BEAST kamen aus dem Nichts und vollzogen dank ihrer EP "Maria Magdalena" und fetten Live-Shows einen Aufstieg in die Oberliga des Old-School Death Metal, den so wahrscheinlich keiner erwartet hat. Die Jungs aus Dänemark sind aber nach wie vor hungrig und haben schon große Pläne für die Zeit nach ihrem Debüt "Danse Macabre". Was die Truppe vor hat, erzählten uns die Gitarristen Svend und Lasse im gemütlichen Plausch.


Hey Jungs, wie sehr genießt ihr das Festival soweit?


Svend: Es ist großartig. Wir sind gestern angekommen, haben den Tag genossen, hatten ein paar Bier und ließen es uns gut gehn.




Was für Erwartungen habt ihr an eure erste Show am Summer Breeze?


Svend: Eigentlich ist es überhaupt unsere allererste Show in Deutschland. Aber ihr könnt euch auf jeden Fall ein paar Songs der neuen EP freuen, die funktionieren live wirklich großartig und natürlich auch einige Songs von unserem neuen Album.


Also ist es so eine Art Release-Party, das Album erscheint morgen...


Lasse: Genau! Man kann es aber auch heute schon am Merchstand kaufen. Also die limitierte grüne LP.

Svend: Wir fahren auch heute wieder nach Hause, also haben wir morgen einen ziemlich lahmen Release-Day. Und wir müssen nach Hause, da unser Manager am Sonntag heiratet (lacht).


Wie habt ihr es geschafft, so viele Festival-Shows und einen Plattenvertrag mit Century Media zu bekommen, bevor ihr überhaupt eine Platte veröffentlicht habt?


Lasse: Gute und engagierte Arbeit.

Svend: Eigentlich kann niemand in der Band richtig betrunken sein. Wir gehen immer früh ins Bett, also haben wir mehr Zeit, um an dem Material zu arbeiten und mehr Energie für die Live-Shows.





Ich habe euch schon beim Tuska Festival gesehen, ohne zu wissen, was mich erwartet. Es war eine großartige Show und es erinnerte mich an ein paar tolle Old-School-Death-Metal-Bands. Was sind eure Einflüsse?


Beide: BLOODBATH, OPETH, MORBID ENGEL ... natürlich. Old-School-Zeug.

Svend: Eigentlich ist das neue Material, an dem wir gerade arbeiten, wie altes OBITUARY-Zeug.

Lasse: Und auch die US-Death Metal-Band HORRENDOUS. Glam gemischt mit Death. Und wir mögen auch Sachen wie IRON MAIDEN.


Ihr seid also ziemlich schnell dabei, um eine zweite Platte herauszubringen?


Svend: Ja, wir werden versuchen, es rund eineinhalb Jahre nach diesem fertig zu haben.

Lasse: Aber nichts ist in Stein gemeißelt ... wir wollen Klassiker schreiben.


Euer Debüt heißt "Danse Macabre". Was war die Idee hinter dem Titel?


Lasse Es ist einfach der Todestanz. Es ist eine lange Geschichte. Unsere EP hieß "Maria Magdalena", wie eine Kirche in unserer Heimatstadt. Darin sind diese katholischen Kirchengemälde zu finden, die sieben Todsünden, die Svend auf seinem Rücken tätowiert hat.

Svend Bei der EP haben wir uns gerade eben mit diesen sieben Sünden befasst. Und auf dem Album findet man die Geschichte der Reise von der Geburt bis zum Tod. „Crosswhore“ handelt von einer Nonne, die sich Satan anbietet. „Hecatomb“ handelt von einer rituellen Verbrennung.
Lasse: Der Tod ist also das Konzept!




Wie kreiert ihr normalerweise die Songs? Ist es richtig old school zusammen im Keller?


Lasse: Ja, es ist eigentlich ziemlich alte Schule.

