung? Ich finde, es passt sehr gut zu dem atmosphärischen Sound von „Construct“.


Also wir sind eigentlich immer dafür offen, wenn es zu dem Song passt. Dieses Album „atmet“ etwas mehr und es passierte einfach als wir an den Vocal-Parts gearbeitet haben, die normalerweise ja das letzte Puzzleteil darstellen.

Es dauerte drei Jahre bis zum Erscheinen des neuen Albums. Was passierte derweil und müssen wir wieder so lange warten, bis wir ein neues DT-Album bekommen?


Wir hatten einen ziemlichen heftigen Tourplan für „We Are The Void“, darum hatten wir vorerst keine Zeit um zu Schreiben. Als wir uns dann endlich hinsetzen konnten, haben wir bemerkt, dass wir alle eine ziemliche Schreibblockade hatten und es dauerte einfach eine Zeit, bis wir die Knoten entwirren konnten.


Ihr habt „For Broken Words“ als erste Single ausgewählt. Warum diesen Song?


Wir fanden, dass es eine gute Art ist unseren Hörern zu zeigen, dass sie das das Unerwartete erwarten sollen. Es ist auch die erste Nummer auf dem Album. Die kühlen und unterbrochenen Vibes setzen den Rest des Songs perfekt in Szene, zumindest in meinem Kopf.




Seid ihr eigentlich noch immer auf der Suche nach einem neuen Bassisten?


Zurzeit sind wir noch dabei herauszufinden, was die beste Lösung für uns ist. Uns geht es als Quintett gut und mit Martin am Bass haben wir nicht das Gefühl, dass uns irgendeine Kernkompetenz in der Band fehlt. Wir haben darüber gesprochen, dass wir uns eher einen Session-Musiker für die Zukunft suchen.



Wer hat die Bass-Parts auf diesem Album jetzt eingespielt?


Martin Henriksson war das. Eine willkommene Rückkehr von seinem Spielstil von früher.



Ich habe gesehen, dass ihr für das Szene Open Air in Österreich zugesagt habt. Ihr werdet inmitten von Pop Bands und Bands anderer Genres auftreten. Kennt ihr Gruppen wie DEICHKIND, RUSSKAJA oder PAROV STELAR? Und wie geht es euch dabei, die einzige Metal Band auf dem Festival zu sein?


Ich habe von diesen Bands vorher noch nie gehört. Ich denke mir, es wird schon anders und vielleicht eine kleine Challenge die einzige Metal Band zu sein, aber die Genres überschneiden sich heutzutage und vielleicht findet das Publikum etwas in unserer Musik, das ihnen gefällt, auch wenn sie normalerweise keinen Metal hören.




Im Juli tretet ihr in Indien auf. Seid ihr zum ersten Mal dort? Was erwartet ihr euch vom indischen Publikum?


Wir sind zum zweiten Mal dort. Wir spielten 2011 in Hydarebad. Wir erwarten uns eine großartige Zeit. Die meisten Menschen, die Metal hören sind dieselben, ganz egal von wo sie kommen. Wir haben dieselben Reaktionen in Beijing und Köln gesehen. Ich glaube nicht, dass das in Bangalore anders sein wird und freue mich schon darauf.



Was habt ihr sonst noch für Tourpläne dieses Jahr?


Wir sind gerade dabei, den Planungsprozess abzuschließen, aber wir haben vor dieses Album auch in die entferntesten Ecken der Welt zu bringen. Aber das erste wird eine Headliner-Tour durch Europa sein.

Hi, what is going on at the moment?


Right now during the summer we are in the European festival season which usually means travelling during the weekends doing shows and chilling at home during the weekdays getting some sort of time off.



Your new album “Construct” is already out. How do you feel now and how are the reactions?


We feel great about it and could not be happier by how it turned out. We have had mostly positive reactions but I guess some people feels a bit alienated and are having trouble following us in the new direction. It is to be expected every time you try something different.



Where do you see the differences in comparison to the last album? For me, it sounds more dark and melodic. Not so aggressive but more atmospheric.


I agree, another difference is that we put the songs more in focus instead of having a streamlined sound. That came with a bigger diversity between the songs.



Did you plan these changes or was it more a natural thing?


These things usually happens organically and is not mapped out ahead. Usually it´s a reaction on what we have been doing recently and what is currently inspiring to us.



I heard Niklas didn´t want to do the artwork first. Why did he rethink his decision and what can you tell me about the artwork?


I think when our creative block was lifted with the music, he found new inspiration visually as well. The change was pretty much over night and one morning he just showed us what he thought it should look like and we thought it was spot on.



What was the idea of the title “Construct”?


The word is taken from a lyric that we recorded during the session. It applies to the different things in life we build up in our heads and usually puts a limit on us. Defining it for ourselves makes us stronger in everyday life.



What can you tell me about the lyrics on this release?


I usually try not to explain Mikael´s lyrics. It´s out there for everyone to interpret and the exact meaning is for you to define.



On this one you have more clean vocals than on the former few records. Why came this decision? I think it totally fits to this more atmospheric sound of “Construct”.


We are always open for it if it fits the song. This album breathes a bit more and it came natural when we worked on the vocal parts which are usually the last piece of the puzzle.



This record took over three years. What happened in the meantime and do we have to wait again for so long to get a new DT album?


There was a pretty heavy tour schedule for We Are the Void so at first we did not have the time to write at all. When we finally sat down we realized we were up against a severe case of writer´s block and it took a while for us to untangle the knots.



You chose “For Broken Words” as your first single. Why was this song your first choice?


We thought it would be a good way to tell our listeners to expect the unexpected. We also put it first on the album. Its cold and disconnected vibe sets the scene perfectly for the rest of the songs, at least in my mind.



Are you already in search for a new bass player?


Right now we are trying to figure out what will be the best solution for us. We are happy being a five piece and with Martin´s bass playing we do not feel that we are missing any core competence in the band. Most likely we are talking about a session member in the future.



Who played the bass parts on the album?


Martin Henriksson played it. A welcome return of his playing style from the earlier years.



I saw, that you are confirmed on the Szene Open Air in Austria. You will play among pop bands and other groups across many genres. Do you know these bands like DEICHKIND, RUSSKAJA or PAROV STELAR? And what do you think about being the only one real Metal Band on a festival?


I have not heard of them before. I guess it will be different and maybe a bit of a challenge being the only metal band but genres have more intersections these days and perhaps the audience will find something appealing to them in our music even if they are not into metal.



In July you will play in India. Is this your first time? What do you expect from the audience there?


It is our second time. We played in Hydarebad 2011. We expect it to be a great time. Most people listening to metal are the same regardless of where they come from. We see the same reactions in Beijing as in Cologne. I expect Bangalore to be no different and am really looking forward to it.



What are your other tour plans for this year?


We are in the process of finalizing everything but we plan to take this album to all the far corners of the world. First up will be a headlining tour in Europe.
