Vor ein paar Wochen, also noch keiner mit solchen Auswirkungen des Corona Virus auf unser tägliches Leben dachte, hatten wir die Gelegenheit, mit MARCO HIETALA, weithin bekannt als Basser bei NIGHTWISH, zu sprechen, und ihn über sein Soloalbum und allgemein über das Musikmachen zu sprechen. Leider sind die meisten Pläne, von denen er sprach, mittlerweile Covid-19 zum Opfer gefallen, aber das wusste zu dem Zeitpunkt noch niemand.



Hallo! Schön, die Möglichkeit zu haben, mit dir zu sprechen!
Ich habe dich schon mehrmals auf der Bühne gesehen!
Du wurdest berühmt mit NIGHTWISH! Wie war die Zeit mit dieser Band für dich?


Ich meine, ich bin schon eine ganze Weile dabei, es ist etwas Beständiges, das ich mag. Ich denke, es liegt an den Leuten. Natürlich hatten wir in der Vergangenheit Probleme, aber ich denke, dass wir jetzt eine freundschaftliche Konstellation anstelle von Problemen haben, deshalb ist es eine tolle Sache, mit ihnen zu arbeiten.




Neben NIGHTWISH hattest du immer auch andere Projekte wie RASKASTA JOULUA und TAROT! Wie hast du Zeit für diese Bands gefunden?


Das hing von den Buchungen ab. Wenn ich Zeit hatte, verbrachte ich die mit Leuten, die ich mag, weil ich gerne Musik und lyrische Sachen mache, und jetzt kam ja auch mein Soloalbum heraus.


Im Januar veröffentlichtest du ja dieses eben erwähnte Soloalbum mit dem Titel „Pyre Of The Black Heart“!
Wo hast du die Musiker für dieses Album gefunden?


Sie sind bereits bei RASKASTA JOULUA aktiv, und Tuomas Wäinölä ist auch lange Zeit der Gitarrist in dieser Gruppe, aber nicht von Anfang an, und auch Vili Ollila ist er schon lange dabei. Wir kennen uns also schon lange, und als die Jungs zu RASKASTA JOULUA kamen, wusste ich, dass die Jungs aufgeschlossen genug sind und Vollblut-Musiker, und eine unverbindliche Anfrage war genug, um mir zu helfen, das Album fertigzustellen, mir zu helfen, die Ideen und die Musik, die ich in meinem Kopf hatte, aufzubauen und damit die Songs zu vervollständigen.


Was ist die Geschichte hinter dem Album?


Bei „Pyre Of The Black Heart“ denke ich nicht, dass es sich um eine Geschichte handelt, es geht mehr um das Leben. Die Dame in dieser Storyline ist durch eine Trennung verunsichert, und fühlte sich sehr stark gedemütigt. Es geht um die Dunkelheit, das ist alles.


Einige der Tracks sind ein bisschen volkstümlich beeinflusst! Soll dies die Verbindung zu deinem Heimatland ausdrücken?


Ja, ich habe mich in jungen Jahren mit diesem volkstümlichen Zeug vertraut gemacht, auch von irischer und keltischer Seite her. Mein Vater hatte eine Albumsammlung mit irischen Volksliedern und englischen Folk-Sachen, und später kaufte auch ich diese Sachen, und ich dachte, das würde unsere Songs zusätzlich verschönern, und in einigen Teilen meines Albums würde es wirklich gut harmonieren. Und ich wollte etwas von dem finnischen Touch in die Melodielinie einbringen.


Es gibt ein Lied auf dem Album, das heißt „The Voice Of My Father"... Geht es um deine persönlichen Gefühle?


Ja, das ist es so ziemlich! Wir leben in einer ähnlichen Welt! Mein Vater hat mich und meinen Bruder in den Schlaf gesungen, als wir noch klein waren, und ich habe bei meinen Söhnen manchmal dasselbe getan.


Du verwendest verschiedene Stile - "Star, Sand And Shadow" bietet viele Synthesizer-Sounds! Magst du dieses Instrument?


Ja, besonders die Old-School-Sachen. Sie haben einen sehr eigenwilligen Sound, das muss einfach sein.




Es gibt auch einige nachdenkliche Balladen – erzählst du gerne Geschichten auf diese Weise?