Svend: Wir waren damit beim Debüt sehr erfolgreich. Und für die nächste Platte wird es so sein, dass ich oder Lasse ein Riff bringen, und es uns gegenseitig zuwerfen und versuchen, etwas Neues daraus zu entwickeln. Das sind schon mal 2/3 der Arbeit. Der letzte Teil wird während einer Session mit der gesamten Band erstellt. Es ist also nie mein oder sein Song, es ist ein gemeinsames Projekt. Daher ist es großartig, jeden Song live zu spielen, da jeder ein persönliches Gefühl für den Song hat.


Also hat jeder irgendwie die gleichen Einflüsse oder habt ihr jemanden mit einem ganz anderen Geschmack?


Lasse: DREAM THEATER! (lacht)

Svend: Unser Schlagzeuger ist ein großer DREAM THEATER-Fan sowie RUSH- und Rap-Fan. Also macht er viel Gospelzeug am Schlagzeug. Und unser Sänger liebt IRON MAIDEN und MANOWAR, dieses Singalong-Zeug. Ich bin eher am US-Groove orientiert, wie PANTERA und Lasse die US-amerikanischen und schwedischen Death Metal-Bands.

Lasse: DEATH war mein größter Einfluss.


Was können Sie mir über das Artwork erzählen?


Svend: Es ist der Totentanz ... Man kann einen Wirbel von Seelen und den kleinen Schädelmann sehen, der einen Knochen hält. Er führt den Tanz in Richtung Himmel oder Hölle, wohin eben das Urteil geht. Genau darum geht es bei "Ego Te Absolvo".


Was war das für ein Bandfoto mit der Ziege? Wie kam es dazu?


Svend: Das ist eigentlich das erste Foto, das wir jemals zusammen gemacht haben. Wir gruben Ziegenschädel aus, um sie auf die Bühne zu legen. Das Bild wurde genau dort aufgenommen. Und die Ziege ist eigentlich die Mutter der drei Schädel, die wir auf der Bühne haben. Wir dachten nur, es sieht anders aus als alle anderen Bandfotos. Der Bauer, dem die Ziege gehört, ist ein guter Freund, daher war das kein Problem.

Lasse: Wir wussten, dass er Ziegen schlachtet und verkauft. Also baten wir ihn um ein paar Schädel, und er sagte: Ja, aber ihr müsst sie erst ausgraben.


Es scheint, dass alles sehr schnell ging bei euch. Ihr habt 2015 angefangen und jetzt bereits viele Festivals gespielt, EP und Record herausgebracht und auch einen Label Deal. Wie fühlt es sich an, diesen schnellen Erfolg zu haben?


Svend: Großartig und auch komisch. Summer Breeze ist jetzt unser erstes wirklich großes Festival. Wir mussten alles sehr schnell lernen. Wie man aufnimmt und alles, was damit einhergeht, auch um mit Festivals, Labels, Management usw. zu kommunizieren. Es war verrückt, aber ich denke, es war eine gute Möglichkeit, es zu lernen und an allem beteiligt zu sein.




Und wie hat die Band eigentlich zusammen gefunden? >

Lasse: Ich und Svend trafen uns in einer Bar. Ich trug ein Death Metal-T-Shirt, von DEATH. Wir kannten uns von seinem älteren Bruder, der mit mir befreundet war. Er fand das Shirt cool und ich wusste, dass er eine Band hat und ich fing auch gerade an, Gitarre zu spielen. Wir sprachen dann über den Versuch, gemeinsam etwas zu machen.

Hey guys, how do you enjoy the festival so far?


Svend: It´s great. We arrived yesterday, enjoyed the day, had a few beers and just had a good time.


What do you expect from your first show on the Summer Breeze festival?


Svend: Actually it´s also our very first show in Germany. But you can expect a couple of songs from the EP, because they work very well live and of course a bunch of songs from the new album.


So it´s a kind of release party, because the album will be out tomorrow...


Lasse: Yeah, exactly. People can actually get it today at the merch-booth. Also the limited green LP.

