SCORPION CHILD schwimmen vielleicht gerade auf der Retro-Welle mit, haben aber definitiv das Zeug auch länger zu überleben, was sie eindrucksvoll mit ihrem Debüt "Scorpion Child" bewiesen haben. Frontmann Aryn Jonathan Black und Gitarrist Chris Cowart haben so einige interessante Einblick ins Leben des Scorpion gegeben.


SCORPION CHILD gehören zu den heißesten Newcomern dieser Tage, doch viele kennen euch noch nicht. Könnt ihr die Band kurz vorstellen?>>

Chris: Wir sind eine 5-Mann „No-Bullshit-Rock´N´Roll Band“! Die Band besteht aus Sänger Aryn Jonathan Black, Bassist Shaun Avants, Drummer Shawn Paul Alvear, Rhythmus Gitarrist Tom Frank und mir als Lead Gitarristen. Wir grüßen aus Austin, Texas.




Wie habt ihr es geschafft, bei einem der größten Metal/Rock Labels der Welt, nämlich Nuclear Blast, zu unterzeichnen?


Aryn: Wir haben gespielt wie immer und Monte Conner hat uns dabei zugesehen und beschlossen unser Management zu kontaktieren. Das Vergnügen war beiderseits und uns wurde ein großartiges Angebot unterbreitet, sodass wir den Deal unterzeichneten.
Chris: Wir wussten, dass wir ein großartiges Album haben und auch, dass wir dafür ein gutes Label hinter uns brauchen, um es auf den Markt zu bringen. Wir sind alle schon immer große Fans von Nuclear Blast und vielen Bands in ihrem Roster. Für uns ist damit ein Traum wahr geworden und es ist eine große Ehre in der Familie zu sein.



Habt ihr euch jemals erträumt, so einen Deal zu unterzeichnen und wie ist es mit diesem Label zu arbeiten?


Aryn:Wie wir alle wissen, können Erwartungen einen bremsen und so hatten wir nur die Erwartungen, die wir an uns selbst gesetzt haben als wir das Angebot von Nuclear Blast angenommen haben. Es ist ein wirklich riesiges Label mit vielen großartigen Beziehungen. Es ist wie eine Familie für eine Band wie uns, zu der wir jetzt gehören. Es ist fantastisch!

Chris: Natürlich war es überraschend, einen Deal mit Nuclear Blast zu bekommen, aber es fühlt sich so nach zu Hause an. Ich denke aber auch, dass wir für das Label eine kleine Herausforderung sind, da NB sehr viele sehr heavy Bands hat und im Rock´N´Roll Bereich noch nicht so erfahren ist. Ich bin froh ein Teil eines Labels zu sein, das auch in uns glaubt und auch unsere Meinung Ernst nimmt.



HWie seid ihr auf den Bandnamen SCORPION CHILD gekommen?


Aryn: Durch das Zeichen des Skorpions mit seinem Ethos, Schwung und Entschlossenheit. Pure Power!
Chris: Wir sind alle große Fans von THE CULT. „Scorpion Child“ ist eine Textpassage aus dem Song „Lil Devil“ vom „Electric“ Album.



Was sind eure Einflüsse und Idole?


Aryn: Schauspieler, Persönlichkeiten, Komiker, Autoren, Philosophen, Reisende und Musikerkollegen.
Chris: Was mich als Gitarristen betrifft, Jim McCarty von CACTUS. Sein Stil wie er seine Gitarre spielt, ist großartig. Seine Riffs und Leads sind so große, aber trotzdem harmonisch. Ich bin auch ein THIN LIZZY Fan der Ära Gorham / Robertson. Außerdem ist Gary Moore ein großartiger Spieler. Paul Kossof von FREE ist auch ein sehr unterbewerteter Gitarrist. Er war nicht so auffällig, wie andere Musiker seiner Ära, aber bei ihm zählte jede Scheiß Note. Auf der moderneren Seite sind da THE MELVIN´S, FUGAZI, SOUNDGARDEN, BLACK CROWES als Inspiration zu nennen.




Euer kommendes Album heißt ganz schlicht „Scorpion Child“ – warum?


Aryn: Ja und nein. Es gab einen geheimen Konzepttitel „I Saw The End As It Passed right through me“. Es passt zu dem geordneten Konzept und Thema des Albums und zu dem Inhalt.
Chris: Ich denke, dass eines der besten Sache bei der Kunst und Musik ist, dass Leute ein Bild oder Stück für sich selbst interpretieren kann.



Im Moment kommen Bands, die von den 70ern und 80ern inspiriert sind von allen Teilen der Welt und sind sehr erfolgreich. Habt ihr versucht, aus dem Schatten dieser zu treten oder macht ihr einfach euer eigenes Ding?


Aryn: Ich bin nicht ganz im Bilde, was den individuellen Erfolg dieser Bands ausmacht, aber ja, es ist aufregend zu sehen, dass sie aus allen Ecken der Welt kommen. Es gab von unserer Seite keine Intention sich als Silhouette von ihrem Stil und Sound abzuheben. Was ich großartig finde ist, dass die Bands Sounds haben, die auf ihrer Umwelt basieren in verschiedensten Teilen der Welt und wie sie einander beeinflussen.