Ich bin mir nicht sicher, ob ich diese langsameren Teile als Balladen definieren würde, das sind nur langsame, vielleicht doomische Parts. Vielleicht hast du recht, ich kann nicht sagen was es ist. Auf der anderen Seite haben wir viel von dieser Musik auf dem Album. Es gab eine Menge Ideen, die im Laufe der Jahre niedergeschrieben wurden, Lieder auf Finnisch, Lieder auf Englisch, und genau das kam heraus. Ich ging auf diesem Album mehr in die progressive Richtung. Es hat das Album in eine ganz bestimmte Linie eingebracht.


Ich denke, wenn die Musik nicht so laut ist, hören die Leute mehr auf die Texte.


Okay, vielleicht hast du recht. Aber wenn du denkst, das war beabsichtigt, dann muss ich dir sagen, dass das meiste davon zu Übungszwecken war! Wir haben so viel geschrieben.


Gibt es noch etwas, das du mir über das Album oder das Komponieren erzählen möchtest?


Im Laufe der Jahre gab es einige Ideen, aber die meisten davon entstanden aber in den letzten zwei bis drei Jahren.


Wird es eine Tour mit diesen Songs und dieser Band geben?


Oh ja, die wird es geben! Wir touren mit der Band! Wir machen im Februar eine mitteleuropäische Tour mit einigen deutschen Shows, in Amsterdam und an anderen Orten. Letztes Jahr habe ich viel zu viel mit NIGHTWISH und für mein Album gearbeitet, Fotoshootings gemacht und großartige Videos gemacht. Als ich zurückkam, habe ich einige RASKASTA JOULUA-Shows gemacht und jetzt habe ich Zeit für andere Dinge.


Ende dieses Jahres gibt es eine große NIGHTWISH-Tour und ihr kommt auch nach Wien, in die Stadthalle, die größte Location in Wien!


Das klingt gut!


Wie ist es, für ein so großes Publikum zu spielen? Normal oder etwas Besonderes?


Irgendwas dazwischen! Es hat sich im Laufe der Zeit geändert. Die Größe des Veranstaltungsortes spielt eigentlich keine Rolle mehr! Er kann klein sein, er kann wirklich groß sein, es kann alles sein. Ich denke, ich konzentriere mich nur auf eine Art kollektives Feeling. Wie man die Band so richtig auf die Menge überträgt, und den Ball in ihr Tor tritt. Wir alle machen das mit Leidenschaft, und es kommt nicht auf die Größe an. Aber es ist immer noch eine großartige Sache, erreichbar zu sein, und es ist großartig, dieses Leben zu leben und weiterzumachen, und ich bin wirklich dankbar dafür, dass das alles möglich ist.


Viele Bands haben ein Problem, einen Bassisten zu finden! Warum hast du dich für dieses Instrument entschieden und was macht es für dich so besonders?


Ich komme aus Tervo in der Nähe von Kuopio, einer sehr kleinen Stadt mit vielleicht 2000 Einwohnern, und als ich in der Schule war, war Vieles rar, auch die Bassisten, und ich und ein anderer Kumpel waren interessiert an Musik, also lernten wir zuerst Gitarre, danach Bass. Mein Bruder war auch Gitarrist, wechselte aber auch zum Bass.




Was sind deine Pläne für die Zukunft?


Ich mache eine kleine Solo-Tour und dann kommt das NIGHTWISH-Album heraus. Wir machen auch einige Südamerika-Shows, und ich werde sie mit meinen Jungs supporten, dann sind noch mehrere Festivals und die große Europa-Tour bis Ende des Jahres.


Und bitte noch ein paar letzte Worte an deine Fans?


Das Soloalbum ist jetzt da um gehört zu werden, und ich hoffe, die Leute sind aufgeschlossen und werden es sich anhören, also gebt ihm eine Chance! Danke!

I´ve seen you several times on stage!
You became famous with NIGHTWISH! How was the time with this band for you?


I mean, I´ve been there a quite of while, it´s something old that I like. I think, it´s the people. And of course we had troubles in the past, but I think, that now we have a kindable lineup instead of troubles, so it´s a good thing to work with them.