Svend:And we are going home tonight, so we have a lazy release-day tomorrow.
We have to be at home, because our manager is getting married on Saturday (laughs)


How did you manage to get so many festival-shows and a record deal with Century Media before you even had a record out?


Lasse: Good and dedicated work.

Svend: Actually no one in the band is really good in being drunk. We always go to bed early, so I think we have more time to work on the material and have energy for the live shows.


I already saw you at the Tuska Festival without knowing what to expect. It was a great show and reminded me on a few great Old-School Death Metal bands. So what are your influences?


Both: BLOODBATH, OPETH, MORBID ANGEL...of course. Old-School stuff.

Svend: Actually the new stuff we are currently working on, is like the Old OBITUARY stuff. >
Lasse: And also the US-Death Metal band HORRENDOUS, it´s like Glam mixed with Death. And we also like stuff like IRON MAIDEN.


So you are quite fast to get a second record out?


Svend: Yeah, we will try to have it finished around one and a half year after this one.

Lasse: But nothing is written in stone... we want to write those classics.


Your debut is called “Danse Macabre”. What was the idea of the title?


Lasse It´s just the dance of death. The Totentanz. It´s a bit of a long story. Our EP was called “Maria Magdalena”, which is a church in our hometown. It has this catholic church-paintings, that Svend has tattooed on his back about the deadly sins.

SvendAt the EP we just dealt with that sins. And the record is like the tale of the journey from birth to death. “Crosswhore” is about a nun which offers herself to Satan. “Hecatomb” is about a ritualistic burning.
Lasse:So death is the concept!


How do you normally create the songs. Is it old-school together in the basement?


Lasse: Yeah, it´s actually pretty old-school.

Svend: We were very successful with that on the debut. And for the next record it will be like me or Lasse will bring a third of a riff and we throw these at each other and try to develope something new from it. So we have two parts of a third. The last part will be created during a session with the whole band. So it´s never my or his song, it´s a joint project. So it´s great to play every song live, because everyone has a personal feel to the song.


So everyone has kind of the same influences or do you have someone with a completely different taste?


Lasse: DREAM THEATER! (laughs)
Svend: Our drummer is a big DREAM THEATER fan and also RUSH and Rap fan. So he does a lot of gospel stuff on the drums. And our singer loves IRON MAIDEN and MANOWAR, you know that singalong stuff. I´m more US-Grove oriented, like PANTERA and Lasse loves the US and swedish Death Metal bands.
LasseDEATH was my biggest influence.


What can you tell me about the artwork?


Svend: It´s the dance of death... or the Totentanz. You can see a vortex of souls and the small skullman holding a bone. He is leading the dance towards heaven or hell, where he get the judgement. That´s actually what “Ego Te Absolvo” is about.


What was the thing with you bandphoto with the goat? Where did you get it from?


SvendThat´s actually the first picture ever taken of us together. We went to dig out goat-skulls to bring it on stage. The picture was taken right there. And the goat is actually the mother of the three skulls we have on stage. We just thought it looked different from all the other bandphotos. The farmer who owns the goat is a good friend, so it was no problem to do that.
Lasse: We knew that he butchers and sells goat to eat. So we asked him to get some heads, and he said yeah, but we had to dig it up first.


It seems everything went really fast. You started in 2015 and now you played a lot of festivals, have EP and record out and also a label deal. So how does it feel to have this fast success?


SvendGreat and also weird. Summer Breeze is now our first really big festival. We had to learn everything very quick. How to record and all what comes with it, also to communicate with festivals, labels, management and so on. It was crazy, but I think it was a good way to learn it and to be involved in everything.


And how did the band actually find together?


Lasse: Me and Svend met at a bar. I was wearing a Death Metal t-shirt, actually from DEATH. We knew each other from his older brother, who was a friend of mine and he thought this shirt is cool and I knew that he has a band and I also started playing guitar at this time. So we talked about trying to play something together.