Nuclear Blast wird eine Gatefold-EP von eurem Album herausbringen. War es für euch wichtig eine Vinyl-Version zu haben? Ich bin mir sicher, dass es sich großartig auf Vinyl anhören wird.


Wir haben das Album komplett analog aufgenommen, mit dem Hintergedanken, dass es auf Vinyl erscheinen wird. Das war uns als Band sehr wichtig. Nuclear Blast hat mit dem Gatefold eine tolle Arbeit geleistet. Es gibt nichts vergleichbares, als ein neues Stück Wachs auszupacken und es beim Drehen zuzusehen, während man immer und immer wieder das Artwork begafft.





Favorisierst du gewisse Songs auf dem Album, oder gibt es Tracks, die du den Leuten empfehlen würdest, zuerst anzuhören?


Chris: Ich denke, dass „Salvation Slave“ ein wirklich kraftvoller Song ist. Da gibt es einen Part in der Mitte, der bei den Aufnahmen der Drums entstanden ist. Irgendetwas daran, wie ich das Solo gespielt habe, hat einfach den Moment eingefangen. Es war nicht perfekt, aber fühlte sich richtig an. Ich denke, dass diese kleinen Nuancen die Songs lebendig machen und uns so mit den Hörern verbindet.
Aryn: Mir gefällt auch „Kings Highway“ noch sehr gut



Wie ich vorher schon gesagt habe, es gibt eine Menge großartige neue „Retro“-Bands. Gibt es welche von denen du selbst Fan bist, oder bevorzugst du die Originale von den 70ern und 80ern?


Aryn: Es gibt so viele gute Sounds von dieser Ära und ich finde es toll, wenn man diese Bands hört, wie sie diesen nacheifern und ihre aktuellen Gefühle und Vibes dazu addieren.
Chris: Ich mag viele Sachen aus verschiedenen Dekaden. Wir werden bald mit KDAVAR aus Deutschland auf Tour gehen. Ich höre mir derzeit dauernd ihr Album an, genau wie das von GRAVEYARD. Außerdem gefallen mir ORCHID sehr gut, mit denen wir auch noch eine Tour im November starten.



Was kannst du mir über eure Lyrics erzählen?


Die Texte auf diesem Album handeln von den Belastungen des täglichen Lebens und den Erfahrungen, die wir machen. Leben, Liebe, Leiden.



Der Sound von SCORPION CHILD ist voller Power aber authentisch zu dem Sound der 70er Jahre. Wie lief der Aufnahmeprozess der Songs ab?


Chris: Wir nehmen zuerst die Drums und den Bass auf. Wir haben alles gemeinsam live gespielt, aber erst den Fokus auf Drums/Bass gelegt. Wir haben aber alles aufgenommen. Wie gesagt, sind dabei einige Gitarrenparts entstanden, die so auf die Platte kamen. Die restlichen Gitarren wurden mit ein paar alten Marshall Amps und Boogies overdubbed. Ich denke, dass die Aufnahmen auf Tape der Platte einen warmen und fetten Sound gegeben haben. Es klingt auf Vinyl einfach besser!
Aryn: Dankeschön! Der Prozess war eine Achterbahnfahrt, die 2 ½ Jahre gedauert hat. Wir sind so stolz, dass wir das Album endlich freisetzen können.



Die meisten Bands spielen zu anfangs Coversongs. War es bei SCORPION CHILD genauso? Wenn ja – welche Bands und Songs habt ihr gespielt?


Aryn: Wie haben einige Covers über die Jahre gespielt, auch wenn wir nie als Coverband gestartet sind! Haha! Coversongs helfen einer Band ihre Fertigkeiten zu verbessern und um den eigenen Sound zu finden.
Chris: Wir haben ein paar Covers wie LUCIFER´S FRIEND´s „Keep Goin“, welche auf unserer 7“ war. Aber auch RAINBOWs „Long Live Rock´N´Roll“ und „Stargazer“ haben wir schon gecovert.




Habt ihr schon Pläne für 2013?


Aryn: Oh ja! Wir haben das Rockstar Energy Mayem Festival eröffnet und im Oktober sind wir mit ORCHID in Europa.
Chris: Und im November geht es ja noch auf Tour mit KADAVAR.

Hi guys, SCORPION CHILD is one of the hottest Newcomers in these days, but many people know you yet. To change this, can you please introduce yourself and the band?


Chris: SCORPION CHILD is a 5-piece no bullshit rock n roll band! The band consist of lead vocalist Aryn Jonathan Black, Bassist/backup vox Shaun Avants, Drummer Shawn Paul Alvear, rhythm guitarist Tom Frank, and myself on Lead guitar Chris Cowart. We hail from Austin, TX.



How did you make it happen to be signed by one of the biggest Metal/Rock
Labels of the world Nuclear Blast?


Aryn: We performed just like we always have and Monte Conner had been watching us
for a hot minute and decided to contact our management. Our fandom was
mutual and he had a great deal of positive things to say so we inked a deal.
Chris: We knew we had a great record and knew we needed the right label behind us to put it out. We are all huge fans of the label and many of the bands on their roster. For us it’s a dream come true and an honour to be apart of the Nuclear Blast family.