Beside NIGHTWISH you had always other projects like RASKASTA JOULUA and TAROT! Where did you find the time for this bands?


It depended on the bookings. When I had time to go to people that I like, because I like to do music and lyrical stuff, and now my solo-album was coming out too.


In January you released this solo-album named „Pyre Of The Black Heart“!
Where did you find the musicians for this album?


They are already active at RASKASTA JOULUA, and Tuomas Wäinölä is also the guitar player in this group for a long while, but not from the beginning, and also the same with Vili Ollila, he has been here long years as well. So we have known us a long time, and then, when the guys joined at RASKASTA JOULUA, I knew, that the guys are openminded and all the time musicians, and the uncompolding mention was enough, to help me to finish the album, to help me, to build the ideas and music I had in my head, to complete songs.


What is the story behind the album?


The „Pyre Of The Black Heart“, I don´t mind it´s a story, that much as life. The lady in line was insured by a divorce, and she felt so hard humbled. It´s some darkness, that´s it.


Some of the tracks are a little bit folk-influenced! Shall this express the connection to your home-country?


Yeah, I got familiar with this folkish stuff in a young age, and also from the Irish and Celtic side as well. My dad had an album collection with Irish folk songs and English folk stuff, and later on I bought that stuff again, and I thought, this would beautilize our stuff too, and in some parts of my album it would cooperate really good. And I wanted to pick up some of the Finnish flavour in the melody-line.


There is a song at the album named “The Voice Of My Father”! Is this about your personal feelings?


Yeah, it´s pretty much! We are living in a similar world! My dad sang me and my brother to sleep, when we were tiny, and I did the same to my sons sometimes.


You use different styles – “Star, Sand And Shadow” is with lots of synthesizer-sounds! Do you like this instrument?


Yes, especially the oldschool ones. They have always very personal sounds, that want to be heard.


There are also several thoughtful ballads – do you like to tell stories in this way?


This slower parts, I´m not sure, that I would define straightened as ballads, that are only slow, maybe doomish parts. Maybe you are right, I don´t know what it is. On the other side, we have lots of this music on the album. There were a punch of ideas, written down over the years, songs in Finnish, songs in English, and that is, what came out. I walked more to the progressive side on this album. Even it has very definite course in the album.


I think, if the music is not so loud, the people listen more to the lyrics.


Okay, you might be right. But if you think, we were intended, then I have to say, we were practising most of it, we wrote so much stuff.


Is there anything else, you want to tell me about the album, or about the composing?


There were some ideas over the years, but most of them were in the last two to three years.


Will there be a tour with these songs and this band?


Oh yes, there will be! We are touring with the band! We are doing a middle-european-thing in February, with some German-shows, in Amsterdam and different other places. Last year I worked much too much with and touring and rehearsals with NIGHTWISH and for my album, with photoshoots and great videos. When I came back, I did some RASKASTA JOULUA-Shows, and now I have time for other things.


At the end of this year there will be a big NIGHTWISH-Tour, and you will also come to Vienna, to the Stadthalle, the biggest location in Vienna!


That sounds good!


How is it to play for such a huge audience? Normal, or something special?


In between! It changed over the times. The size of the venue doesn´t really matter that much anymore! It can be small, it can be really big, it can be anything. I think, I just concentrate on a kind of a collective vibe. How get the band into the crowd, and kick that ball into their goal. We do all with passion, and it doesn’t depend on the size. But it´s still a great thing, to be reachable, and it´s great to live this life and keep on going, and I´m really thankful, it makes my life possible.


You are a bass-player! Lots of bands have a problem, to find a bass-player! Why did you decide to play this instrument, and what makes it so special for you?


I come from Tervo near Kuopio, a very small city with maybe 2000 inhabitants, and when I was in school, lots was rare, but bass-players was extremely rare, and I and another guy was interested in music, so we first learned guitar, later bass. My brother was also a guitar-player, but he also switched to bass.


What are your plans for the future?


I do a little bit solo-tour, and then the NIGHTWISH-album will come out. We are also doing some South-America-shows, and I will support them with my guys, and then several festivals, and the big Europe-tour till the end of the year.

The solo-album is now there to be heard, and I hope, the people are openminded, and would listen to, so give it a chance! Thank you!