Did you ever expect to get such a deal and how is it to work with them?


Aryn: As we all know, expectations can be a drag so we had only the expectations
we placed on ourselves going into the offer from NB. It is such a
tremendous label with so many great relationships. It has been a wonderful
family for a band like us to be a part of. They are awesome!
Chris: I guess Nuclear Blast came as a surprise to us but it feels like home. I think we have also gave the label a bit of a challenge too. Nuclear Blast has a strong track record with extreme and heavy music but not a lot of experience with more straight forward rock n roll bands. I feel very lucky to be part of a label that believes in what we do and listens to our opinions and concerns.



What was the idea of you bands name SCORPION CHILD?



Aryn: The sign of the Scorpio with it's ethic, drive and determination. Raw power.
Chris: We are all huge fans of THE CULT. “Scorpion Child” was a lyric from the song “Lil Devil” off of “Electric”.



What are your influences and idols?


Aryn: Actors, personalities, comedians, authors, philosophers, travelers and fellow
musicians.
Chris: As far as guitar goes Jim McCarty from Cactus. His style and attitude in which he played guitar is amazing. His riffs and leads had so much swagger but also were very musical. I’m also a huge Thin Lizzy fan. Scott Gorham/Brian Robertson era was probably my favourite. Although Gary Moore is also an amazing player. Paul Kossof of Free is another player who I think is very under rated. He wasn’t as flashy as some guys of his era but he made every fucking note he played count! More modern bands like the Melvin's, Fugazi, Soundgarden, Black Crowe’s have all influence me as a player.



Your upcoming record is simply called “Scorpion Child” – why?



Aryn: Yes and no. It has a hidden concept title "I saw the end as it passed right
through me" it relates to the cyclical concept and theme of the album and
it's content.
Chris: I think that is one of the coolest things about art and music is how people interpret a song or a painting!



At the moment bands who are inspired by the 70s and 80s are coming from
every corner in the world and are very successful. Did you try to
silhouette you against them, or do you just do your own thing?



I'm not fully aware of their individual success but yes it is exciting to
see them come from all corners of the earth. As far as a silhouette against
their style and sound,there is no intentions placed there. What's awesome
is how the bands have sounds based on their environments in Different parts
of the world and how they influence one another.



Nuclear Blast will release a Gatefold-EP of your album. Was it important to
you to have a vinyl version? I guess it sounds great on vinyl.



Chris: We used analog recording with the intension of putting the record out on vinyl. That was very important to us as a band. Nuclear Blast did an excellent job with the gatefold. There is nothing like opening up a new piece of wax and spinning it on the table while mulling the art work over and over!


Do you have favourite songs on this album or tracks you would recommend the
people to listen first to?


Chris: I think “Salvation Slave” is a real powerful song. There is a guitar part in the middle of the song that was done while tracking drums. There was something about the way I played the solo that captured a moment. It wasn’t perfect but it was right. I think those little nuances in songs are what makes them come to life and connect with people.
Aryn: Besides “Salvation Slave” i would name “Kings Highway” as a favourite



As i said before, there are many great new “retro”-bands out there. Are you
fans of some of them or do you prefer the originals from the 70s and 80s?


Aryn: There are so many great sounds from those eras and it is great to hear
bands emulating them yet adding their present day feel and vibe!
Chris: Yeah I like all kinds of music from all decades. We are actually going out with KADAVAR from Germany in a few weeks. I’ve been listing to their record recently as well as the new GRAVEYARD. ORCHID is another new band that I enjoy and we are going to Europe in November with those guys!



What can you tell me about the lyrics?


The lyrics on this album represent the trials of daily life, and the
Experiences we face. Life, love, regret.



The sound of “Scorpion Child” is powerful but authentic to the 70s sound.
How was the procedure of recording the songs?


Chris: We track all the drum and bass guitar first. We played everything but the drums and bass were the focus at first. We did all of that on tape. Like I said earlier, some of the guitar parts form that ended up on the final mix. The rest of the guitars we over dubbed with a bunch of different old marshalls and boogies. I think using tape gives the record a real warm, fat low end from the drums and bass. It also sound better on vinyl!
Aryn: Thank you for your kindness! The procedure was a roller coaster that lasted
about 2 1/2 years. We are proud to finally unleash it!



Most of the bands are starting with playing cover songs. Was this the same
in SCORPION CHILD? If so – which bands and songs did you play first?


Aryn: We have performed a gaggle of covers over the years,however we never
started as a cover band haha. Covers do help a band fine tune their skills
and find their sound in the beginnings.
Chris: We’ve done a couple covers like LUCIFER FRIEND´s ”Keep Goin” that was on our 7”. We also have done RAINBOW’s “Long Live Rock´N´Roll” and “Stargazer”.



Do you already have tour plans for 2013?


Aryn:Oh yes. We start the Rockstar energy Mayhem Festival then Europe
with ORCHID in October!
Chris: And in November we are goint to tour with KADAVAR.
